Lesson Plan 1

Lesson Plan 1: Multiplication: Area Model

Standard: CCSS: 3.NBT.A.3 Use place value understanding and properties of operations to
perform multi-digit arithmetic.

Content Objective: SWBAT multiply 2 digit numbers by using the area model method with
100% accuracy (which can be applied to finding the area of the rectangle in the future).
Language Objective: SWBAT orally define in their own words the definitions of place value,
partial product, and area accurately to a partner.
Vocabulary:
1. Area: The area of a flat, or plane figure is the number of unit squares that can be
contained within it.
2. Partial Product: The product of one term of a multiplicand and one term of its multiplier.
3. Place Value: The value of where the digit is in the number (tenths, ones, tens, hundreds,
etc.)

Assessment Statement: Students are able to multiply one and two digit numbers with 100%
accuracy.
Big Ideas: Multiplication of ten, Partial Products
Differentiated Instruction: Process – students who are struggling will work with the teacher for
further instruction until they feel comfortable to do it on their own while the other students break
up in pairs to work on individual problems on their own. Students who are easily multiplying one
and two digit numbers will be asked to multiply two two-digit numbers using the area model.
Materials: Base Ten Blocks, Whiteboards, Markers
Instruction:
 Ask how we can use manipulatives to find the area of a shape through multiplication
 Discuss place value and value of manipulatives (Large Cube-Thousands, Flat Square-
Hundreds...etc)
 Explain the area model and the strategy of partial products
 Do an example with a one-digit number multiplied by a two-digit number
 Do an example of two two-digit numbers being multiplied
 Do an example where they tell me what to do
 Break them into partners to practice a sheet of provided problems (if they feel ready)
 Early finishers will be asked to create problems of their own to practice
Conclusion: Come back together and discuss the Big Ideas
