Word Formation

**Important things.

 Look at the word you have to change. Which words do you know that are in the same word family?
 The beginning of the word is often the same and the end of the word changes.
 What form is the new word? A verb? A noun? An adjective? An adverb?
 Nouns often end: -ment, -ion, -ness, -ity.
 People nouns often end: -er, -or, -ist, -ian.
 Adjectives often end: -able, -ible, -ive, -al, -ic, -ed, -ing.
 Some verbs end: -ise, -ate, -en.
 Adverbs often end: -ly.
 Is the new word negative? If so, you may need a prefix, e.g. un- (unhappy), im- (impolite), in-
(inexperienced), dis- (dishonest), etc

2.Competition (Noun)

- I won the car in competition (Pron+v+definite article+n+pre+n)

3. Competitive (Adjective)

- A very competitive person(adv+adjective+n)

4. Competitively (Adverb)

- Competitively priced goods

5. Produce (Verb)

- Organically produced food

6. Producer (Noun)

- Indonesian milk producers

7. Productive (Adjective)

- My time spend in the libary was very productive

8. Productively (Adverb)

- It’s important to spend your time productively

9. Describe (Verb)

- Their daily lives are desribed in detail

10. Description (Noun)


- She gave us description of their attitude

11. Descriptive (Adjective)

- She read out some of the descriptive passages in novel

12. Compose (Verb)

- She composed a letter of protest

13. Composite (Adjective)

- The document was a composite of information from various sources

14.Compotition (Noun)

- In the exam you will have to do a composition

15. Comprehend (Verb)

- She failed to comprehend the seriousness of the situation

16. comprehensible (Adjective)

- The public needs information in a comprehensible form

17. comprehension (Noun)

-There are exercises for checking comprehension.

18. comprehensively (Adverb)

- The matter has been comprehensively discussed.

19. Conclude (Verb)

- She concluded her speech with a quotation from Shakespeare.

20. Conclusion (Noun)

- If we took this argument to its logical conclusion

21. Hour (Noun)

- He'll be back in an hour

21. Hourly (Adjective)

- an hourly bus service

22. Hourly (Adverb)

- Reapply sunscreen hourly and after swimming
