En línea con su voluntad de innovación
e investigación constante, la Feria Inter-
nacional de Arte Contemporáneo de
Madrid no tendrá en este 2018 un tema
central ni un país o una región como invi-
tados. El hilo conductor de ARCOmadrid,
que alcanza su 37ª edición, será un con-
cepto, el futuro, sobre el que girará un
programa expositivo que logrará reunir
a varias generaciones de artistas y muy
diferentes zonas geográficas.
Los pabellones 7 y 9 se llenarán de nuevo
del arte más actual, procedente de un
total de 211 galerías de 29 países, de las
cuales 160 integran el Programa General
en el que destaca la vuelta de Alexander
and Bonin y Team, desde Nueva York,
y Thaddaeus Ropac, de París, además
de otras importantes que mantienen
su interés por la Feria, como Barbara
Thumm, Chantal Crousel, Hauser & Wirth
o Michel Rein, y nuevas incorporaciones
como Guido W. Baudach, König Galerie
Monitor o Van Doren Waxter.
En el marco de este Programa General
tendrá lugar un calendario especial de
exposiciones y eventos comisariado por
Chus Martínez, Rosa Lleó y Elise Lam-
mer, que contará con la participación de
20 galerías y artistas cuidadosamente
seleccionados y unidos bajo un lema
inspirador: “El futuro no es lo que va a
pasar sino lo que vamos a hacer”. Las
galerías de esta sección ofrecerán a
coleccionistas, profesionales y visitantes
una personal visión del futuro con artistas
que trataron el tema en el pasado, como
Salvador Dalí o Július Koller, visiones
distópicas con Lili Reynaud Dewar,
Maryam Jafri o Eduardo Navarro, ade-
más de un marco para abordar el arte
del mañana con creadores como Teresa
Solar Abboud o Eva Fábregas.
In keeping with its drive for perpetual
innovation and inquiry, the 2018 edition
of the International Contemporary Art
Fair of Madrid will have no central theme
and no guest country or region. The over-
arching element of ARCOmadrid, now
in its 37th edition, will be a concept, the
future, which will underpin an exhibition
programme that will bring together art-
ists from different generations and very
different geographic regions.
Once again, Halls 7 and 9 will fill with
the very latest art from a total of 211
galleries from 29 different countries.
160 of these will comprise the General
Programme. Of particular interest is the
return of Alexander & Bonin and Team
from New York and Thaddaeus Ropac
from Paris, as well as other important
galleries with a continued interest in the
fair, such as Barbara Thumm, Chantal
Crousel, Hauser & Wirth and Michel Rein,
in addition to new participants like Guido
W. Baudach, König Galerie Monitor and
Van Doren Waxter.
A special programme of events and
exhibitions will be held as part of the
General Programme, curated by Chus
Martínez, Rosa Lleó and Elise Lammer
and featuring the participation of 20 care-
fully selected galleries and artists, united
under an inspiring slogan: “The future
is not what’s going to happen but what
we’re going to do”. The galleries in this
section will offer collectors, professionals
and visitors to the fair a personal vision
of the future, featuring artists who have
dealt with the topic in the past such as
Salvador Dalí and Július Koller, dysto-
pian visions from Lili Reynaud Dewar,
Maryam Jafri and Eduardo Navarro, and
a framework through which to approach
the art of tomorrow, from artists such as
Teresa Solar Abboud and Eva Fábregas.

Como en anteriores ediciones, ARCO-
madrid presentará también otras seccio-
nes comisariadas. El programa Diálogos
contará con la participación de 14 gale-
rías seleccionadas por María de Corral,
Lorena Martínez de Corral y Catalina
Lozano, cuyos estands generarán conte-
nidos nuevos al tiempo que servirán para
presentar obras de artistas como Carlos
Garaicoa y Juan Araujo (Luisa Streina),
Armando Andrade Tudela y Tamar Gui-
maraes (Fortes d’Aloia & Gabriel) o Ryan
McGinley y Tabor Robak (Team).
La sección Opening, centrada en galerías
con una trayectoria de un máximo de sie-
te años, estará formada por 19 galerías,
con uno o dos artistas por estand, selec-
cionadas por Stefanie Hessler e Ilaria
Gianni. Un programa que contempla una
investigación más allá de los focos habi-
tuales con la participación de galerías
como El Apartamento (La Habana), Gray
Noise (Dubai), Sindicato (Santo Domingo)
o Tiro al Blanco (Guadalajara, México).
Como es habitual habrá Encuentros
Profesionales, la Sesión de Trabajo de
Museos, el Encuentro de Museos de Euro-
pa e Iberoamérica y diferentes actividades
e iniciativas, como la novedosa Young
Collectors, que, con la participación de
30 jóvenes coleccionistas internacionales,
ayudará a impulsar el coleccionismo en la
que es la principal plataforma española
del mercado del arte.

As in previous editions, ARCOmadrid
will also present other curated sections.
The Dialogues programme will feature
the participation of 14 galleries selected
by María de Corral, Lorena Martínez de

senting works by artists such as Carlos

The Opening section, which focuses on
galleries that have been open for seven

Meetings, the Museums Working Session 2 3

lectors, will help to promote collecting via
Spain’s main art market platform.

Durante diez días, la Plaza Ma-
yor acogerá la instalación Ma-
drid 1.8 de la artista estadou-
nidense Janet Echelman. Una
monumental escultura flotante
formada por una malla com-
puesta por capas de fibra tren-
zada y anudada de 45 metros
de largo por 35 de ancho y 21
de alto en combinación con
una iluminación espectacular.
Esta instalación es la última
de las intervenciones artísticas
del programa de arte urbano
Cuatro Estaciones que se
ha llevado a cabo durante el
último año con motivo del IV
Centenario de la Plaza Mayor.
El concepto de la obra pro-
viene de conjuntos de datos
científicos del terremoto y el
tsunami de Japón en 2011,
y de la noción de que todos
estamos conectados entre los
sistemas naturales de la Tie-
rra. Studio Echelman generó
la forma 3D de la escultura
utilizando grupos de datos de
la altura de las olas a lo largo
de todo el océano Pacífico.
Las vibraciones resultantes
aceleraron momentáneamen-
te la rotación de la Tierra,
acortando la longitud del día
en 1.8 microsegundos, lo que
se convirtió en el catalizador
de la escultura.
La escultura es completamente
blanda y está construida con
dos tipos de fibra técnica. El
polietileno de peso molecular
ultra alto, una fibra más de
quince veces más fuerte que el
acero, constituye la parte es-
tructural de la pieza. Cordones
de nylon de alta resistencia con
mezclas únicas de color con-
forman el resto de la red escul-
tórica, y Echelman los combina
con luces de colores progra-
madas para crear la obra final.
La artista nacida en Tampa Ja-
net Echelman es un referente
del arte urbano internacional
y sus instalaciones se pueden
encontrar en destacados es-
pacios urbanos de Estados
Unidos como el Smithsonian
Art Museum , el Aeropuerto In-
ternacional de San Francisco,
el campus de la Fundación Bill
& Melinda Gates en Seattle o
el casco antiguo de Phoenix.
Esta obra que se verá ahora
en Madrid sirve para iniciar una
nueva programación cultural en
la Plaza Mayor durante 2018,
como legado fundamental de
su IV Centenario.
For ten days, Plaza Mayor will
host the installation Madrid
1.8 by American artist Janet
Echelman. The monumental
floating net sculpture is made
of layers of fibre braided and
knotted together. It measures
45 metres long, 35 metres wide
and 21 metres high, and is
illuminated with a spectacular
use of light. This installation is
the last of the art interventions
included in the Four Seasons
urban art programme that
was held throughout 2017 to
celebrate Plaza Mayor’s 4 th
Centenary.
The work was inspired by
scientific data sets on the
earthquake and tsunami that
originated in Japan in 2011,
and the notion that we are all
interconnected with the Earth’s
natural systems. Studio Echel-
man generated the sculpture’s
3D form using data sets on the
height of the tsunami waves
that rippled across the entire
Pacific Ocean. The resulting
vibrations momentarily accel-
erated the Earth’s rotation,
shortening the day’s length by
1.8 microseconds, a phenom-
enon that became the catalyst
for the sculpture.
The sculpture is completely
soft, built with two types
of technical fibre. The core
structure of the piece is made
of ultra-high molecular weight
polyethylene, a fibre over fif-
teen times stronger than steel.
High-resistance nylon strands
featuring unique colour combi-
nations make up the rest of the
net sculpture, and Echelman
pairs them with programmed
coloured lights to create the
final piece.

Urvanity is the only fair in Spain devoted to
New Contemporary Art. It is committed
to championing works which are rooted
in the artistic expression that developed
in the urban context from the 1970s
onwards, but which create an exchange
with modernity today. Of particular note
amongst the artists whose works can be
viewed at this second edition are London
graffiti artist D* Face, Shepard Fairey, bet-
ter known by his alter ego, Obey, Cranio,
famous for his blue-toned drawings of
Brazil’s indigenous people, M. Chat, who
draws cats, Kai and Sunny, the multidis-
ciplinary duo of designers, and Augustine
Kofie, known for his abstract murals with
a retro-futurist aesthetic.

Una exposición sobre el desarrollo creativo de Andy
Warhol, desde sus inicios como diseñador gráfico
en Nueva York hasta su muerte, convertido ya en un
mito universal del arte pop. La muestra subraya la
forma en la que captó el culto a la mercancía surgido
de las invenciones industriales del siglo XIX.

 SOROLLA Y LA MODA SOROLLA AND FASHION
Sorolla es el cronista perfecto de los cambios en las
tendencias en la indumentaria a finales del siglo XIX
y principios del XX. Sus obras reúnen un evocador
catálogo de vestidos, joyas y complementos, real-
zados por su trazo suelto y vigoroso. La muestra se
realiza conjuntamente en el Museo Thyssen-Borne-
misza y en el Museo Sorolla.
Sorolla was an impeccable chronicler of the changes
in clothing trends between the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. His works make up an atmospheric cata-
logue of clothing, jewellery and accessories, all of

Para esta obra la artista belga Miet Warlop ha creado

#FlenMad que trae a Madrid hasta el 20 de mayo a

El ya tradicional festival reúne en su octava edición a
los mejores magos del mundo. Del 8 al 11 de febrero
tendrá lugar Magia de cerca, que, en la intimidad de
la Sala Parish, permitirá a 100 personas por pase
disfrutar de la cartomagia, micromagia y otras espe-
cialidades de maestros del ilusionismo como son
los españoles Pere Rafart y Miguel Ángel Gea y el
estadounidense Adam Rubin. Del 14 de febrero al
11 de marzo se sucederán, en la Gala de Magia de
Escena, grandes figuras nacionales como Jorge

 CARNAVAL CARNIVAL
Dos son los distritos donde tendrán lugar este año las
fiestas de Carnaval: Puente de Vallecas, que cuenta
con casi 40 años de tradición, y Retiro. Durante el fin
de semana se desarrollará una programación com-
puesta por el ya tradicional desfile, conciertos para
todo tipo de públicos, una verbena con chocolatada
y la muestra de murgas, comparsas y chirigotas.
Además, los niños y niñas de Madrid podrán dis-
frutar de forma especial de esta celebración, ya que
habrá un sinfín de propuestas infantiles de música,
teatro y magia. Y como ya es tradición, el Carnaval de
Madrid finalizará el miércoles día 14 con el entierro de
la sardina que realiza la Alegre Cofradía, entidad que
este año celebra su 250º aniversario.

Comienza el Año del Perro y Madrid lo celebra con
un sinfín de actividades. La plaza de la Junta de Dis-
trito de Usera volverá a ser el escenario principal de
estas fiestas. La inauguración oficial correrá a cargo
de diferentes asociaciones chinas y del grupo de
música You and I (día 16, 17:30 h). Ese mismo día
dará comienzo la Feria de Año Nuevo, en una gran
carpa donde se podrá comprar artesanía, además
de saborear deliciosos platos en la food truck instala-
da justo al lado. El punto fuerte será el Pasacalles de
Año Nuevo (día 18, 12:00 h). Cuentacuentos, talleres
y clases básicas de chino completan un programa en
el que destaca también la Ceremonia de los Deseos
de los Farolillos Flotantes (día 17, 16:30 h).

Primera edición de este festival internacional que
convertirá a Madrid en capital de diseño. Habrá
ambiciosas propuestas repartidas por diferentes
sedes, como CentroCentro, que acogerá la expo-
sición Viva la diferencia, una muestra en torno a la
customización de productos, o el Fernán Gómez.
Centro Cultural de la Villa, donde se podrá ver una
retrospectiva del trabajo del diseñador Jaime Hayón.
El mismo centro albergará otras dos muestras: Vini-
ligráfica y Los electrodomésticos en nuestra vida.
Una historia del diseño. Por su parte, el Museo ABC
realizará, bajo el título Déco 1930, una revisión del
diseño de interiores de los años 30. Entre los días
14 y 16 tendrá lugar en el COAM el programa de
Jornadas Profesionales, que reunirá a figuras cla-
ves del sector. La ciudad invitada será Helsinki, que
mostrará lo mejor de su industria con exposiciones,
charlas e instalaciones urbanas.
