Lesson Overview/Rationale:
Students will learn what germs are and how to prevent them by using proper hand washing techniques.
Students will be split into two rows to complete this glitter germ experiment.

Learning Objectives:
• Students will be able to define germs.
• Students will be able to explain how germs are spread.
• Students will be able demonstrate proper hand washing techniques.
Technology Uses:
• Computer
• Projector
Materials:
• Vaseline
• Crafting Glitter
• Bowl
• Wooden Craft Sticks
Procedure:
• Teacher will Introduce germs by projecting a short youtube video about germs, viruses, bacteria, and
proper hand washing.
• Ask students what germs are and how they are spread.
• Mix the Vaseline and Glitter together in a bowl.
• Line students up in two different rows.
• Teacher will rub the glitter mixture on the first students hand.

• Have the first student in each row shake hands with the next student in line.
• Students will continue shaking hands down the line for both rows.
• Ask students why it is important to wash their hands with warm, soapy water.
• Have students wash their hands with warm soapy water.
Assessment:
• Evaluate each student as they wash their hands to make sure they understood how to properly wash
their hands.
• Ask questions to the students to check their understanding of what germs are and how they are spread.
