USAFA Falcons Youth Hockey – Board Meeting

Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 @ 7pm

Clune Areana

1. Welcome and Introductions

 We will be having monthly or bi-monthly meetings from now until the next season starts. Please
check your email and Facebook or Twitter for announcements. Everyone is welcome and
encouraged to attend.

2. Treasurer’s Report
 Monies are limited in their usage based on their source.

 We didn’t have the money this season to buy jackets for the coaches which is something we’ve done
in past years and would like to do again in future years.

 Youth Center money has to be zeroed out of the account each year. We have until May 1 to zero
out the funds. These funds can be used to purchase end of season banners but they cannot be
used to personalize the banners, we will need to use association money for that.

 Bob Koenig is the current treasurer. We missed out on a Chuck-a-Puck when the government went
through the shutdown. That is money we cannot recapture and impacts financial projections.

 Huge thanks to our $1000 sponsor this year! It made a huge difference!!!

3. President’s Report
 We NEED ice next year. Ice dictates everything that we do. We are in competition for ice with
dancers and figure skaters at the Academy. PLEASE see the volunteer positions below. We NEED
an ice advocate ASAP!

 Mites are a complicated age grouping. There are beginner, intermediate and advanced players.
The more stratified they are the more difficult it is to administer their program and coaching.

 We need someone to be a rink advocate. This is extremely important. Ice is running $200 / hour
at USAFA and $205 / hour at Honnen. Scheduling and rink / ice advocate are not mutually
exclusive. We need to get in there and buy ice and then we can divvy it amongst the teams as part
of the scheduling.

 Prices for registration will be going up next year. We’re looking at $700 for the season for mites.
Stay tuned for more. We are still the best deal in town. We are a recreational program.

4. New Items
A. Volunteers – please see full list below. Sign up wherever you can.

B. End of Year Parties – each age group will arrange their own. Always consider the idea of a family skate
like we’ve done in past years.
A. Banners – covered in President’s Report

C. Upcoming tournaments

A. Schedule Adjustments USAFA – due to NCAA demands we’ve had to split the tournament over
two weekends.

B. We need a host at USAFA even if it is not our kids playing.

D. Next Season

A. Number of skaters – number of skaters is decided by how much ice we get. Currently we’re at
about our maximum number of skaters with the ice we have and we can handle about 100
skaters (give or take).

B. Jerseys – we need away jerseys. Having practice jerseys with different numbers than game
jerseys has been problematic this season. Jerseys and socks are going for about $75. So
either this cost will be rolled into the registration and rates will be higher or we need to consider
turning jerseys back in at the end of the season and recycling them from year to year. There
was some discussion on both sides of this issue.

C. Programs (Mites, Squirts, PeeWee, Bantam) – offer all the current levels we have this year again
next year.

i. Midget? Is this something that we’d like to look into so our older kids don’t age out.
We’ll have to work with the high school JV programs if we are going to make this work.

D. Travel Hockey – do we want to look at having select groups of kids take on tournament play and
make a distinction between our team levels? This goes to the root of who we are. We don’t
weight teams, we make them even. We also will no longer allow kids to play up as it makes
rosters and paperwork extremely burdensome.

E. Other items

i. CPR for all the coaches

ii. Also want to do more coaching certifications

iii. If you’re able to help out with anything, please let us know

iv. We’ll be looking at revising and reviewing the Bylaws of the Association

v. We didn’t make use of the off ice options for training at the Youth Center

vi. We’re not sure we will be able to accommodate players who can never make Sundays in the
future. If we have players that cannot make it always on one day it creates issues with
rostering and tournament play.
