Winter is here…
2k18
What’s up everyone!?
NEWSFLASH! Quarter is ending, but hopefully I can distract you a bit with this
newsletter… At least, I’m distracting myself
from studying by writing this.. So I’ll just go
on a rant!
I transferred here last year from a
community college in Santa Cruz, which was
on the semester system, and I’m always
SHOCKED by how fast the quarter goes.
Literally feels like week 1 was just last week..
Anyway, it has me thinking about Senior year
and I get really happy thinking of all the
experiences I’ve had in Davis.
I joined the triathlon team last quarter and a
couple weekends ago I competed for the first
time in San Diego and scored points for
UCD! I’ve had an amazing time working as
peer advisor as well, and I’ve met some truly
amazing people! I’ve also been interning in
the Emergency Department at UCDMC as a
part of the EMRAP team. UCD has so much
to offer!
Actually, it was through EMRAP where I got
to know Alex Greb (Pharm Chem Major).
After getting to know her better, I asked if I
could interview her for the newsletter (Page 5).
With that said, read on and feel free to hit me up if you have any ideas of what
you’d like to see in the newsletter!

Alex Greb
I had the great opportunity to meet up with my friend Alex and ask her a few questions about her life and her
experience at UC Davis. Alex came to UCD as a freshman in 2014, originally from the East Bay. She loves coffee
shops here in town, going to watch a flick at the Varsity, and catching a vegetarian meal at Bernardos. As she
prepares to graduate next spring with a B.S. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, she had a lot of cool things to share!

As we sat out on the grass in the quad, drinking our hot drinks in the chilly afternoon, some sunshine finally
came down and I got to ask her some questions: Al: Alex Au: Aubrey

Au: What are some things in Davis you do?

Al: I like biking and not having to drive. When I first toured the school as a prospective student, I immediately
noticed people were really friendly. I felt a strong sense of community and I liked that there was a good mix between
college and suburban living and Davis is not too metropolitan. I got involved in the community and started
volunteering for the Davis Senior Center, where I play piano during their lunch hour. I also like going to the movies
on Tuesday’s discount days and I love going to the Varsity!

Au: When did you decide to major in chemistry?

Al When I took AP chemistry in High School, I didn’t enjoy it. My teacher

was not nice and the class was hard, unnecessarily. But then I took Human
Anatomy and Physiology and I became fascinated with the connections between
the topics I was learning and the chemistry behind them. That sparked my
interest in chemistry, and when I started my major at UCD I knew that I had made
the right choice!.

Au: Tell me about your Research Lab.

Al: As a sophomore I interviewed for Dr. Olson. At first he didn’t give me an

immediate acceptance, so I looked for other labs but I realized that I was still
very interested in Dr. Olson’s lab research. So I was persistent and tried again. I
tried my best to convey my genuine passion, and at the end Dr. Olson
appreciated that, and I became his first undergraduate student. My role in Dr.
Olson’s lab really emphasizes the pharmacology aspect of chemistry. In the lab, I
do cell cultures and test pharmacological compounds, and I do fluorescence
microscopy, computer analysis … it’s very cross discipline.

Au Do you have any advice for someone interested in starting the

search for undergrad research?

My advice is that it’s okay to really want things.. to try really hard to get them
(while also being respectful/polite). and don’t be discouraged if you don’t have
experience, just have a willingness to learn and willingness to put in the time.

Au: What are your plans after graduation?

Al: I plan to pursue medicine and research by going down an M.D./Ph.D route. I have taken my MCAT and will
submit my medical school applications this year. Chemistry has taught me about research and I believe that having a
chemistry background to pursue the life sciences has really helped enrich my understanding and interest in
medicine!

--

Well Alex, it was a pleasure catching up with you and learning more about the amazing things you do! Keep in
touch with the Chemistry Department. I’m sure in the future there will be many students still interested on where
your journey has taken you!
