Replacement of inefficient conventional lighting by LED(light emitting diode) systems that result in increased environment performance by lessening emissions and is tremendously energy efficient over time . Energy efficiency will lead to environmental and overall economic efficiency for SAIL. 2. Reduction in electricity consumption Demand for electricity can be brought down by using modern state of the art green equipment and turning the light off in idled sections. Boilers can be upgraded to use by-products as fuel for producing steam to generate electricity. 3. Reduction in NOx emissions Sail must be committed to reduce NOx emissions by investing in technology to push steel manufacturing as environmentally efficient as possible. Burner designs can be experimented upon to create innovative burners with lesser emissions. 4. Responsible supply chain Though SAIL has a comprehensive procurement policy in place, it still needs to ensure by due diligence that all its supply chain partners subscribe to the latest environmental management standards . 5. Subscription to additional global environmental standards. SAIL being a party to the UN global compact since 2007 should also voluntarily subscribe to memberships of other environmental standards where compliance to the norms is mandatory. 6. Enhanced involvement SAIL is doing commendable work in creating value for millions of underprivileged Indians and should continue to invest more in enabling access to education, healthcare, basic necessities and being a public sector undertaking, It is bound by the moral obligation of leading the way in CSR activities . 7. Sports CSR This is one area SAIL needs to invest more in. Although somehow active in sports CSR, SAIL can create more value by promoting sports at the grassroots level. As a part of its CSR activities in the education sector SAIL can open a sports school where underprivileged children are educated and also trained by mandating sports in their daily regime. 8. Culture SAIL can also invest in reviving and reenergising handicraft units to promote Indian cultural items. Supplying them with market information , redesign and rebrand products to cater to contemporary market demands , providing them financial support and training to hone their skills can lead to revival of dead handicraft units and bring light and sustainable development to a lot of families.
