Egg Osmosis
Hypothesis
If a egg is left is a non isotonic solution, then the egg will react by absorbing on releasing water
through its membrane.
Process
On day one the egg was placed into 200 mL of vinegar.Since vinegar is a acid the egg began
to fizz and the shell began deteriorate over the days.On day four the egg had increased in mass
by 35.1 grams and the egg increased by 6.4% addition to the volume of the vinegar which
decreased by 25 mL.Egg mass was increased due to osmosis. The water molecules moved
across the semipermeable membrane so the water concentration would be equal.Since the
solution is hypotonic the water conservation is higher in the vinegar so to even it out the water
molecules go into the egg. Then the egg was placed into 200 mL of corn syrup and left
overnight.
On day five the egg’s size was decreased by 41% due to the hypertonic solution the water
molecules from the egg throw the permeable membrane (osmosis) into the corn syrup so the
concentration would be equal. You can see the separation between corn syrup and water with
show that the volume increased by 25 mL.Then the egg was placed into 200 mL of distilled water
overnight.
On day six the egg size increased by 58% and the remaining volume was 150 mL which is a
decrease of 50 mL.The mass was 99.3 grams and it was increased because of osmosis and the
hypotonic solution. The egg has a semipermeable membrane that allows for the necessary
particles to go into the cell. This is ways osmosis is possible.
Conclusion
1. When the egg was placed in vinegar the water molecules moved into the egg across the
phospholipid bilayer to make the water concentration even which is called osmosis. The
vinegar had more water concentration is higher which mean that it is hypotonic.
2. When the egg was placed into the corn syrup the egg was placed into a hypertonic
solution in which the water molecules move out of the cell through the membrane.
3. The amount of corn syrup increased due to all of the water that was released to even out
the concentration. When you look at a picture the corn syrup is at the bottom at 200 mL
still but the water is on top.
4. After the egg was removed from the corn syrup and placed in water overnight it
expanded. This happened because the egg was almost all drained water so the distilled
water naturally had more water molecules so in moved into the egg, from high
concentration to low.
5. My hypothesis for this lab was correct because whenever the egg was placed into a
solution the mass of the egg changed as well as the volume of the liquid.d
