DANIEL LOWINGER PDF

What's Old Is New - and Surprisingly Strong! The world's oldest opening variation, 3...Qd8 in the
Scandinavian Defense, has resurfaced in the last decade to give players at all levels a winning edge. Whether
you prefer a sharp tactical game or slower positional maneuvering, the 3...Qd8 Scandinavian provides a
genuine alternative for club players and grandmasters seeking to play for a win from the outset. Elite players
such as Michael Adams, Josif Dorfman, Kiril Georgiev and Julian Hodgson, among others, have successfully
raised the banner of the 3...Qd8 Scandinavian. As the author demonstrates, this variation's doubtful
reputation is undeserved. It is completely playable - and easy to learn! 3...Qd8 is not the ugly duckling
sibling of 3...Qa5 and 3...Qd6 - it is a superb alternative. "Dan's a strong player, but he's an even stronger
teacher. The book sparkles with practical insight, lucidly explained.” International Grandmaster Zviad Izoria

3...Qd8
By Gofrillier
The book does have value in that almost everyone ignores 3...Qd8 in preparing for the Center Counter. As a
"B" player I understand the opening and then as usual for my level of play, I can't find a plan of action and
when I play through the games Daniel offers, I keep asking myself, "Why did he do that?" What needs to be
written is a book that explains not only the opening but the middle-game ideas and ways to prepare for the
eventual ending. The book shouldn't be entitled "The 3...Qd8 Scandinavian: Simple and Strong." It should be
entitled "The 3...Qd8 Scandinavian: Simple and Solid." Because it's not particularly strong, it's just a hard
nut to crack, especially if you have not studied it from White's point of view.

Good book, but it's not always easy to navigate
By Brian C
Overall, I like the book, and it has plenty of good information --- it's hard to find a comprehensive treatment
of the Qd8 variation elsewhere. The author wrote the book to counter the common belief that this line is less
worthy than Black's other third move options in the Scandinavian, and I think he does a decent job.

Bibliography
Index of Variations
Player Index

The author talks in the early part of the book about the history of the Qd8 variation and suggests the basic
ideas of how to utilize it. Each chapter has an introduction which groups the following games within useful
categories. The chapters also have a "quick recap" at the end to offer some brief conclusions on the lines
studied in those games. And fortunately, the book has an index of variations and a players index.

I should also mention that the vast majority of the book is a collection of annotated games, and that the
annotations can be a bit sparse at times. The main body of the book is 172 pages long and contains 122(!)
annotated games; some of these fit comfortably within a single full page. While some games have more
prose than others, it's not very unusual for the author to list quite a few moves between annotations,
sometimes even in the early stages of a game. The author assumes that the reader can connect a few dots on
his/her own.

With so many annotated games within a book of very ordinary size, it can be slightly difficult to navigate at
times. In Chapters 3 & 5, it's a challenge to keep track at times because Lowinger will skip back-and-forth
between two lines from game-to-game numerous times in the chapter. This might be done because, in some
cases, consecutive games eventually transpose to a common position anyway, but he will jump back-and-
forth for a different reason altogether in other games. In the chapter 5 intro, he tells us those games are
categorized "by conceptual similarities, not identical early move orders" (page 132). The categories are
informative (games are grouped by whether White plays Bxf6 or whether both players castle same side), but
again, you'll need to look at those games yourself, or the index, to know precisely which line goes with
which game.

The chapter introductions and index of variations help you keep track of exactly which games go with which
lines, but I wasn't crazy about having to refer to them this often. The book is both well-written and a little
hard to follow at the same time.

Despite a reservation or two, it's still a welcome addition to my chess library --- I'm glad I bought it.

The whole point of this system is to get into a pretty favorable/solid version of a Caro-Kann
By Erik C. Knudsen
Want to learn a very solid defense in just a few weekends? Then give this book a read. Daniel Lowinger
offers up an interesting move (3...Qd8) in the Scandinavian as an alternative to ...Qa5 or ...Qd6. The whole
point of this system is to get into a pretty favorable/solid version of a Caro-Kann. So if you already play that
opening, it may be even more of a reason to try out this system as a surprise weapon or maybe you are ahead
in a tournament and have the Black pieces in the final round. Maybe play more positional game that offers
decent chances but not a lot of risk? It's nice to have options!

The author walks the reader through the history of the opening and then goes into some analysis as to why it
was largely forgotten (some games with Michael Adams are covered). After some improvements, the system
now has several high-level followers. Note that Carlsen recently trotted this opening system out against
Caruana (and beat him).

As to the writer's style, he focuses on plans and ideas vs a lot of analysis. It's a pretty thin book with over 100
games. So in that sense you are getting a lot of coverage but not necessarily tons of deep analysis, which is
fine by me as I am only a mid-level tournament player. The author is respected chess coach and very active
over the board. The ...Qd8 Scandinavian is part of his opening repertoire. In my opinion that says a lot about
this system. If it's good enough for a senior master, then it's likely good enough for just about everyone,
especially the adult players who don't wish to spend tons of time memorizing theory.

What didn't I like about the book? At this price (and number of games/pages) it's hard to be overly critical.
Maybe some more coverage of 5th move alternatives by White (5 Nf3 or 5 Bf4) since the book tends to
focus on lines where the White King Bishop comes out to c4. Off the top of my head I cannot say if there's
much coverage to e4 d5 exd5 Qxd5 Nc3 Qd8 d4 Nf6 and now Nf3 [note: I'll edit this review if there are a
few games that cover these lines]. Again, I do not want to be overly critical here. A quick search in a
database will help churn up some games, or ideas, in any given opening system. So it's not very hard to fill in
a gap or two if the book doesn't cover a specific line.

Summary:

If you want a solid and reliable system that an be learned in a very short span of time, by all means give this
book a shot. In my opinion the downside is minimal since you won't invest a lot of time with respect to home
preparation and the emphasis here is that you can just "play chess." For those of you who play tournament
chess and want more of a stress free approach with the Black pieces, this book is worthy of a read for sure. I
don't think the 'maintenance' is is nearly as bad vs some razor sharp systems in the Spanish, Sicilian, Pirc,
etc. My overall impression is that Black reaches equality early on (sometimes before move 10) and White
can get into big trouble by overextending himself. You'll have to read this book to see if reach the same
conclusions!
