Scholastic Book Orders:
Our class is LOVING reading time. They are all super interested in finding new
genres and books to get hooked on! A wonderful way to support your child’s
love for reading is to buy MORE BOOKS! Scholastic website has so many
amazing books and they are such great prices!! Here is the link to browse books
and order online: https://clubs.scholastic.com/
Our class code for online orders is RHD8M. All book orders are sent to our school
and then sent home with your child.

Current Learning:

Fundations: We will continue Unit 10 (2 weeks). Students will read and spell words
with ai an ay, using spelling option procedure to spell words with a /a/ sound.
Students will also be introduced to the concept of homophones using definitions
to support the correct spelling based on its meaning. For example: (main,
mane).

The trick words for this unit are:

Week 1: great, country, away
Week 2: America, school, thought
 PLEASE make sure you are practicing these words and patterns with your
child every night. This will support them when they READ and WRITE!! It’s
SO important!

Math: Unit 6- Geometry: Our class is already loving this geometry unit!! This week,
students will be sorting triangles and quadrilaterals based on attributes (sides,
angles, vertices) and will explore Area using pattern blocks and geo-boards.
Many students were interested in using geo-boards at home. I introduced a
resource to them and you can easily download it to a tablet or phone!

We will begin a new Number Corner for the month of March. The focus will be
on subtraction with the use of setting up savings and checking accounts and
making withdrawals. We will continue the addition quick facts for fluency and
accuracy of addition strategies, and we will make observations about various 2-
D and 3-D shapes.
For extra support at home, I would suggest having your child practice math fact
fluency on XtraMath  https://xtramath.org/#/home/index

Writing: We will begin our Informative writing. Students will go through the
process of the Scientific Method. They will pose questions, research, form a
hypothesis, test experiments that focus on force and motion, and analyze their
results. I love this unit! It has a strong focus on inquiry and science!

Reading: Last week, we looked closely at informational/fictional texts. Students

worked in groups to identify the craft and structure of informational texts.
Students used text features to locate key facts and information in a text
efficiently. In small groups, students studied the importance of how text features
support the readers understanding of a topic. Each group presented the text-
feature they studied and learned new facts about various science and social
studies topics.
This week, our focus will be on identifying the main topic of a multi-
paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text (key
ideas and details).

I will continue to BAS students to identify their instructional reading level this
week. This is an assessment used to identify self-correction rates, accuracy, and
comprehension on leveled texts. Once I have assessed all students, I will create
new Guided Reading groups and continue supporting decoding and
comprehensions skills.

Social Studies (Economics): (Junior Achievement) Last week, students learned

about the flow of money in a community's economy. They played a money
matching game and sang a song about money within a community. Our Junior
Achievement volunteers presented each student with a graduation certificate!
Thank you again to our parent volunteer Zach Barber!

Have a GREAT week!
