HW # 2
Due Date: Sunday, March 12, 2017 Total No. of Problems: 3

Problem 1:
For the Geneva mechanism given below, the peg (or pin) at P is fixed to link 2 and slides
in the slot of link 3. For the position shown below, 2 = 150o, R1 = O3O2 = 8 cm and R2 =
O2P = 6 cm. The angular velocity of link 2 is given as 2 = 30 rad/s CCW. Use the
complex number method to find the following:

(a) magnitude and direction of angular velocity of link 3 (3), and

(b) sliding velocity of peg P in the slot of link 3 ( R 3 ). Is the peg P sliding downward or
upward in the slot of link 3 at this instant?

Problem 2:
For the mechanism below, link 2 rotates with an angular velocity of 2 = 200 rad/s (cw)
and angular acceleration α2 = 1500 rad/s2 (ccw), as shown. Given that P0P = 1.5 inch.
Also given are the following velocities:

velocity of link 4 (VP4) = 212 inch/sec

velocity of point P2 (VP2) = 300 inch/sec  to link 2
relative sliding velocity of slider 3 on link 4 VP2P4 = 212 inch/sec .

(a) Draw a vector representation (make point P0 the origin of your reference
coordinate system) and write the corresponding loop closure equation.

(b) Obtain the acceleration equation by taking the second time derivative of this loop
closure equation and then put it into the complex number form for the

acceleration analysis. Note: r = ( r - r2+ j2 r  + jr) ej

(c) Using the complex number equation found above, find the acceleration of link 4
(aP4) and relative sliding acceleration of slider 3 with respect to link 4 at P (aP2P4).
Do not forget to indicate directions for both aP4 and aP2P4.
