Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following

Future Researchers. This research study can help future researchers in improving their
study concerning the bond strength test of concrete. Also, this research can widen the studies about
the bond strength in order to improve the concrete mix designing.
Civil Engineers & Architects. The results of this study will be significant for further
improvements and innovations of structural designs. It can also help the engineers to further study
the bond strength of composite concrete.
College Institution. Different Universities and Institutions can utilize this study with the
use of Universal Testing Machine. More accurate results in terms of the true strength of concrete
will be obtained. This will be an additional help for the students as well as to the faculty of the
institution.
.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
This study will focus on gathering about the bond strength of composite concrete with or
without adhesive material (epoxy). There are four methods to be performed, the Slant Shear Test
Method by ASTM and the Slant Shear Test Method using the Bond Strength Apparatus and the
Splitting Test Method by ASTM and Direct Tension Test using the Bond Strength Apparatus.

The design mixes will have (3) water-cement ratios, each have three (3) nominal sizes of three-
fourth inches (3/4”) of coarse aggregates. The sample specimen will follow ASTM standard,
specifically, ASTM C882 / C882M, ASTM C496. There will be 3 replicates that will be subjected
to the four methods. A total of 216 specimens for the four tests, 27 specimen for Slant Shear Test
Method by ASTM, 27 specimen designed for the Slant Shear Test Method using the Bond Strength
Apparatus, 27 specimen for Splitting Test Method by ASTM and 27 specimen designed for the
Direct Tension Test using the Bond Strength Apparatus.

The apparatus to be used in making the Modified Bond Strength Apparatus is made of stainless
steel with a dimension of 182mm x 100mm x 80mm (width, height, thickness) and the claw is
43mm with an inclination of 45 degrees. There is a 10mm diameter stainless steel round bar which
will serve as the main reinforcement in the clamp part of the device that is easy to set and detach.
The threaded round bar is placed at both sides of the device and serves as alignment corrector that
will push the specimen by turning the device clockwise. The level tube will measure the alignment
of the MBSA. The level tube attached to the upper portion of the device will serve as the corrector
with corresponding measurement of eccentricity.

The results gathered by MBSA will be compared to indirect method. The standard test
method for steel will be the basis for the reliability and the effectiveness of MBSA. Furthermore,
to validate the mathematical formula, the concept of Coulomb-Mohr’s theory will be used.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
These are the terms to be encounter and frequently used to understand the process of this
research paper.
Conceptual Definition:

Bond Strength – resistance to separation of composite concrete

Concrete – is a mixture of water, aggregates and other materials that hardens over time.

Curing Period- Curing Period- keeping the hydration process of cement with water until
concrete attains the maximum compressive strength (Prusty, 2016).

Direct Tensile Test - Direct tension test should yield a tensile strength closer to the true
strength of the concrete under pure uniaxial tension; and there is no official standard released by
accredited agencies for the direct tensile test.

Modified - It is use in the study as a partial change to improve the direct tensile test that will
acquire on the UTM to be used in this study.

Slant Shear Test - This method follows the ASTM C882/C882M

Split Cylinder Test - This method follows the ASTM 496/496M.

Tensile Strength – Ultimate strength of a material under tensile stress

Universal Testing Machine - The machine to be used in conducting the test for tensile strength
and compressive strength of materials.

Operational Definition:

Tensile Strength - It is the resistance of a material to break under tension. Tensile strength will
be determined by Direct Test methods with the use of Universal Testing Machine (UTM).

Concrete Design Mix - It is the process of finding the proportions of concrete mix in terms of
ratios of cement, sand and coarse aggregates. (The Constructor, 2015) Concrete mix design
proportions are either by volume or by mass. The water-cement ratio is usually expressed in
mass.
