Teacher’s Guide
*** This is a guide to explain only those areas that are not self-explanatory.
The rest of the pages should be completed according to the directions on
the pages themselves.
Town: a compactly settled area usually larger than a village but smaller
than a city
Village: a settlement usually larger than a hamlet and smaller than a town
Continent: one of the great divisions of land (as North America, South
America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, or Antarctica) on the globe
All definitions are from Merriam Webster: Word Central found at www.wordcentral.com
1.
Color My World
After discussing the vocabulary words, have children color the Venn
diagram according to the instructions printed.
Key Points:
Each of the smaller areas lies within all of the areas larger than itself. A
city is in a county, a state, a country, AND a continent.
Each area IS COMPOSED OF (is made of) all of its smaller areas. A
continent is composed of countries, states, counties, and
cities/towns/villages.
Cities, towns, and villages are different because of their size and
population. Typically, each stands on its own as an entity (villages are not
in towns, towns are not in cities, etc…).
2.
Game: My World War!
It is recommended that you copy, cut out, and laminate the game
pieces for future use.
Color form: Use pieces as shown. Extra pieces will be available for $1
on my store’s site.
Whoever wins the most pairs after the five plays wins that round.
Allow students to play as many rounds as time permits.
3.
Tally of States Visited -- Group
After students have circled the states they have visited in RED and the next
five states they would like to visit in BLUE, have students either place their
own tallies on one master sheet, or ask for a show of hands for each state
and enter the tallies yourself (although the latter method may take a while
and may cause students to be more competitive). This tally sheet could be
used as a data form for students to create a informational visual aid
showing some or all of the following information: the top five most visited
states, the five least visited states, the difference between the most and
least visited states, etc…. Information may be represented in a variety of
forms including the following: bar graph, line graph, pie graph, table, chart,
etc…
Have students sign and number the tally on their own, or ask students
orally how many states they have visited. Keep in mind, that students may
feel more comfortable doing this in writing rather than out loud due to the
semi-competitive nature of this activity. Try to remind all of the students
that it doesn’t matter how many states they have visited, but that it is more
important for them to all actively seek knowledge about the world in which
they live. Encourage internet, personal, and book research of states and
regions of the world whenever possible (and in the safest of manners, of
course)! This tally form should also be used to help you answer the
question about the range, median, mode, and the average number
(arithmetic mean) of states visited by individual students.
4.
Data Analysis: States Visited Summary
Have students learn about and define the following vocabulary terms:
Range: the difference between the least and greatest of a set of values
(the range of a set of numbers being 6, 7, 8, 12, 9, and 4 is 6)
Mode: the most frequent value of a set of values (as data) (the mode of a
data set of 1, 2, 3, 5, 3, 7, 3, 3, 2, 1, 3, 6 is 3)
Use the information collected during the “States Visited” survey process to
answer the questions correctly. Information from the “Data Analysis:
States/Students” form can be used to help calculate answers for the range,
median, mode and average/arithmetic mean questions. The tally form can
My Trip to…
Have students write a short account of either a real or fictitious trip they
have taken to a specific state. Have them fill in the top blank with the state
about which they will be writing, and then have them write about their trip
their state using as many facts about that state as possible. Grades should
be based on grammar usage, creativity, and use of researched facts.
5.
Community Helper Interview Form
Visit and interview a community helper at a fire station, police station, post
office, city hall, etc… and have the students use the “Community Helper
Interview Form” to create their questions and record their answers. If a
field trip is not possible, perhaps a community helper could visit the
classroom and allow the students to conduct an interview with him or her.
Copy enough story templates so that each student can create his or her
own book. If possible, attach each child’s photograph inside the oval on
pg. 2 of his or her book. To begin with, work on this writing project together
until students are familiar with the format. Have students fill in the blanks
using the following options:
boy/girl
adjective (silly, adventurous, wild, etc… -- this should vary with each page)
child’s name
house/townhouse/apartment
city/town
county
state
country
continent
On the last two pages, students will also be asked to list the people with
whom they live and some of the activities they enjoy together.
