Not just another after-school or weekend program, PACTS is
a youth leadership experience designed to involve students
The Franklin Institute as an integral and active part of the daily life of The Franklin
222 N. 20th Street Institute. Students who continue in PACTS through high school
Philadelphia, PA 19103-1194 graduation have the skills and confidence to be successful
college students and become dynamic, productive adults with
engaging careers in science and beyond.
Program Information
The PACTS Program is a FREE program, available to
Philadelphia area students in grades 5 through 10. The
PACTS workshops meet on Saturday mornings, twice a
month during the school year at The Franklin Institute.
After completing the attached application, all students
are required to attend an orientation before participating
in the program. There are no specific grade requirements,
but students are encouraged to be strong in math and
science, and have a passion for learning science! To sign
up, please complete the attached application and mail it
to the museum or fax it to PACTS at 215.448.1219. Once
received, a Franklin Institute Youth Programs staff member
will be in touch with you shortly.

Science in the City
Do you ever
wonder
about our
environment?

PEERS
Do you ever wonder how the environment affects people
and how people affect it? Are there solutions to the
major problems of pollution and climate change that
will allow us to maintain the diverse ecosystems that
make our planet the beautiful wonder that it is? What
do you think YOU can do about it? Join the PACTS
Environmental Education Research and Service (PEERS)
program and you will be able to explore all the avenues
involved in conserving our resources and ensuring planet
Earth continues to be a marvelous place to live.
Through PEERS, students are encouraged to search
for answers to the environmental questions that are
most frequently asked by society. Workshops, field trips
research and hands-on experimentation will aid the
students in making informed decisions regarding our
environment and how it affects them every day.
We all experience the city in our own unique way.
That experience changes depending on where you are,
who you are, where you come from and what you do.
Someone who comes from a small town will marvel at
Philadelphia’s City Hall, while some life-long residents
think City Hall is ugly. Still others see a magnificent
structure, the world’s largest building fabricated only
of concrete.
Who engineered the Comcast Center? What keeps
the power flowing to our homes? Who will design the
next great building in our city? Science in the City
students will be asked to explore the city though the
technologies of the modern architect to not only discover
unique individual structures, but how they affect the
neighborhoods they reside in, and the city around them.
Architects from the architectural firm DPK&A will once
again join Franklin Institute staff to lead students on a
quest through research, drawings, photography, exclusive
lectures, special trips and exciting events in order to
discover the “Science in the City!”

Robotics
Are you curious about how the robot knows what to
do? Interested in giving your ideas on how to better our
world? The PACTS Robotics Workshop invites you to
explore these concepts and more. Learn how to support
our communities through the science of technology.
Our robot student members are encouraged to develop
many skills that prepare them for leadership and
college, such as teamwork, scientific research, building
and programming robots, and developing and giving
presentations.
We have three teams: Area 51, EnerGee and The Teen
Titans; each group builds and programs robots of
diverse levels. Area 51 is a group of young students
who have a variety of robot building skills; they perform
yearly in the FLL LEGO competitions. EnerGee, our
newest team, is an all girls team of dedicated LEGO
robot builders who also focus on building alternative
energy robots. The Teen Titans is a group of teenagers
who build a variety of more advanced robots and
compete in various robot competitions.
