Introduction

Established in 1989 Wrexham Mineral Cables developed a totally

new and unique process for the continuous manuafcture of Mineral
Insulated Cables - the only True Fire Survival Cable.

The specially designed equipment is housed in 3700 square metres

of purpose built factory located in Ruabon, Wrexham, North Wales.

The quality and reliability of Wrexham Mineral Cables is recognised

world wide and throughout the electrical industry. Manufactured to
meet British and European standards the product range has
endorsements & certifications from many regulatory bodies
including BRE-LPCB, BASEC, Warrington Fire Research Centre,
London Underground for cables and SIRA for terminations.

Wrexham Mineral Cables has also manufactured for the Australian,

Canadian and American markets and has a UL listing.

Some of the many standards and approvals for which we hold certificates:
ISO 9001:2008 BS EN 5839-1:2002 CLAUSE 26.2ENHANCED
BS EN 60702-1:2002 [WAS BS 6207] BS EN 50200:2006 CLASS PH120

Why Mineral? • Nuclear reactors

• Air pressurisation systems for stairwells
• Hospital operating rooms
Mineral Insulated Cable is totally Inorganic
and Silicone free in construction. The main • Fire alarm systems
construction consists of copper conductors • Emergency power systems
(cores), highly compressed magnesium oxide • Emergency lighting systems
(insulation) and a copper sheath. This unique
construction gives melting points of 1083˚C
• Sprinkler systems
and 2800˚C for the copper and insulation • Temperature measurement devices; RTD’s, thermocouples
repectively. This provides fire survival whilst • Critical process valves - petrochemical industry
continuing to carry a load in temperatures in • Public buildings e.g. theatres, cinemas, hotels, schools
excess of 1000˚C.
• Transport hubs - railway stations, airports etc.
Mineral Insulated Cables are used to provide • Tunnels and mines
circuit integrity for power and control circuits
of critical equipment such as:
• Areas where flammable gases may be present
• Areas where corrosive chemicals may be present
• Building plant rooms
• Power stations, foundries
• Close to or inside industrial foundries, kilns and ovens

Product Profile

Copper conductors (Cu-ETP-2) embedded in compressed

Magnesium Oxide insulation (MgO) with a copper outer
sheath (Cu-DHP)
This unique composition ensures our cable can withstand temperatures in excess of 1000˚C and still operate at its rated
voltage. This impressive performance can add vital time to escape a fire and makes it ideal for use in large developments
such as hospitals, malls, airports, schools, underground rail systems and factories which house large numbers of people.

Fire Resistant High Mechanical Strength

Will neither burn nor support combustion. One of the key features of our mineral cables is it’s ablility to withstand
considerable stresses such as bending, twisting and flattening.
High Operation Temperatures
Continuous operating temperature up to 250˚C and for shorter periods Earth Continuity
up to 1083˚C, the melting point of copper. Our cables do not require a separate earth continuity conductor as
the outer copper sheath serves this purpose providing excellent low
Inherent Flameproof Barrier resistance earth continuity.
With a non-flammable copper sheath the highly compacted
insulation will resist the transmission of vapours, gases and flames Pliable
between items of equipment connected by the cable. Mineral insulated cable is fully annealed and consequently extremely
ductile and easily manipulated to follow existing wiring routes and
Non-Ageing irregular shapes.
Mineral insulated cable is permanent and does not weaken or
degrade with age offering longer and safer life spans. Small Overall Diameter
Our cables have a smaller diameter
Air tight than soft skinned fire resistant cables
Impervious to water, oil and gas. of equivalent ratings.

Product Testing
We have our own purpose built test lab where we continually
test our products against soft skinned fire resistant cables. Both
cables are tested simultaneously under the same conditions.

AT 30 SECONDS

When a flame is introduced the outer LSF cover burns away

on both cables.

AT 3 MINUTES

The mineral cable now has the bare copper sheath exposed
and the fire resistant cable is exposing it’s inner cores. At this
point we introduce the impact test where both cables are
directly struck by a flat, free fall bar at timed intervals. The fire
resistant cables generally fail on the first impact while our
mineral cables are able to withstand constant impact at the
same point for over 1000 strikes without circuit failure and while
still exposed to a flame.

AT 4 MINUTES

The flame is now removed. The fire resistant cable has failed
circuit integrity and all critical circuits are now dead.
Alarmingly, all fire resistant cables tested continue to burn
once the flame is removed which would help sustain and
spread fire. Our Mineral cables will not support fire as the
solid copper sheath and mineral insulation are non flammable
thus continuing to protect all critical circuits.
