2) Issues:
• Today it is difficult to deny the advantages of the Internet, e.g. flexibility in terms of
schedule of use; speedy access to information; and accessibility at a distance to various
partners and resources for learning and teaching activities.
• In recent years, many of those involved in education have changed their practices, e.g.
relationship to knowledge, professional development, means of communication, and
learning activities, because of the emergence of information and communication
technologies (ICTs).
• Some teachers feel at a loss when it comes to these changes. They would like to have
access to resources that give them a better idea of how to experiment with new
approaches so that ICT use becomes part of their everyday routine.

3) Objectives:
• Support collaboration between parents, the school and the community.
• Foster communication between the academic world and communities of practice.
• Encourage professional development in education and experimentation with new
instructional practices.
• Facilitate ICT use in school.

7) Description:
• ÉduTIC is a portal created by Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) for enabling
users to address and delve into education issues in depth through 14 theme-based
sections. (Note: The Parents, milieux éducatifs et communauté component is covered in
this factsheet.)
• This site provides education stakeholders and the public at large with rich, diversified
and up-to-date material. The content was developed by well-known professors in
collaboration with the education community. ÉduTIC has also proven to be an invaluable
instructional tool for students (college and university), a professional upgrading
instrument for educators, and a source of information for anyone interested in
education.
• The Parents, milieux éducatifs et communauté component is a tool created to bolster
collaboration between parents, the school and the community, while fostering ICT
integration. This component is part of a vision that is ecological, 1 holistic and
interdisciplinary. The information it contains has practical applications based on the
concept of empowerment. The main goal of the section is to change the attitudes and
practices of the various partners involved in children’s success in school. Parents,
educators and the community have access to communication tools, strategies and
concepts for better communication through ICTs.

8) Steps:
• There are no specific steps in ÉduTIC. By surfing ÉduTIC, users can think about their role
as educators, acquire further knowledge and try new ICT-related partnership practices.
Users are free to go at their own pace.

9) Activities/Actions:
• The authors and designers of ÉduTIC have spared no efforts to present the information
as dynamically as possible. More specifically, users have access to reference material,
role-playing material, videos, questionnaires, etc.
• A number of sub-themes are covered in the Parents, milieux éducatifs et
communauté section. The following is an overview of the content:
o Communication between parents, educational milieus and the community:
Concrete examples of use of the Internet to prop up relations between schools and
the family, in addition to tools to get users thinking about partnerships, effective
communication techniques, and strategies for developing collaboration and
empowerment
o Parenting roles: Using Dunst’s 12 principles, explanations for educators of how to
shape their practices in support of the role of parents. Theoretical and practical
explanations of children’s psychological development, parent guidance and
communication with families with severe problems. Three questionnaires for
parents to assess their family’s practices, the assistance they receive from school
and community workers, and their perception of their power to act. Lastly, food for
thought on today’s concept of the family
o Community: A list of websites on the services offered to the community
o Support for school and community workers: A section devoted specifically to
school and community workers. Presentation of the main concepts of

empowerment-based action, advice about moderating parenting support meetings,
an action program, and think-tank tools

• Users:
o surf the site for partnership- and ICT-related information, tools and strategies;
o take stock of their daily practices and pinpoint the things that could be improved;
o try out new communication practices and change some of their attitudes in order to
promote the academic success of the children they work with.

12) Scientific Basis or Validity:


• ÉduTIC was produced by a team of 44 UQTR professors and teaching assistants from
10 different departments (arts, social communication, French, modern languages,
mathematics and computer science, psychology, education, administration, physical
activity and the humanities).
• In 2003, ÉduTIC already boasted 1000 hits a months from French-speaking countries.
Statistics show that the site has been gaining in popularity every year. For example, in
2005, the number of hits was 30,219, and in 2009, there were 54,547 hits.
• When ÉduTIC was launched, UQTR students were polled on their first impression of the
site, its user-friendliness, its content and the quality of its information. The overall
score was 3.6 on 4. In 2010, many students said that the site continued to be an
enriching source of content in the field of education.
