Activity Title: What are the properties of Solutions? Activity No:5
Reference (s): Estrellita A. Madriaga, Science Links 7 Worktext for Scientific and Technological Literacy
Learning Target/s:
Investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated solutions by:
1.1 Identifying the compositions of solutions.
1.2 Classify solutions according to phase or state.
1.3 Perform laboratory activity to describe the properties of solutions.
I. ESSENTIAL IDEAS:
Solution –is a type of mixture formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent to form a single-phase that appears
uniform throughout. A solution is often clear and transparent and it is composed of:
a. Solute – substances that are dissolved in the solvent
b. Solvent – the liquid substance that makes up the bulk of the solution.
Table 1.Types and Examples of Solutions
Type of Solution Example Solvent Solute
Solid in Solid Steel Iron (Solid) Carbon(Solid)
Liquid in Solid Dental Amalgam Silver (Solid) Mercury (Liquid)
Liquid in Liquid Vinegar Water (Liquid) Acetic Acid (Liquid)
Gas in Liquid Carbonated Water Water (Liquid) Carbon Dioxide (Gas)
Gas in Gas air Nitrogen (Gas) Oxygen (Gas)

II. LEARNING EXPERIENCE

LAB SAFETY: Be careful when handling the materials.

a. Laboratory Activity/Cooperative Learning

Note: Fill in the POE-chart before (Predict), during (Observe) and after (Explain) the activity.
Problem: What will happen when you mix a sample solid or liquid in a given volume of water?

PREDICT OBSERVE EXPLAIN

MATERIALS
2 tablespoons each of the following:
6 cups water sugar, salt, mongo seeds,
6 pieces, teaspoons powdered juice, cooking oil, vinegar
Old white T-shirt 12 clear bottles or cups

PROCEDURE:
1. Predict which among the given samples will dissolve in water. Write your predictions in Column 2 of
Table 1.
2. Put one cup of water in each of the cups.
3. Add ½ teaspoon of each of the six samples. Use the teaspoon to dissolve
as much of each sample as possible. Use a different teaspoon for each
of the cups.
4. Describe the mixture that resulted after mixing. Write your answer in column 3.
5. Then, filter the mixture using the old white tshirt.
6. Write your observations in the data table.
