An official educator license is provided only when an educator qualifies for their first South Carolina license. All subsequent changes, additions or modifications to a license may be confirmed by the educator via our "View Licensure Status" link under the Educator Licensure section of our website: http://ed.sc.gov.
Initial License: The educator holds an earned undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited educator preparation program. One or more additional requirements must be met to advance to the Professional license.
Professional License: The educator has met all requirements for renewable licensure in accordance with State Board of Education regulations. The license is valid for a five-year period.
Limited Professional: The purpose of the Limited Professional license is to provide a licensure advancement option for educators who hold South Carolina Initial licenses and who are employed as educators in eligible, non-regulated educational entities in South Carolina.
National Board Certification: The educator holds a National Board Certificate in the area(s) indicated. South Carolina license validity periods closely parallels the National Board Certification ten-year validity period for educators holding both credentials.
Alternative Route: The educator is participating in South Carolina's Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE).
Alternate Route(ABCTE): The educator is participating in alternate route licensure based on the American Board for the Certification of Teacher Excellence license.
Teach for America: Teach for America is a national program designed to recruit a diverse group of high-achieving recent college graduates to teach for two years in high-need, low-income communities.
Adjunct License: The Adjunct Teaching license has been approved by the State Board of Education and State Legislature as a means for giving content experts the opportunity to share their expertise in the classroom on a limited basis to fulfill a specific local staffing need.
Restricted Alternative Licensure: A licensure area is issued in core content academic areas at the request of the employing school district and is valid for the academic year in which it is requested. The educator has a valid South Carolina teaching license and a minimum of twelve semester hours of credit in the area for which the license is requested. The educator must have demonstrated content competency in the field of the restricted alternative licensure.
Out-of-Field Permit: A permit is issued in non-core content academic areas at the request of the employing school district and is valid for the academic year in which it is requested. The educator has a valid South Carolina teaching license and a minimum of twelve semester hours of credit in the area for which the permit is requested.
Endorsement: The educator has completed specialized training in the identified area.
Career and Technology Education Work-Based (CID's 90xxxx): The level/class of the license reflects a combination of education and work experience related to the area of licensure according to Regulation 43-63.
International: A license issued to visiting teachers from other countries who are teaching in South Carolina.
Internship: A license for educators who are enrolled in a State Board of Education approved program and have met all degree and licensure requirements with the exception of the internship. The educator is employed as the teacher of record, school psychologist or speech-language therapist.
License Renewal: License renewal coordinated by local school districts for South Carolina public school educators. All other South Carolina licensed educators should contact our office or visit the licensure web site for information concerning renewal requirements at http://ed.sc.gov.
Experience Credit: Experience credit for the current school year is not officially recorded in the educator's file until after September 1 of each year, and will not be included on the total years of credit displayed on this license. Partial years of experience do not appear on the educator license.
Educator Requests: A Request for Change/Action form must accompany all requests for evaluations, worksheets, official license copies, change of name or address, renewal, etc. A downloadable form is located at http://ed.sc.gov. Please include a $10.00 check or money order for each official license copy requested.
Standards of Conduct: Educators must adhere to the Standards of Conduct for South Carolina Educators which can be found at http://ed.sc.gov.
Disclosures: The State Board of Education licensure requirements are subject to change and, therefore, could affect your ability to qualify for renewals, endorsements, add-ons and other services. For this reason, it is essential for you to maintain your qualifications to teach in South Carolina and to be familiar with the rules and regulations that are in effect at the time future requests are made.
