ELDERLY IN CATARMAN, NORTHERN SAMAR
By:
GROUP I
April 2013
Problem:
The general problem is clearly stated in a declarative statement form. It is feasible, clear,
significant, and ethical. The problem statements are clearly identified by the researchers. The
authors evidently differentiated between the general and specific problems. The general problem
is stated in declarative statement form while the specific problems or sub-problems are stated in
interrogative or question form. The specific problems asked provided answers to the
general/main problem. The problem is practical in nature since the researchers aimed at finding
out the perception of family caregivers about the elderly in the municipality of Catarman,
Northern Samar.
The problem and its background are justifiably presented in the study. The study is
conducted with the purpose of establishing positive image of the elderly because they deserve
quality care and equal opportunities from the different members of the society. The researchers’
primary concern in this study is the quality of care that the caregivers are rendering to the elderly
and how the College of Nursing can help improve the quality care towards elderly. The
significance of the problem is convincing and realistic. The researchers supplied good details for
Purpose:
The purpose of the study is clearly and concisely stated. The researchers believed that the
findings of this study is significant to the elderly, family caregivers, nursing students, colleges of
nursing, local government unit and rural health unit. The study is made for a course requirement
The literature review is specific to the purpose of the study. It did not include a general
background material. The research study has ample of literature reviewed. Based upon the
bibliographies, the study includes books, professional journals and magazines, electronic sources
The researchers are nursing students who belong to the Chrysoprase 2013. They are
trying to evaluate the perception of family caregivers about the elderly to the prioritized 16 out of
the 55 barangays of Catarman, Northern. The study includes both current and older information.
The oldest literature used was published on 2002 and the most current literature used was
published on 2009.
Conceptualization:
In the conceptualization of plan authors are able to strive for objectivity of the study
because of well defined problems. The concepts of the authors are well defined stating what they
wish to do in their study. The concept is clearly understandable stating what to be studied.
Concepts of the study are relevant and do answer the general problem of the study.
The study show evidence of thorough planning using descriptive correlational survey
method to give full description of the respondent in all the statistical treatments based on
questionnaire. The study was original and was made in order to determine the perceptions of the
family caregivers about the elderly in Catarman, Northern Samar. All the steps or scientific
modified from Agus, ML study titled “Community Health Nurses and Family Members’
Perceptions of the Elderly in the Province of Northern Samar, Proposed Health Teaching
Plan”(1996). During the study, privacy had been observed for the protection of the rights of the
respondents.
Hypothesis:
The researchers state the hypothesis clearly formulating one hypothesis in the study. The
hypothesis is theoretically based; it is based on Madison (2002) theory of evaluation which has
five components adopting that of Shadish, Cook, and Leviton (2002) such as the theory of
knowledge, value, use social programming, and practice. The hypothesis states a relationship
between variables containing the demographic data of the respondents. The researchers are able
to identify the variables in determining the hypothesis. The hypothesis was defined in operational
term using Slovin’s formula. The question is clearly stated and does specify what the researcher
wishes to do. The question was worth of study to help improve the knowledge of those in nursing
profession of the needs in the community and how to effectively render care to the elderly
population. The question was stated in operational term and can be measured through
nonparametric test.
Methodology:
The researchers have defined the population specifically. The statistical test used is the
Slovin’s formula to establish if there was relationship between the demographic profile of the
family caregivers to their perceptions about elderky. The researchers did not report any biases in
The results of statistical test were represented correctly in tabular form. The findings and
the data were interpreted. Age and relationship with the elderly had no significant relationship
with perceptions of the family caregivers where as gender, educational attainment and length of
service had a significant relationship in terms of biologic aspect. The tables were setup correctly
and each contents and their description were consistent that makes them understandable.
Conclusions:
The conclusions are supported by the data concluding that the profiles of the respondents
did not have an effect to their care rendered to the elderly in terms of the psychosocial aspect of
the elderly. On the other hand, only educational attainment had an effect to the care rendered by
the family caregiver to the elderly in terms of the biologic aspect of the elderly. The conclusions
were stated clearly and concisely based from the data and tables presented.
Miscellaneous:
The identified strengths of the research study are: it has clear and simple title; the
problem is feasible, clear, significant and ethical; it has a well-defined introduction that is crucial
for the readers to easily understand the study; it has a good theoretical framework and a
conceptual framework as well. Good and understandable grammar was observed. The identified
weaknesses are: it lacks parts of methodology which is imperative in the development of the
