13.12 Adverbs in Sentences

Task Procedures:

1. Get pupils to play ‘Simon Says’ in phrases using adverbs of manner.


i. “Simon says, write neatly.”
ii. “Simon says, eat hungrily.”
iii. “Simon says, walk happily.”
iv. “Simon says, run fast.”
v. “Simon says, cut carefully.”
Classroom Management: When pupils get too noisy, clap 3 times and gesture ‘silent’
sign. Pupils need to follow suit (clap 3 times and make ‘silent’ sign).

2. Show pupils picture flashcards to pupils and stick strips onto whiteboard.
i. “Look at this picture. Do you remember the phrase for this picture?” (show picture
flashcards)

3. Repeat for all picture flashcards.

4. Show pupils sentence strips. Stick strips onto the whiteboard. Ask pupils to read
i. “Please read.” (pointing word-by-word for pupils to read)

5. Ask a pupil to match sentence strips to the correct picture flashcards. All pupils read
sentences aloud.
i. “Match the sentence to a picture.” (gesture a sentence strip to either of the
picture flashcards)
ii. “Let’s read together.” (pointing word-by-word for pupils to read together)

6. Repeat step 5 for all sentence strips.

7. Ask pupils to underline adverbs of manner found in the sentences.


i. “Find the adverb. Underline the adverb” (Gesture - underline)
8. Distribute worksheet to all pupils.

9. Read instructions with pupils and explain instructions to pupils.

i. “Let’s read the instructions together”. (Gesture to read instructions from the
worksheet)
ii. “Write the correct sentences according to the pictures.” (Gesture the tasks on the
whiteboard).

Managing errors and mistakes:

a. In the game ‘Simon Says’ pupils are given 3 chances when mistake is made. Pupils
must be removed from the game after making the third mistake.
b. If pupils read the sentence incorrectly/poor pronunciation, correct them and ask
them to repeat before getting the rest to follow.

Reward and Feedback

a. Praise pupils when they answer correctly, i.e. “Good job!”, “Very good!”, “Well done!”
b. Get pupils to applause when a classmate completes the task correctly.
c. Pupils will be awarded a sticker if they manage to complete worksheet correctly.
