1. Scope

This procedure covers the painting requirements for external surface of carbon steel
parts of Pressure Vessel, Piping, tank, etc for
........................................................................................... project.

2. Code & Standard

The applicable standards shall be in accordance with purchaser’s specification and


manufacturer’s requirements.

3. Execution of Works

3.1 Shop Painting


3.1.1 The equipments shall be painted in accordance with painting
scheduleattached at the manufacturer’s shop and site.
3.1.2 Surfaces of equipment’s to be insulated shall be performed with primer
coats of anti corrosive painting.
3.1.3 Prior to fabrication or installation, primer coat shall be applied to the
parts which are not accesible after fabrication or installation.
3.1.4 All flange faces and other foreign matter shall be kept free of paint
except rust preventive.
3.2 Surface Prepration
3.2.1 Mill scale, rust – scale and foreign matter shall be removed by sand blast
cleaning or tool cleaning
3.2.2 The grade of preparation shall be classified and defined as follows :
SP – 2 Hand tool Cleaning
SP – 3 Power tool Cleaning
SP – 5 White Metal Cleaning
SP – 6 Commercial Blast Cleaning
SP – 10 Near White Blast Cleaning
3.3 General Requirements
3.3.1 Painting shall be applied to the spraying method except special case such
as repair and touch up.
3.3.2 Prior to application, paints shall be well agitated to give uniform mixing.
3.3.3 In mixing many paints, it is necessary to mix them according to the exact
mixing ratio in accordance with manufacturer’s standards. The mixed
paints shall be used for painting within the regulated pot life.
3.3.4 Where thinner is used for thinning the paints, volume shall be limited to
the extend specified by paint manufacturer’s standards.
3.3.5 Painting work shall be done under the condition which are not
appropriate for applying paint.
3.3.6 The primer coat of paint shall be applied imediately after completion of
surface preparation.
3.3.7 Subsequent coating of paint shall be made after checking against the
dryness of previous paint films.
3.3.8 When the surface to be painted is wet or damp but unavoidably require
the painting, painting shall be done after full wiping-away and completed
drying of surface.
3.3.9 Painting shal be carefully done in such a way to give a coating free from
lifting, or loose of adhesion, discoloration, and finished to uniform paint
film thikness.
3.3.10 Painting shall be carefully done at all edges, corners, crevice, weld and
other complex shapes.
3.3.11 In the following case, repair painting shall be done :
a) When thre are development of any detrimental film irregularity, such
as loose, cracked, brittle non-adherent paint, or discoloration during 2
or 3 days after completion of painting.
b) When there are development of any detrimental film irregularity,
such as lifting or loose of adhesion of the coat due to change of
weather before dried.
c) Other unacceptable cases.
3.4 Environmental Condition
3.4.1 No painting operation shall be done in the following weather conditions
on the work area :
a) Rain, snow, fog or mist weather is expected to become adverse
before the paint has been dried.
b) Dust effects adverse before the paint has been dried.
c) Ambient temperature in below 5°C.
d) Realtive humidity is 85% or more.
e) Steel surfaec temperature is less than 3°C.

4. Inspection

4.1 After completion of finished coat, thickness or dry film shall be checked by
thickness gauge.
4.2 After completion of finished coat, appearance of painting be visually checked.
4.3 The acceptance criteria of dry film thickness as follow :
4.3.1 Number of measurements and minimum thickness.
4.3.2 The average of five spot measurements for each such 10 square meters
are shall not be less than specified thickness. No single spot
measurement in any 10 square meters area shall be less than 80% of the
specified thickness the five spot measurements shall be made for each 10
square meters of area as follow :
a) For structure not exceeding 28 square meters in area, each 10 square
meters area shall be measured.
b) For structures not exceeding 93 square meters in area, three of 10
square meters area shall be randomly selected and measured.
c) For structures exceeding 93 square meters, the first 93 square meters
shall be measured as stated in section (b) and for each additional 93
square meters of area or increment there of, one of 10 square meters
area shall be randomly selected and measured.
