Refractive Index and Refractive Dispersion of HydrocarbonLiquids -

Abbe Refractometers ASTM D 1218

ASTM D 1218, ASTM D 1747, ASTM D 2159 (obs.), ISO 5661, DIN 51423-2, JIS C2101

Product group(s): Fuel

User group(s): Fuel, Gas Oil, Jet Fuel

Scope: This test method covers the measurement of refractive indexes, accurate to six units in the fifth decimal place,
and refractive dispersions, accurate to twelve units in the fifth decimal place, of transparent and light-colored
hydrocarbon liquids that have refractive indexes in the range from 1.33 to 1.50, and at temperatures from
+20 to +30 °C.

The test method is not applicable within the accuracy stated to liquids having colors darker than No. 4 ASTM
Color as determined by Test Method D 1500, to liquids having bubble points so near the test temperature that
a reading cannot be obtained before substantial weathering takes place, to liquids having a refractive index
above 1.50, or to measurements made at temperatures above +30 °C.

Refractometry has been a well-proven method to determine The typical accuracy for Abbe-type refractometers is in the third

Refractometric measurements are temperature dependent and

Temperature corrections depend on the material under test and are
only known for a very few cases e.g. sugar solutions. It is therefore
necessary to make the measurements at 20 °C or another specified

Main Unit
13-0285 High Precision Modified Abbe Refractometer
ASTM D 1218 - ASTM D 1747 - DIN 51 423-2 -
ISO 5661 - JIS C2101 (ASTM D 2159)

Modified Abbe-type refractometer for refractive index measurements nD = 1.3 to 1.74 with evenly
divided scale and micrometer screw.

The refractive index is found by use of a conversion table. Average accuracy throughout the range is
0.00004.

Consisting of:
1 conversion table for refractive indexes related to sodium-D light (589.6 nm). Prisms with hose
nozzles for a thermostatic circulator, built-in temperature probe and digital temperature display, scale
illumination by LED, prism illumination by spectral light.

Supplied with:
1 scale lamp outfit and 1 sodium spectral lamp, traceable test plate (certificate, however, subject to
particular order), bottle of contact liquid (monobromonaphthalene) and software for conversion of the
scale readings to refractive index or Brix.

Power supply: 230 V, 50/60 Hz
