Case Problem #2: “A General Hospital”

Date of Submission: March 22, 2015

Abstract

The City of Makati has decided to have a new City Hospital built on a site located along Pasong Tamo
Extension. Although there is a new development in place, the city would like to explore the possibility of
creating a medical facilty on the site just in case future options become available on the property. In line with
this, the Local Government Unit has partnered with one of its American sister cities, San Francisco, and it has
been kind enough to provide them with a copy of the space programming of the current general hospital in the
same city. You are tasked to prepare a plan proposal for the new hospital using the same programme. As an
adjustment, you shall make conversions on the areas specified from the provided imperial area measurements
to metric area measurements.

Submission of the work shall be on May 20, 2013 with the following minimum drawing requirements:

• Floor Plan/s (Scale 1:100 in M)


• Site Development Plan (Scale 1:200 in M)
• Four (4) Elevations (Scale 1:100 in M)
• Two (2) Sections (Scale 1:100 in M)
• Interior Perspectives (Lobby , Bedrooms and Manager’s Office)
• Two- Point Exterior Perspective (Aerial View)
• Brief description the design concept not less than 500 words on a Concept Sheet including
1. Design Considerations

2. Design Objectives

3. Design Philosophy

Please use the graphic scale on the site map as your reference for site measurements.

Concept Sheet
You shall create a narrative or explanation on how your form concepts and abstract came about. Please use
1500 words at most. It would be helpful if you can include a one-line summary of this explanation. This shall act
as you Design concept.

You shall also include a list of six to nine design considerations that you believe should be part of the variables
affecting your design in relation to your design concept. Kindly explain them.

Schedule of submittals

▪ March 8, 2018- Preliminary Design Presentation- Includes pedestrian and


vehicular circulation (i.e. massing and site development plan, 1-line drawings
are a minimum requirement) concepts, important technologies and theories
in hospital design. Also included shall be concepts on ecological balance
and sustainability
▪ March 13, 2018- Schematic Design Presentation- Includes drawings
(plans, elevations, sections) of your concept including preliminary
perspectives (exterior, interior) with explanations on the corrections done,
together with site analysis data together with explanations of the circulation
and user profiles (patients and staff), reflection on related professional
practice concepts (i.e. Professional Fees and the like, pertinent building laws
and exceptions thereof)

▪ March 20, 2018- Detailed Design Presentation- includes semi-final


design presentation with several works already rendered. This will include
plans, elevations, sections, site development plan and at least 1
perspectives, presentation for school submittal shall be via PowerPoint using
a PechaKucha format (20 slides x 20 seconds each). Presentation shall
include reflections on Cultural attitude towards hospital design (i.e.
rehabilitative versus punitive) as reflected in building character
▪ March 23, 2018- Submitted Final Design Presentation drawings
which will include, at least, your narratives, final illustrations, details, etc.
together with explanations on the media used for the final output (i.e. photo
editing, CAD, etc.)

All previously submitted drawings from March 8 to March 20 shall be submitted as


part of the final output on March 23, 2018 showing progress of your work and with
corrections based on previous evaluations.

• E-file submission
▪ 3D model (SKP Files)
• All works shall be done via Google SketchUp 8.0 version or lower.
• The Model will include SCENES which shall show the following:
Site development Plan
Elevations
Floor Plans
Sections
Perspectives (as specified)
Any other drawings indicated in the paper submission requirement
as the designer deems necessary
• The Model shall have measurements indicating scale and
dimension (i.e. call outs with dimension and label)
• Works needing Google SketchUp Pro in any version for viewing is highly
discouraged
• PDF Files
◦ All works to be submitted via PDF shall be easily opened with Adobe
Acrobat Reader X version or lower
◦ Any other E-file submission shall be deemed unacceptable
