Pre-assessment and Findings:

Based on all pre-assessment and findings, we know that the children have an interest in baking
bread but are not fully aware of the process in which bread is made. We also found that all the children
know what bread is, but they do not know what yeast is or what it’s role is in the bread making process.
Therefore, we know that the children like bread, are interested in bread, and need to know more about
making bread. I was able to conclude these thoughts after observing and pre-assessing ten children on
bread and the process of making bread.
After asking Angela if she has ever made bread before she responded by saying “I’ve never
made bread, but I like to eat bread”. After asking this same question to Ella during snack, she responded
by saying “No. It would be fun”. This statement helps me conclude that she has never made it before, but
is interested in learning how to. I also asked the same question to Eva and she responded by saying “We
buy bread”. This response helped me realize that most of the children probably do not make bread, but
they know that their parents buy it at the store. At the snack table I was also able to ask Jessica and Will
if they enjoy cooking or baking. Jessica responded by saying “I like to cook”. I also asked if she had ever
made bread and she responded by saying “I don’t know how to make it”. Will responded by saying “I
don’t know how”. After asking Tyson what kind of bread he liked he responded by saying “I like the kind
of peanut butter and jelly”.
While observing children pretending to cook and play house in the dramatic play center I learned
that a few of them understood some processes of cooking and baking, but they did not fully understand
the entire process. In this center, I asked Dan and Kyle if they have knew what you use to make bread.
Both boys responded by saying “I don’t know”.
While observing children at the science center I noticed that Carter and Brock enjoyed playing
with the magnets. This showed me that they enjoy activities with cause and effect. This will help them be
interested in the process of making bread since they will be curious what happens when you add yeast, or
what happens when you put the dough in the oven.
I plan to teach the skills and concepts that the children are not fully aware of by using my ITBE’s
in my gathering time, small group, and self-selected activities. During gathering time, I will model the
process of making bread dough and explain what the ingredient yeast does. The children will also be
able to watch the reaction of yeast in water during small group so that they understand how it works.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Developmental Focus:

1. Bread is made by mixing ingredients to make dough.
2. Yeast makes bread dough rise.
3. Today the activities will have a focus on cause and effect to help the children learn what happens
when an action effects the result of something.
