Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy
Dear Editor,
Sub: Submission of research article – reg.
Greetings!
I herewith submit our research article entitled “Comparitive Studies on the Aqueous
Synthesis and Biocompatibility of L-Cysteine and Mercaptopropionic Acid Capped
CdSe/CdS/ZnS Core/Shell/Shell Quantum Dots” by et al. to your esteemed journal in
favour of publication.
The details related to a) Scientific motivation b) Relevance to the stated scope of
Spectrochemica Acta, Part A and c) General significance of the obtained results are enclosed
for your perusal.

a. Scientific motivation

The THz region, which lies in between microwaves and infrared region of the
electromagnetic spectrum, offers diverse applications such as wireless communications,
inspection of drugs, detection of explosives and metals, analysis of DNA, gas sensing,
spectroscopy and imaging. This article deals with the synthesis and growth of a novel
nonlinear optical crystal with potential application in THz technology and photonics devices.
However, the main limitation is to improve the growth characteristics of the material to
realize practical applications in emerging areas. Hence, an attempt has been made to grow
organic crystal of DAAS which is environmentally more stable than some of the crystals that
are currently used as devices in laser and photonics based applications. Detailed study on the
third order nonlinear properties along with spectral analysis and dielectric properties are
undertaken and reported.
b. Relevance to the stated scope of Spectrochemica Acta, Part A

The submitted research article entitled “Investigation on the linear and non-linear
optical and dielectric properties of DAAS: A potential THz crystal” by A. Antony Raj et al.,
deals with the organic nonlinear optical material with emphasis on further improving the size
of the crystal to realize its applications in terahertz time domain spectroscopy (TDS) along
with Photonics and electro optic devices. A detailed spectroscopic analysis involving
electronic, vibrational and rotational spectra for the developed sample has been carried out
employing UV-visible, PL, FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopic techniques. Further the
material under study is a potential material for generation of high frequency THz wave,
which is an active area of research due to the current and potential applications in nonlinear
spectroscopy and biomedical imaging. Especially, molecules exhibiting strong two photon
absorption (TPA) are of practical importance in photonics applications such as frequency up
conversion lasing, three-dimensional fluorescence imaging and multi photon microscopy, eye
and sensor protection, optical signal reshaping and stabilizing fast fluctuations of laser power.
Since the THz rays are non-ionizing source, it opens a new era in the field of biomedical
applications. Thus the detailed spectroscopic studies along with the potential application of
the material in biomedical and nonlinear optical field make this article relevant to the stated
scope of Spectrochemica Acta, Part A.

c. General significance of the obtained results

The submitted article deals with the synthesis and growth of single crystals of DAAS
for realizing the electrooptic and THz emission and detection. The crystals were grown by
modified growth method in order to yield crystals with large surface area than the earlier
report. Moreover, detailed investigations on spectral, elemental compositions, thermal and
dielectric studies have been carried out. The material shows intense and broad luminescence
properties which can be potentially used as a fluorescence probe monitor in the active area of
bio medical applications and also in solid state laser device fabrication. Molecules with large
third-order optical nonlinearities are essential for photonic applications including all optical
switching, data processing and sensor protection. The low dielectric constant in organic
materials promises ultrafast switching speed. Hence, the study of dielectric properties on
DAAS crystal could identify the materials suitability for EO applications. DAAS showed
enhanced thermal stability when compared to DAST as well as a few other stilbazolium
derivatives.

Thank you
