Re-Inventing Japan Project

AUN-KU Student Mobility Program toward

Human Security Development
The ASEAN University Network (AUN)-Kyoto University (KU) Student Mobility Program toward
Human Security Development was launched in the 2012 academic year and funded by the "Re-Inventing
Japan Project" of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japan. Following
Kyoto University's principles regarding international relations as well as its tradition of education and
research with a global outlook and respect for regional cultures, this program aims to promote various
forms of international exchange that will lead to longer-term and more creative international collabora-
tions between KU and AUN. Seven departments from Kyoto University-the Graduate School of Agri-
cu lture, Graduate School of Energy Science, Department of Southeast Asian Area Studies from the
Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, School of Public Health from the Graduate School
of Medicine, Institute of Advanced Energy, Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and Organization for
the Promotion of International Relations-and AUN have collaborated to establish an education
consortium that offers ambitious programs to both undergraduate and master's students: a summer
school, double master's degree program, and single degree program under joint supervision.

*Kyoto University is the only Japanese university to establish a Memorandum of Agreement on General Academic
Exchange with AUN.

Synergy
Objective Challenge X X Creation

The AUN-KU Student Mobility Program

aims to develop new generations of globa l
leaders. The expected types of future global
leaders are as follows:
• Actively work for academic institutions
and universities, global entrepreneurs, governmental bodies, or international institutions, and
dedicate themselves to challenging a variety of issues beyond national borders and in synergy with
individual regions.
• Advance research on "human security" development in cooperation with local researchers by com·
bining knowledge in different fields of studies.
• Contribute to finding potential natural and human resources in a region and creating new indus-
tries in collaboration with local societies.
• Actively contribute to policy proposals and international negotiations while considering the dispari-
ties and diversity among different regions and paying attention to the national interests of different
countries.

The ASEAN University Network (AUN) - Kyoto University (KU) Stu-

dent Mobility Program toward Human Security Development was selected as
part of the "Re-Inventing Japan Project" in the 2012 financial year. Based on
the existing agreement for academic exchange and cooperation between AUN
and KU signed in 2009, the Student Mobility Program aims to form an academic consortium (KU -
AUN Consortium), and nurture future leaders to be able to work across national borders and connect
with individual regions to create a positive synergetic effect.

Currently, the resea r ch and development of effective measures against global issues, such as
large-scale disasters and global warming, are essential. This will be accomplished through the promo-
tion of a comprehensive, interdisciplinary education system focused on the development of human
security and the advancement of human-security principles across
national boundaries. In Asia, the population is expected to age rap-
idly following its recent explosive population growth, creating vari-
ous challenges related to food and water resources, energy and en-
vironment, and public health. These challenges urgently require
long-term sustainable solutions that take local social systems into
consideration.

In the program, various courses, lectures, and summer schools

in subjects related to human security, including food and water
resources , energy and environment, and public health , will be
developed and offered to graduate and undergraduate students.
This program will incorporate the characteristic strengths of each
participating region and will be eligible for credit transfers at par-
ticipating universities. Consistent opportunities to gain a sense of
mission, master an issue, and create a solution towards global
issues will be provided to participating students.

Kyoto University places an emphasis on the Asian region and

has a long tradition of fieldwork studies incorporated not only into
the social sciences, but also the nat ural sciences. With two overseas
liaison offices and eight field-stations in ASEAN regions in addi-
tion to several 21st-Century Center of Excellences (COE) programs
and Global COE programs, Kyoto University has promoted mutual
exchange progra ms for research and education with ASEAN
regions. Support systems for participating students have been also
successfully prepared.

We endeavor to nurture high-minded future leaders who will advance the cause of human security
development. I look forward to working with everyone involved in the program and would ask for the
understanding and support of everyone involved.

Experience
The summer school program is offered to undergraduate
students, who are expected to learn how to identify problems in
consideration of both local and global contexts.

Learn
The Executive Committee of the AUN-KU Student Mobility
Program, composed of representatives from KU and AUN
member universities, has established a collaborative master's
program by utilizing a credit transfer system. The AUN-KU
Student Mobility Program also offers common subjects and
major subjects in the fields of "Food a nd Water Resources,"
"Energy and Environment," and "Public Health."

Create
Students are expected to deepen their knowledge of their major
fields, select an issue to tackle, and conduct research to elaborate
a solution to the issue for their master's thesis. Master's students
may also participate in the summer school to instruct undergradu-
ate students, which will be evaluated'by their supervisors.

Summer school
The KU-AUN Education Consortium offers a summer school program to undergraduate students.

3
Summer schools are conducted in Kyoto and the surrounding area as well as in ASEAN countries.
During the course of the two-week summer school, participant students learn on site about agriculture,
energy, environment, and their related fields of study in the context of "human security development."
The field of study depends on the theme of the summer school. Students also experience the local
culture and society, and communicate with people. Thus, the students are expected to learn how to
identify problems while considering both the local and global contexts.

Master's program

The KU-AUN Education Consortium offers three kinds of master's programs: three-year
double-major double-degree; two-year double degree; two-year single-degree under joint supervision.
The double-degree programs are offered by KU and its six partner universities: Gadjah Mada
University (Indonesia), Institute of Technology Bandung (Indonesia), University of Malaya
(Malaysia), Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), National University of Singapore, and Kasetsart
University (Thailand, a non-member of AUN). The two-year single-degree program under joint
supervision is offered by KU and the other 25 AUN member universities that do not offer the
double-degree program.

1. Three-year double-major double-degree program

This program provides students with an opportunity to obtain two master's degrees in two majors
over a period of three years, one from an AUN member university and the other from KU. To obtain two
master 's degrees in two different two-year master's programs usually takes four years, but this
program enables students to finish it in three years by offering intensive courses and utilizing a credit
transfer system. The fields of study provided in this program are "Food and Water Resources" and
"Energy and Environment."
Students in the double-degree program are enrolled at both an AUN member university and KU for
three years (due to differences in academic calendars, enrolment at KU begins in October). Students
conduct coursework and research at the AUN member university in the first year, and then move to
Japan and conduct coursework and research, write their thesis, and pass the thesis defense at KU in
the second year. Subsequently, they return to the AUN member university where they continue
research work and submit another thesis. On succeeding the second thesis defense at the AUN member
university, two master's degrees are conferred.

2. Two-year double-degree program

This program provides students with an opportunity to obtain two master's degrees over a period
of two years, one from an AUN member university and the other from KD. The field of study offered in
this program is "Public Health."
Participant students take a one-year master's in public health (MPH) program at an AUN member
university and two-year MPH program at KD. To obtain two master's degrees in these programs
usually takes three years, but this program enables students to finish it in two years by offering inten-
sive courses and utiliZIng a credit transfer system.
Students in the double-degree program are jointly enrolled at an AUN member university and KU
for two years (due to difference ,in academic calendars, enrolment at KU begins in October). Students
conduct coursework (if necessary) and research, submit a thesis , and complete their thesis defense at
the AUN member university in the first year. In the second year, they move to Japan and study at KD.
After successfully completing the second thesis defense at KU, two master's degrees are conferred.
