4. Define and briefly explain displacement transfer coefficient.

5. Distinguish between global and local coordinates.

6. How do we account for support motion in stiffness method?

7 What is meant by grid system? How is it different from beam element?

PART – B (5 X 15 = 75 Marks)
Answer any five only

1. Develop element stiffness matrix and global stiffness matrix for the plane truss element
with four degree of freedom. Given area of member is ‘A’ ; Young’s modulus is ‘E’
and length of member is ‘L’. Assume that this member is inclined at an angle of θx with
Global ‘X’ axis

2 Develop element transformation matrix to transfer force and displacement vectors from
local coordinate system to global coordinate system for a beam element shown in
figure below. The area of the member is ‘A’; Length of the member is ‘L’; Young’s
modulus is’E’; Moment of Inertia is’I’. Assume that this member is inclined at an angle
of θx with Global ‘X’ axis

3 A pin jointed frame is shown below. The rigidity of each bar is ’AE’. Generate element
stiffness matrix for element ‘3’ . Also generate element transformation matrix for
element ‘3’. Using element stiffness matrix and transformation matrix compute global
stiffness matrix for element ‘3’ in global coordinates. For the 4X4 stiffness matrix of
element ‘3’ indicate the corresponding global coordinates on top and side of stiffness
matrix.

4 In matrix analysis of structures with axial elements, we can consider the axial element
to have one degree, two degrees, four degrees and six degrees of freedom. Explain the
different circumstances, which call for such consideration.
5 Enumerate the steps involved in finding the force and displacement responses by the
stiffness method of analysis, under the action of both direct and indirect loads.
6 Develop element stiffness matrix for the truss element AB. Given Area of cross
section =20; Young’s Modulus of material used is 2000 and the length of member is
500.
