2.P.3A. Solids and liquids are two forms of matter that have distinct observable properties.
Some matter can be mixed together and then separated again. Solids and liquids can be
changed from one form to another when heat is added or removed.
Objective:
The student will be able to identify mixtures and solutions by combining solids and liquids.
Materials:
● KWL Chart
● Anchor Chart
● Experiment Supplies for all 6 groups
● Experiment recording papers
● Chex Mix
● Chex Mix Analysis Assessment Papers
● Sticky Notes
Procedures
Hook:
1. Complete a KWL Chart
a. What do we know about solids and liquids?
b. What do we know about mixtures and solutions?
c. What do we want to know about mixtures and solutions?
Teacher Input:
1. Teacher uses anchor chart to explain the differences in mixtures and solutions.
Guided Practice:
1. Group Experiments: Each group will complete an experiment and complete the
experiment analysis paper.
1. Group 1: Crystal Light powder mix + water
2. Group 2: Coins
3. Group 3: Beans and Rice
4. Group 4: Sugar and Water
2. Circle Time: Each group shares about their experiment. Groups tell whether their
substances are mixtures or solutions and why.
Independent Practice:
1. Chex Mix Analysis Assessment
a. Teacher displays directions on board.
Closing:
1. Sticky Note: Each student jots down 1 example of a mixture and 1 example of a
solution. (Places on anchor chart)
Assessments:
1. Students will be given a small sample of chex mix.
2. Students will separate the sample.
3. Students will complete the experiment sheet.
