Swap smoky stove, get good rebate
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB)
wants residents to change out old, smoky wood stoves
for cleaner appliances including heat pumps, gas or pellet
stoves or cleaner burning wood stoves.
The RDKB has put a total of $6,000 toward the 2018
Wood Stove Exchange Program and $5,000 is still avail-
able to fund rebates to local residents. Qualifying residents
could receive $250 toward a new EPA/CSA approved
wood burning appliance or $400 toward a new pellet, pro-
pane, or liquefied petroleum stove or electric heat pump.
Replacing wood heat can also lower home insurance
rates. Residents can contact their insurers to find out if
they qualify for lower rates. Any resident of the RDKB who
wants information about how to enroll in the program
can contact Wood Stove Exchange Program Coordinator,
John Vere at woodstove@telus.net or 1-866-992-9663.
The RDKB is helping to promote the 2018 Wood Stove
Exchange Program throughout the region, in partnership
with the BC Ministry of Environment and the BC Lung
Association.

Kaslo Sourdough, a family owned
bakery that uses ancient sourdough
fermentation technology to cre-
ate pasta, is one of 11 organizations
receiving funding to support innova-
tive products in British Columbia’s
agriculture and processed food and
beverage sectors.
The family owned operation has
been baking their sourdough bread
for customers in the Kootenay region
since 1993 and now Kaslo Sourdough
is showing that traditional practices can lead to innovation. Its project will study the health benefits of its novel sour-
dough fermented pasta – named ‘Pasta Fermentata’ – including research to determine if it encourages lower blood-glu-
cose responses, influences insulin levels and benefits the gut microbiome (microorganisms in a particular environment).
“The Government of Canada is committed to investing in new and innovative agriculture and agri-food products,”
said Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “This will help Canadian producers grow their busi-
nesses and stay competitive, creating good, well paying jobs for Canadians.”
The company reports its fermented pastas have unique characteristics not found in conventional wheat pastas, such
as improved digestibility and nutrient absorption, superior flavour and a faster cooking time. It offers 12 different flour
combinations and six different shapes of its vegan and allergen-friendly pasta, providing a variety of options for their
innovative product.
“A product as creative and unique as Pasta Fermentata is an example of how British Columbians are changing the
agriculture and food processing sectors and gaining wider recognition,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture.
“The Growing Forward 2 program supports innovation, competitiveness and market development in BC’s agriculture
and food-processing sector, which supports producers on their pathway towards success.”
Kaslo Sourdough is receiving up to $75,000 in funding
through the cost-shared Canada-BC Agri-Innovation Pro-
gram under Growing Forward 2, to explore the potential
health benefits of sourdough fermented pasta.

‘Escape the City!’ contest launches!
There are reasons why so many young adults live in
metro Victoria and Vancouver. There are also reasons
why some young urban couples and families are now
considering bailing, eager to trade impossibly expen-
sive real estate, traffic gridlock, crime, pollution and
stress for a saner, more balanced existence in BC’s
small towns.
The mutual benefits seem obvious. Young profession-

towns need young newcomers with fresh skills, ideas and

To shine a light on this fit, the BC Rural Centre
announces the launch of the ‘Escape the City!’ contest,
aimed directly at young, urban creative professionals.
Winners will receive a four-night, three-day stay in the
spectacularly charming Village of Kaslo, BC, over the
Canada Day 2018 long weekend.
Kaslo has it all – a magnificent setting, lots of ame-
nities, a great school, a health clinic, housing you
don’t need to be a multi-millionaire to afford, friendly

Contest entrants simply need to upload a brief video
(two minutes or less) to the BC Rural Centre Facebook
