Math 8

Superhero Transformation Project

Goal: With a partner, create a comic book of a brand new superhero!! Your superhero will save
the world by navigating past obstacle courses to conquer arch enemies along the way.

Role: Comic Book Designer (This is you and your partner!)

Audience: Marvel Comics Development Staff (a.k.a. Your Math teacher )

Situation: You are in charge of creating a new superhero and creating a comic book to pose to
sell to the Marvel Comics Development Staff. This new superhero MUST use Transformations to
help defeat the evil in the world. The development staff wants you to show how your
superhero can navigate two different obstacle courses using only combinations of
transformations – reflection, rotations, and translations, to reach their ultimate goal.

Performance: The Development staff would like to see a well-planned, organized, and
creative/colorful comic book describing your epic tale, along with mathematical accuracy of all
transformations on the given coordinate graphs of the path your Superhero has to take.
Creating your Superhero Tale – A Step by Step Guide
1. Choose a name for your super hero! Be creative and appropriate 

2. Choose names for your super hero’s evil nemesis or villains.

3. Create a story line.

For example: the evil nemesis is hiding all the rulers at Robert Frost Middle School and
the super hero wants to get them back because they need to use these rulers for their
final exam! (This story line is just an example, you may NOT use this specific storyline,
be creative. It also does not have to relate to mathematics.)

4. What does your super hero look like? Draw your superhero in this square. You will be using
this picture with all transformations so draw something that you can easily produce multiple
times within this comic book!

This image will be located on the coordinate plane:

Starting Locations:
A (-11, 16)
B (-8, 16)
C (-8, 13)
D (-11,13)

5. Comic Book:
a) Page 1 Create a Cover for your Comic Book
Be creative with your cover and make it stand out so someone would want to buy your comic!
 Cover should include: Title, Picture/Drawing, Authors Names, Teachers Name as well as Class Period.

b) Page 2 – Leave Blank (This is the back of page 1)

(if time permits you can include an all about the authors)

c) Page 3 – Create a story line of your Super Hero’s mission which must include who your
superhero has to defeat and why. This should consist of at least 10 sentences. Be
creative with your mission as well as keep the mission appropriate to school standards.
d) Page 4 – Work with your partner and come up with a sequence of transformations that
can get your Super Hero from Start to Finish in each coordinate grid given. Below you will
find specific directions for these transformations:

Obstacle Course: Draw your super hero at the start in the given square ABCD. Your
mission is to move it to the ending square using the following rules:

a) You cannot perform the same transformation twice in a row.

Good Example – Trans, Rot, Ref, Rot, Trans, Rot

Bad Example – Trans, Rot, Ref, Trans, Trans, Rot, Rot

b) When rotating use the rotations rules about the origin. When reflecting your
superhero square, you may use any line of your choosing which also includes the x and y
axis.

c) Your superhero must land in each of the four quadrants. So you must use at least
three transformations in each obstacle.

d) Make sure to use the correct prime notations on all new superhero images (your
square)

e) You must avoid all obstacles – you cannot touch any of the shapes placed on the
course. You cannot slide through an obstacle. You can only flip or rotate over them.

e) Page 5 – For each transformation created on the obstacle course you must describe a
realistic scenario that corresponds to your plot line. The list of transformations must be
in order and with full details in descriptions. Make sure to include what transformation
was used and list the new coordinates.

f) Page 6- Repeat Directions from Page 4

g) Page 7- Repeat Directions from Page 5

h) Page 8- Complete the given task of dilating your superhero image with the directions
given.

i) Page 9- Create an ending/conclusion to your comic book writing at least 5 sentences.

If you have any questions regarding rules of transformations refer to your notes from the
previous unit. In addition, make sure your transformations are accurate to receive full credit as
well as adding your own spark of creativity.

Effort should be put in by both partners so plan who is in charge of what portion of the comic
book in advance. You and your partner will receive the same grade for this project.

Refer to the Model Projects as guides; HOWEVER you may not use these same examples for
your own project. If used, you will receive NO credit for this assignment.
