3 a) A band brake acts on the 3/41h circumference of drum of 450mm diameter 10

which is keyed to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of22Nm.
One end of the band is attached to a fulcrumpin of the lever and the other end
to a pin 100mm from the fulcrum. If the operating force is applied at 500mm
from the fulcrum and ~=0.25, find the operating force when the drum rotates in
anticlockwise direction.

b) A multi plate disc dutch transmits 30kW of power at J 800 rpm. It has four 10
discs on the driving shaft and three discs on the driven shaft providing six pairs
of contact surfaces. The external and internal diameters of the contact arc
surfaces are 200mm and l Otlrnm respectively. Assuming the clutch to be new,
find the total spring load pressing the plates together. Coefficient or friction is
0.3. Also, determine the maximum 'power transmitted when contact surfaces
have worn away by O.4mm. There are 8 springs and the stiffness of each spring
is 15kN/m.

4 a) The shaft of length 1.2Sm is 7Smm in diameter for the first 275mll1 of its 10
length, 12Smm in diameter for the next 500mm.length, 87.5mm in diameter for
the next 375mm length and 175mm in diameter for the remaining IOOmm of its
length. The shaft carries two rotors at two ends. The mass moment of inertia of
the first rotor is 75 kgm" whereas of the .sccond rotor is 50 kgm'', Find the
frequency of natural torsional vibrations of the system. The modulus of rigidity
of shaft material is 80 GN/m2. .

b) The turning moment diagram of a four stroke engine is assumed to be 10

represented by four triangles, the areas of which from the line of zero pressure
are
Suction stroke = 440mm2
Compression stroke = 1600 mm2
Expansion stroke = 7200 mm''
Exhaust stroke = 660 mm''
Each mm2 of area represents 3 m of energy. If the resisting torque is uniform,
determine the mass of the rim of a flywheel to keep the speed between 218 and
222rpm when the mean radius of the rim is to be 1.25m. (SSR 4G4)

5 a) The following data relate to two spiral gears in mesh. 12

Shaft angle = 90°
Centre distance = 160mm (appro x)
Normal circular pitch = 8mm
Gear ratio = 3
Friction angle = 5°
For maximum efficiency of the drive, determine the spiral angles of the teeth.

6 a) A push rod of a valve of an internal combustion engine ascends with uniform 15

equal acceleration and deceleration and thc same descends with Sf-1M. The base
circle diameter of the cam is SOmm and the push rod has a ruller of I Smr 1
diameter fitted to its end. The axis of thc rollor and the C~Lm fall on the san.c
vertical straight line. The stroke of the follower is 30mm. The angle of action
