ASSIGNMENT 4

1. Why is suicide so common in our society?

It appears that, for many possible reasons, there is more social anxiety and
depression these days, especially in this internet-driven age, which in turn increases
suicide rates. Our entire society is issuing a cry for help. The specific reasons why people
commit suicide are many and varied; ‘mental health issues’ is the term often cited as the
cause. Mental health problems are difficult to study because we have no definitive tests
for them. Hence, the cause for the increasing rate of suicide is still vague. What is only
clear is that suicide is a major social issue.

2. Does a person have the right to terminate his own life?

A right to life, undesirably, includes the right to end life. Personal liberty should
not be subject to laws, it is a sacred right. We have control over so many things in this
world. I think, how and when to live is one of them. However, we all have a purpose
here. This is called the meaning of life. Terminating our life will be the easy way out but
is not the best choice. We all think it is our choice but it is not up to us to just throw it
away just because we struggle from the trials and tribulations that are being handed to us.

3. What about euthanasia, mercy-killing and assisted suicide: may we help another person
end his life?

Euthanasia and assisted suicide are often with terminally ill people. They should
have the right to end their suffering with a quick, dignified, and compassionate death.
The patients or their families at least have the right to control the circumstances of death,
Often these patients desire to die at home or with the presence of everyone they love
since the date of their date is already definite. Those who resort to these methods are the
people that are actually ready to die and had already accepted their imminent death.

4. Should this be legalized or treated as murder?

It should not be treated as murder. Suffering at the end of life is sometimes

unavoidable and unbearable, and helping people end their misery may be necessary. One
good consequence of legalizing euthanasia is that once death has been accepted, it is often
more humane to end life quickly and peacefully, when that is what the patient wants. Such a
death will often be seen as better than a more prolonged one which only lengthens their
agony and suffering.
