SCHOOL
D ear Friends, what a journey it has
been! We graduated decades ago,
wandered off to distances far and wide,
only to be pulled back together through
an incredible chain of events! All of us,
proud Michaelities of the same batch,
amazingly find ourselves huddled to-
gether once again, inside our whatsapp
group.
And now, we’re all destined to meet with
each other in this planned get-together
in New Delhi. Many amongst Anubhav,
Shashank, Kumar Vishal, Bongo, Faiz,
Rajesh Goyal, Rajesh Prasad, Ashutosh,
Vivek, Rishi, Manish and I are flying from
the US, to party with our closest friends
of this lifetime. Who could have dreamt
such an exciting homecoming! Organiz-
ing this event at such a grand level has
needed a planning spanning one entire
year. And a whatsapp!
Our whatsapp journey has been guided
by the rock-solid leadership provided by
our worthy administrators, Pramod and
Rocky, and has also meandered through
experiments with other similar apps,
namely the hike, and the telegram. Now
with video chat facilities, we can hope to
be able to have group video conferences
as well, such social connectivity
undoubtedly facilitated by the
technological advancements during the
fortunate times that we live in.
Within the spirited whatsapp group, we
are sharing fun and experiences, joys
and sorrows, cracking jokes, and engag-
ing with great seriousness on all social
and political occurrences of the day.
We are wiser than ever before, having
endured distinct unwinding experiences
of life. Still, wondering whether all of us
are growing older, or getting younger by
the day!

Dear Friends, as Michaelites of the same
batch, there is an immediate sense of
belonging. There is humour and
 leg-pulling. Cheers and a few boos. There are songs and
ghazals. And some serious discussions on financial and
legal matters. There are hardly any rules. Participation
is lively.
We are spending several wasteful hours, discussing all
topics under the sun with utmost zeal, with no expect-
ed outcomes. While some amongst us are incessantly
arguing on topics mischievously brought up a while
ago, by someone who is now nowhere to be seen, others
seem to have just been awakened, finding some sudden
interest in the ongoing. Yet others, deeply offended by
some of the comments, have just unlocked the door and
have chosen to venture out for a little while, only to be
repeatedly dragged back inside by our admin.
Is this an exercise to rediscover each other? Or to under-
stand a bit more about ourselves, through the lenses of
our closest friends, who would not hesitate to say it as it
is?
Dear Friends, the group is sufficiently lit up and com-
fortably warmed up. It is locked from within, and there
is a distinguished seat for everyone. Quitting does not
appear to be an option. The ties that bind us together

are stronger than those that bother.
Some are uttering some choicest words to keep them-
selves calm. To a tuned ear, these words sound sweeter
than honey. If it helps, give yourselves the same choice.
If the weather so requires, the recommendation is to go
into a mild hibernation. Things are often seen in black
and white but we are all shades of gray. Emojis are avail-
able aplenty to help diffuse tensions. In times of crisis,
we are standing shoulder to shoulder with each other.
We have the richest array of experience and wisdom, and
guidance and help is never more than just a call away.
Dear Friends, as I travel from San Francisco to meet all
of you for this get-together in New Delhi, it gives me
great pleasure to report that things are looking good.
All absurdities and profanities are alive. The kicking and
screaming is all natural. The scene is chaotic. Everything
is as expected.
Ever so often, we find ourselves getting thrown off our
chairs through pleasant surprises that seem to catch us
off-guard. While Pramod’s immaculate writing prowess
is demonstrated through sudden outbursts of anger, we
have discovered a statistician in Brillianto, an unforgiv-
ing Manish, a never-say-die Deepak, not to mention our
romantic shayar in Rajesh Kataruka,. Fortunately, we
have a peacemaker. Rohit only speaks the language of
love.
News of personal successes and accomplishments of kids
bring great joy and pride. Rahul’s son Ramyak is excel-
ling in Purdue, Nikhil’s son Jay is pursuing his dreams
in Cambridge, Maskara’s daughter Shreya is a star in
UCLA, and so is Tantia’s son, Vidish. Sujoy, Samyak,
Dhruv, Satya, Chetan, Anubhav, KV, Bongo, Deepak and
others are all blessed with future stalwarts, ready to lead
us into the future. Pramod’s son, Anumod, is taking on
the world with his karate skills. Did someone say “Great
combo – talented chotu, supportive dad and connected
cha-chas”. Wait until his Mom reads it.

Samyak just shared an old snap and an anecdote. Oh,

there are too many messages today. The app does not
allow me to maintain bookmarks. I better go back to the
last message that I posted. Wasn’t that right after the
Sunny Leone movie clip?

Hello again! The Admin is shouting. His wife just kicked

him in bed! I warned you buddy. And now his phone is
no longer in reach… I am hoping it is getting charged. I
better bid adieu, too.

Get a good sleep, my friend. Wake up early. Get well

soon. Recover soon. And get back on your journey. Stay

 “Tempus Fugit”. Life moves so
fast. It’s almost 27 years and I still
get nostalgic when I think about

stop never used to get a seat (forget
about “window seat”) as the Kan-
karbagh crowd used to fill them up.
OF The “last row” and “hanging on
door” were revered and reserved

of eating tiffin before lunch break
in back row. Samayak’s Debonair
making the rounds in the last row
while the teacher was busy teach-
ing. There are so many but one
many would not know about is a
pool side party incidence.
I always looked forward to our
annual class pool side party, even
though I did not know swimming.
I still vividly remember enjoying
one such pool side party. Being
young and dumb, I used the pipe
on the side of the pool to go on the
deep side. One of my class mate
jumped near me and somehow I
lost my grip on the pipe. I started
drowning and grasping for breath.
I started drinking water and a
sensation of darkness started to
black me out. In panic there was
an uncontrollable movement of my
arms and legs. It was the first time,
I felt that I was going to die. Lucki-
ly for me another classmate pulled
me out and laid on the side of pool,
pumped the water out of me. I am
still looking for the two guys. One
who put me in near death situation
and the other who saved me.

Two adages come into my mind when I go down

memory lane and remember your wonderful batch of
Michaelites...Aaah! Michaelites: my co-alumni and
my dear, dear students. First, “ It’s the attitude of
humble gratitude with determination that will take
you to your altitude.” and the second one is some-
thing that has become a sort of an oft-repeated cliche,
as far as I am concerned! “ More than any other
batch (all the batches have showered a lot of love and
respect on me and consequently, on my family too), it

WITH LOVE is this one that has kept “making me feel better and
‘greater’ than what I was, what I am and what I will

be!” And I have my reason to feel so and say so....

Let’s go back...Down Memory Lane....1987-88 when

you guys were in Grade XI....and came August 1988
and I left all of you a bit in the lurch looking for ,what
,I then thought, were greener pastures. I left Mike’s
quite all of a sudden and headed for Sainik School
Tilaiya....All of you arranged a cute little farewell for
me and sang that very sweet Kumar Sanu-Anuradha
duet from the movie “Sir” ! And, only three months
later, I found out that at that point of time trying to
live out of St. Michael’s was for me like a fish trying to
live out of water! I came back to Mike’s in November
the same year....One of the biggest mentors of my life,
Fr PT AUGUSTINE, accepted me and did his best to
convince his board that I had not suddenly become an
‘untouchable’. I know it was hard for him...but that’s
another story....Coming back like this is never easy
and my heart fills with gratitude to each one of you
that , like my boss and your Principal, Fr Augustine,
each one of you made the return of the ‘prodigal son’
to the haloed portals of St. Michael’s as smooth and
as respectfully smooth as possible. Not a single one of
you, my dear students, gave me a cynical or a sar-
castic questioning look. On every face was the smile
of welcome and happiness that your English teacher
had returned.....There would be more of language
and literature , along with Gavaskar and Vishwanath
and Amarnath and Sanjeev Kumar and Sabatini and
Kishore Kumar , and , not to forget....Y-O-G-A !
But Destiny , also called Fr. PT Augustine, had other
plans for me and very soon afterwards I left you again
in the lurch, as it were, and headed for Plymouth, En-
gland for the CBSE-ELT Syllabus Designing, Text Book
Writing and Advanced Teacher Development Training
Programme....and again, you said ‘Bye-bye’ to me with
smiles that indicated you were happy for me and you
were proud of the fact that your English (and Cricket/
Tennis/Bollywood teacher too!) teacher was one of the
18 teachers of English to be selected from the country
for the ELT Project by CBSE and the British Council!
YOU have taught me the value of Gratitude even to-
wards people who did try a wee bit for you but couldn’t
do much for you! For people in the previous sentence,
please read ‘amber banerjee’

“AN ODE TO THE HILL
As you walked down from the point
the school bus dropped you to the
class, there were many things to
admire. The stately school building,
the forbidding administrative area
with the principal’s offices, a long
corridor flanked by with gardens on
one side, and a tomb with whispers
and rumours swirling around it to
catch a young kid’s fancy. But what
hit the imagination the most was the
Hill on the right of our first class. For
a young third grader, particularly
for one who was perpetually out
of breath, this was a mini adven-
ture to savour. I spent many breaks
panting to the top and admiring the
river Ganges that flowed beyond the
school’s boundary wall. Each climb
provided a sense of achievement.
Stories about the Hill abounded,
maybe it was formed during a flood,
but I never really new.
There was much to look forward the Hill and the ephemeral scaling
to in school – the classes, curric- of the peak it symbolised will remain
ulum, teachers, infrastructure, forever. “
all were top class for the times.
But even as the years progressed - Manish Kumar (Tutu)
and the school became easier as

students, it was emblematic of
our life at St Michaels, the ups

I had very typical middle class
upbringing wherein we had ev-
erything but there was no luxury. I
have been in the social development
sector all my working life by choice.
When I think or trace back as to
why, it takes me back to an expe-
rience which happened with me in
class 10th, in December of 1986. In
10 ‘B’, Mary Macdonald our class
teacher had asked us to collect old
newspaper/ clothes / old blankets
which she intended to give to a few
poor people who lived near to our
school. I had tagged along to be part
of the distribution process in the
slum area.
In the slum I spent nearly the whole
day getting to know these families
primarily of rickshaw pullers, maid
servants. For the first time I was
hearing on the first hand basis what
income poverty meant. Translat-
ed, the family narrated that they
bought cooking oil for Rs 2 every
day, which I couldn’t understand.
This was a new world of people,
experiences and reality which I
didn’t know or understand but
intrigued me a lot. This expe-

I t’s been few days since I returned from the reunion at
Manesar and still going through all the emotional mo-
ments and memories that we had at the reunion. I am
The Lessons
overwhelmed by the support and kindness of all of you, who
called , texted me and inquired about my well being. Many of Life in
of you suggested to put it in writing ( for e-scan) the experi-
ence I shared with you all in the reunion.
St. Michael’s
Initially, I thought it was very personal and since I got very
emotional in the reunion I shared my experience with you
all during the reunion. Later I realized, there is nothing
personal in our group, and this is our extended family. You
shouldn’t hesitate in sharing your struggle, happiness and
sadness within family.

Most of you have started your St. Michael’s journey in

Grade 3 but my journey with the school started in spring
of 1984 in 8th Grade, section D. I immediately fell in love
with the school. I was in total awe of its huge campus, big
classroom, large pools of buses and various facilities. I was
soon able to gel with my section mates , its academic envi-

ronment and quickly made friends with other section too.

Unfortunately, I soon realized that school had a “division”

 or a sense of “class” within it. The students were
treated differently based on the medium of in-
structions and this was not limited to the class
but many times on the fields too. The silver lining
was that the division was not among the students,
we were all the same.
Our batch was the first batch of the school to en-
roll into CBSE curriculum, a change from ICSE or
Bihar Board (for D section). This provided oppor-
tunity for us to get into mainstream academic en-

be taught in English medium for all the sections.
This became a big challenge for both students
and the teachers . I still couldn’t understand,
why we had different set of teachers when medi-
um of instructions and syllabus were same. Due
to all of these the students were getting stressed
out and it became classic case of survival of the
fittest, as our class strength decreased by 50% (By
10th CBSE Board) of what it was in the 8th grade.

It also taught us to overcome different constraints
and avail the opportunity given to us. Rahul
Yadav took the challenge head-on and wrote even
arts subjects (History, Geography) in English in
the 10th board, even though those subjects were
taught in Hindi. It was not a surprise for me that
he has made a name for himself, in-spite of going
through different challenge in his life. His fight-
ing ability and instincts were rooted in the school
days.
Those who successfully completed the 10th, could
not have completed without the support of close
friends and peers from other sections, who shared
notes, books and provided encouragement to
them.
When I got into +2 (Science -Bio) it was a differ-
ent school for me. I was among the equals and it
gave me opportunity to get into the real St. Mi-
chael’s. The academic environment, fun-loving
friends, eagerness to help and protect each other
were its hallmark . [Remember, the Kakolat trip
and bus’s seat incident :) ] I still recollect many
of you solving and sharing problems of Agarw-
al Classes (IIT JEE) in the corridors and fields
in front of our class room. That kind of support,
encouragement and motivation helped me to
achieve whatever I am today. As many of you
rightly said, it is we, the students, who made our
school great.
Though I have a B.Tech (CS) degree from REC/
NIT Kurukshetra and MBA from California, but
what I learnt and experienced in St. Michael’s
outdoes all. When I look back, I can proudly say
that my 5 years of St.Michael’s were the best
years of my life. This gave me the love, support
and strength to overcome various challenges very
early in the life.
Few years back when our 25th year reunion was
planned in 2012, I was looking forward to meet
many of you. I was ready to fly and cross over
Atlantic to join you guys for our reunion, but I
couldn’t take a step forward. My heart was strug-
gling to pump blood and I was immediately ad-
mitted to hospital with 99% blockage in my heart.
As a father of young child, I felt helplessness as I
didn’t know whom to ask for support.
I still remember, I was on phone with Rajiv Singh,
almost in tears, and told him how much I missed
the reunion. He promised me that there will be
another one very soon and I will be fine and at-
tend. Thanks Rajiv and all the organizers for this
Manesar’s reunion. It was MY reunion and thank
you doston for coming and giving me lots of love,
affection and hugs. Could someone tell the lyri-
cist that “Har Dost Supportive Hota Hai” and not
what he wrote for the song few years back.
Last but not the least, please remember “Jindgai
Na Mile Dubara”. Please take care of your health,
family and of-course friends, everything else will
fall in its place. Looking forward to meet you,

ther PT Augustine and the school buildings as props. All
of us confident and brimming with energy, not sure where
life will take but ready to take on the world.

School built our values, casteless thinking and great

camaraderie! The merging of sections in class 9th was a
boon in disguise, it broke section silos & created a batch
community.

er screen, thinking hard as to what I could consider an

enduring memory of my school days, I remain stupefied,
unable to type any word. Not so because middle ages
seems to have caught up with me, or because my self-pro-

claimed eidetic memory is now failing me, but because of
the overwhelming thoughts and emotion which suddenly
seemed to have dwelled up .

What could I consider an enduring memory? The little

academic achievements? Naah! The one-act plays and
the debates in which I got to participate and the tenure OF
St. Michael’s
as an editor of Scan? May be, they were quite sweet .The
cuts of Ms. B Kaur and sticks of Pandey ji. Aah!, they were
quite painful at that time especially the diktat, “Toyega
toyega, ek bar toyega to char bar maroonga .” But what I
now remember of them and recount to my children with a
nostalgic humour, are the enduring Pandeyisms ; (a)Naak
mein Bhainsa thoos doonga (b)Paet se kabootar nikal
doonga (c)Maar ke kala bhoot bana doonga etc.

Of course the cupboard ‘Debonair’ incident , the vanishing
watch-glasses from the chemistry labs, the ‘treatment’ of
Mr. Jose , the youthful appreciation ‘showered’ on a very
popular lady teacher , my friends teasing me for the female
roles that I had to essay, all bring a smirk on my face .
I realize that besides the balanced and enriching
education which the years of schooling imparted me
, what I gained most of them , was enduring friend-
ships. The Giddha bhoj best exemplifies it.
In the standards 11th and 12th, the tiffin time an-
tics of the feared gang of four was referred to as the
Giddha bhoj. Any morsel of food in the vicinity of ten
yards was not safe if the gang was near. Either you
hurriedly devour it, gently and unnoticed clear from
this radius or succumb to the snatch and fly away
tactics of this group. Our friend Manish Kumar (Tutu)
an unfortunate and repeated victim, one day, out of
sheer frustration christened the gang and its antics
as Gidhha Bhoj. I reckon he was the easiest and the
dearest prey.
Who were the members of this dubious gang? Manish
Sinha, Prateek Sabharwal, Gokula Nand Pandey and
yours truly. But how come the seemingly gentle souls
who would not harm even a fly, transformed into this
daring gang. Well, the hyenas and jackals of the batch,
who would not spare their tiffin, taught them the les-
son about survival of the fittest.
The modus operandi of this gang was simple; ap-
proach the potential prey, engage him in a conversa-
tion, snatch whatever you could from his tiffin box,
devour it before the victim reacts and scoot. The best
among us was Manish Sinha whose relatively long
arms often reminded the victim about the proverbial
‘kanoon ke haanth’ of Hindi movies. He had success-
fully mastered the art of snatching the morsel about to
land even in the victim’s jaws. He was a true perfec-
tionist.
But was the gang never itself a victim? Oh yes! Indeed
it was . However, it had devised a strategy to mini-
mize the losses in case it was invaded by the bigger
and brutish gang of jackals. My tiffin would first be
offered as propitiation. Its content was well known,
bread with a wafer thin layer of jam and an omelet. As
the jackals would pounce and snatch it, the contents
would be rendered a uniform admixture of a sweet and
salty substance. We called it plasma. By the time the
jackals would feast on it, the gang would have scooted
to a safe distance.
And then would be opened the first tiffin, that of Man-
ish Sinha. This would contain a variety of sandwiches
and nick knacks. Next would be the rainbow sand-
wiches of Prateek Sabharwal, delicious and neat.
But alas, the group would have satiety only when
Golghar was opened, the round large stain-
less-steel tiffin box of Gokula Nand Pandey . Four
sumptuous desi ghee paranthas with aloo-gobhi
or aloo-matar bhujiyas, with an occasional dollop
of mango-pickle ,would be wrapped in pages of
promotional material of Elite course of Brilliant
Tutorials. Boy! It was a feast time for us. We often
wondered why aunty was so generous with Goku-
la’s tiffin. His answer was simple, “Maa ko bolte
hain ki tiffin time tak bahut bhookh lag jata hai.
Teen parantha se nahi kaam chalta “.

Well, what about the pages of Brilliant Tutorial

promotional material? How did our dear Gokula
have a perennial supply of them? A brilliant and
an innovative answer, “Whenever the promo-
tional material is about to end, I send them a post
card (of 15 paise) evincing my interest in their
course and they send a thick wad of pages . “
We grew up on Gokula’s tiffin.

MIRROR
E very morning, I wake up and see a mirror. Every
morning, the mirror sees me.
If I think about it, my mirror has witnessed liter-
ally every emotion I have ever felt. It has seen me
at my ugliest- angry, crying or just plain sleepy. It
has seen me at my best- laughing, jumping or even
dancing for no apparent reason. My mirror has
lived my life along with me.
I wondered, once, what if it could think. My mirror
has seen me as a tiny 7 year old, who had to lean
on the sink, even to see her face. It has seen me as
the teenager who believed that the bathroom is
the best and only place made for one to cry. It sees
me practice speeches before an event or, when I
was younger, practice those dance moves I wished I
could do.
My mirror sees the “me” I may not show the world.
It never has, nor can, judge me.
Once, I met (I say met because, the aforemen-
tioned points make the mirror sound like more
of a person) a mirror. It was in a school founded
over a hundred years ago. That mirror was put on
the same wall when the school was established.
The walls changed, the doors changed, teachers,
students, batches, everything changed. But, for a
century, that mirror stayed where it was. How many
teachers would have corrected their reflections
before that mirror, how many students would have
hastily checked if they looked presentable? That
mirror is the sole witness to every single thing
that happened in that corridor for a century. That
fascinates me. It makes the mirror like a piece of
history. A book you know holds great information,
but one you cannot read.
This aura, mystery and yet, honesty of a mirror is
something that will never cease to fascinate me.
How many things do we find that are, by their very
nature, perfectly honest, even brutally so?
Your mirror is that illusion that does not illude you.
It is that witness that does not judge you. You just
look at it and…it looks right back.
