2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

2.1 Support Steel

The installation contractor shall check all foundations, including levels, anchor bolt locations and
projections, etc., prior to commencement of the work. Any discrepancies shall be pointed out to the
Engineer for corrective action.

Conveyor steel may be placed either on prepared concrete foundations, existing support steel or new
support steel. New support steel shall be completely assembled and aligned before placing conveyor
steel, unless supports form an integral part of the conveyor structure, in which case they are to be
treated as part of the conveyor steel. Survey instruments shall be used to establish the correct top of
steel elevations. Measurements to existing floor or foundations are not permissible, except when tie-ins
to the existing structures are required in the design.

All locations and elevations shall be based on approved bench marks, unless otherwise noted on
drawings. When placing conveyor steel on existing concrete foundations or support steel, confirm
correct location and elevation of these supports.

2.2 Conveyor Steel

Conveyor steel shall first be assembled as a complete unit with connections sufficiently completed only
to support the structure. Alignment shall start after all components are in place. Conveyor head and tail
end work points are to be established by survey from an approved bench mark. Alignment and
installation shall be as per industry standards or as specified by the Engineer.

After alignment, all connections are to be completed, welds ground smooth, and painting is to be
touched up in accordance with project painting specifications.

2.3 Shaft Assemblies & Conveyor Idlers

When shaft assemblies and conveyor idlers have not been mounted on the support frames in the shop,
they can be put in place after completion of the conveyor steel. Shaft assemblies and idlers shall be
aligned as per industry standards or as specified by the Engineer.

2.4 Drive Assemblies

Drive assemblies shall be installed, checked, lubricated and test run as per Design Standard 2S-20.01.

2.5 Conveyor Chain & Conveyor Belt Installation

Belts and chains can be installed after shaft installation, idler alignment, grinding in the conveyor
troughs is completed and the conveyor troughs have been cleaned with a fire hose, or to the Engineer’s
satisfaction.

All take-ups shall be released or raised as much as possible and all slack taken out of belt or chains.
Special attention has to be paid to the correct orientation of rib-top belts, chain and flights and to correct
spacing and alignment of flights. Belt splices shall be hot vulcanized. Chain wipers and belt scrapers
and cleaners shall be aligned immediately after the installation of the conveyor belt or chain.

2.5 Completion of Installation & Test Run

Before the conveyor can be test run, the installation has to be completed. This includes installation of
removable sections, adjustment of skirt boards (skirt board rubber adjusted on the run), etc. and the
installation of drive and other protective guards. All welding rods, slag and other debris are to be
cleaned off conveyor troughs and belts. Conveyor chains and trough shall be lubricated with water for
start-up and run in. During the test run, take-ups and idler and shaft alignment can be adjusted and
belts properly trained. After a conveyor has run without problems for at least 24 hours, all alignments
and bolts should be re-checked and readjusted or tightened if necessary and drives and bearing pillow
blocks secured with dowels or keeper bars.

Bearing pillow blocks shall be secured with keeper bars, unless they are provided with adjusting screws.
In this case, both adjusting screws shall be tightened up against the pillow block and secured with a jam
nut.

Drive bases, if installed on steel supports, shall be secured with keeper bars on four sides. Drive bases
on concrete pads and all other supports on concrete shall be grouted as per HAS specifications, prior to
test run.

Drive bases
on concrete pads and all other supports on concrete shall be grouted as per HAS specifications, prior to
test run.

For doweling, refer to HAS Design Standard 2S-20.01.
