Among the issues directly affecting people everywhere is intrastate or civil

war. People are terrorized by war between organized groups within the country.

People who caused the war aims to take control of the region in order to achieve

independence for a region or to put up a new government. Various civil wars

were origins way back from the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC (Jackson,

2014).

According to Patrick M. Regan in his book Civil Wars and Foreign Powers

(2000) about two thirds of the 138 intrastate conflicts between the end of World

War II and 2000 saw international intervention, with the United States intervening

in 35 of these conflicts. A known historical war that happened in 2003 was the

intrastate war of Iraq, which triggered a wave of violence and turmoil in the

country. Households were exposed to insecurity and instability in daily life as

well as the imbalanced nutrition of the affected population (Serdan, 2012).

The Philippines is not excluded of the global issue. One example

happened in 2003 was the Zamboanga City crisis or Zamboanga Siege. It was

the conflict between the Philippine government and a faction of the Moro National

Liberation Front (MNLF) under the Sulu State Revolutionary Command (SSRC)

led by Ustadz Habier Malik and Khaid Ajibon. The crisis erupted on September 9,

2013 when this MNLF faction attempted to raise the flag of the self-proclaimed

Bangsamoro Republik at Zamboanga City Hall, which had earlier declared its

independence on August 12, 2013 in Talipao, Sulu. This armed incursion has

been a "humanitarian crisis". The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the

Philippine National Police (PNP) sought to free the hostages and expel the MNLF
from the city. The standoff degenerated into urban warfares and caused the

displacement of more than 100,000 people, the occupation of several villages by

the MNLF, deaths of several civilians, closure of the Zamboanga International

Airport, and a reduction of economic activity in the city (Reuters, 2013).

Moreover, the Marawi siege was a five-month-long armed conflict in

Marawi, Lanao del Sur that started last May 23, 2017 between Philippine

government security forces and militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq

and the Levant (ISIL), including the Maute and Abu Sayyaf Salafi jihadist groups.

The battle also became the longest urban battle in the modern history of the

Philippines. Isnilon Hapilon, the leader of the Islamic State of Lanao (ISIL) -

affiliated Abu Sayyaf group, and Maute group had a deadly firefight fire to the

combined Army and police teams The clash caused massive destruction of

several buildings in the city (Gutierrez, 2017).

Henceforth, the paper will address the channels through which the conflict

has affected the psychosocial health. Given the empirical evidence of the impact

that 80% of the displaced population residing temporarily in Davao City had

unstable mental health in which the results are of great importance for the future

intervention.
