Woman´s handicap:
Shashi is a woman who goes through great difficulties in society where he
lives, for being shy and did not speak English.

How does the family react to that handicap? Shashi, housewife, suffers
at the hands of her husband and daughter for not knowing how to speak
English. However, everything changes when her sister asks for help for the
wedding of his daughter and she has to go to the United States alone.

Woman´s decision:
In the United States after being humiliated by a child, she decides to
enroll in an English course.

How can we relate this film to the text “English has colonised our
languages”?
With this film we realize that English has been to globalize and to settle
around the world. Shashi to realize that the fact that she did not know English
that hinders social interaction. the fact that the film portrays the substitution
the native language for English (Shashi learning English to achieve their
independence) shows us that English is very important in the world making
people replace their native language by English.

What is the message of the film?


This is a movie about respect and the importance of English in our lives but
also conveys that we must overcome our fears and not be too traditional and
conservative if we want to be independent. we must invest in learning,
something that breaks new ground in the life of each person.

Persépolis:
Persépolis is a story of amazing and
captivating life of Marjane who grew up in a
country in constant changes and conflicts.
A film that portrays feminism, political and
religious extremism. Reports the midst of wars
and revolutions that swept through Iran in the
80 years.
Marjane wanted to lead a normal teenage
life, instead of covering her feet. The fact
that the story is told in black and white was
very captivating because it allows us to perceive the negative feelings of the
characters because they live in a society with values that do not associate and
that they can not live freely.
In conclusion, i think this was a movie very well done speaking of the
injustices and oppressions. these issues cause a great upheaval since reports
truthful stories that still occur in the world. Stories of great sadness.

Preparation for the Test:


The existence of a global language

The existence of a dominant language is essential for the world because it


allows the communication between people, commerce, tourism (…) all this is
possible if there is a language that all countries know.
While it´s advantages are self-evident there are some legitimate concerns
that a dominant global language could also have some built in drawbacks.
The risks of a global language can lead to the disappearance of minority
languages. There is concern that natural speakers of the global language may
be at an unfair advantage over those who are operating in their second or third
language.
The existence of one language to the exclusion of other may also be seen as
a threat to freedom of speech. Another potential pitfall is the complacency
linguistic on the part of natural speakers of a global language, a laziness and
arrogance resulting from the lack of motivation to learn other languages.
Probably, this can already be observed in many Americans.

Relevance of the English language in today´s world

English language has become more dominant around the world. In some
countries I tis used as the mother tongue and, other countries, learn it as a
second language in their schools. In addition, many reasons contributed to the
rise of the English language, for example, use it for communication between
people around the world, like us, it is language of modern times. On other hand,
English is the language of science and technology.
There is no doubt that the English is the language of communication
between the people with different cultures. It is also the language of
computers that help to communicate with people through internet and e-mail.
It is widely used is various fields, such as economy, commerce, medicine and
aviation.
English is an important requirement in most government and private jobs.
English has become a necessity nowadays.

The future status of English as the global language is assured?

Nowadays we recognize English as the global language.


The popularity of English start to grow with the invention of the computer
and the internet because most of web was in English.
However, everything changed, and we can see that English is losing its
dominance. Therefore, I think that the future status of English as a global
language is not assured.
The United States is the most developed country in the world, has the
control lots of things, so it is a good idea to learn English because it will make
it easier to economic relationship with this country. However, the United
States has experienced economic problems, resulting in the loss of the English
power.
Some people say that English will be always the global language and that
every day will need to learn English, but do not think that if we use English as
the only language, we are to accept the loss of our culture and uniqueness.
However, there is another language that is becoming more popular every
day, the Mandarin.
For all this, I think the English will no longer be the global language.

“What will the world speak in 2115”

In today's world, the English is the most spoken language in the world. This
is due to the high economy of the United States, which made the English as
the world center.
English is at the basis of commerce, business, technology, medicine, science
(...) allows people to communicate and people of different languages.
English as the dominant language allows the communication between
different languages. However, nowadays, each language wants to be dominant
since it brings importance to their country and this will be the center of the
world. One of the languages has grown is the Mandarin.
There are many Chinese’s products and due to the economic growth of china,
Mandarin has grown a lot in the modern world and can become as important as
the English. That is why the Mandarin began to be studied in many schools of
the world.
For all this reasons, I think it will be the dominant language in 2115.

French Ban on full-face veils"

About the use of full-face I'm torn in my


opinion.
On the one hand, I consider that the use of
full-face should be banned.
I consider that it is a symbol of inferiority
women have to cover their faces, while men can walk freely according to your
will. On the other hand, another aspect that lead me to believe that it is
essential to ban these veils, relates to the crimes, because these women could,
committing petty crimes and, because they are of face covered, it would be
difficult to identify them.
However, and, in another point of view, I believe that prohibit this practice
will be an act of prejudice. Foundation this view by the fact that each human
being must respect all cultures, regardless of not to relate with them, and that
should ensure the concept of joint life and protection of the rights and
freedoms of others.

empreendimentos audiovisuais. No dia 17 de fevereiro encontrar-me-ia, como
combinado, em casa de Mário Soares onde Ivanka Corti era convidada para o
almoço. Ali, embora ainda sob a emoção da vitória, Soares explicaria que tinha
ideia de aproveitar os recursos de algumas fundações partidárias que lhe eram
afetas, para participar na tão falada privatização dos meios de comunicação
social e abertura da TV ao sector privado. Queria primeiro estudar melhor o
assunto, mas desde logo pediria à convidada italiana que transmitisse um
convite seu a Sílvio Berlusconi para vir a Portugal.”

In last years, this was my favorite song. This song is by a woman, possibly
the singer, dedicated to her great love. This song speaks of longing.
This song speaks of a love that began in youth. The years passed, but,
nevertheless, she did not cease to like nor to have a special affection for him.
I liked this song very much, because of the pace, which although quiet, is
often a very lively pace that thrills me.
This song makes us realize two things. We should not be vindictive when
someone ends relationship.
When we like someone very much, I tis not the time that erases the love
that one person feels for another.
To conclude, this is a great song that by its emotional character sensitizes
the people and makes us think about the subject.

Brochure:

During one of the English classes


we were offered a support brochure
to help the families who would receive
students from Erasmus in their
homes. For this project we need
computer support, using the internet.
Here we resorted to the search for
fundamental expressions for the
communication of the , as well as
basic expressions and keywords for
fast communication.
With this work we tried to facilitate the communication between parents
and Erasmus students. With this "English Survivor" brochure the language
barrier that may exist between families and students is no longer an issue.

“Columbus Day” - Small class to first-year


students:

During one of the English classes we were proposed to present a subject


related to the discipline to the students in the 1st year, which was the
"Columbus Day".
For this challenge, we needed to use the Internet as a support for content
research, from which we extract some materials, thus completing our work and
ensuring the enthusiasm of the children. More precisely, related to the use of
physical materials we used: a map (to indicate where some English-speaking
countries were located), printed images (to instill a few words in English), and a
coloring drawing on the subject studied.
Firstly, we began by making a brief presentation and taking the opportunity
to explain what content to be approached. Next, we tried to interact with the
students by questioning them about the location of some countries, eventually
speaking about America and explaining the history of "Columbus Day" (adapted
to their ages). To make our presentation a little more complete, in a group, we
decided to show some images (related to the theme) and translate them into
English.
To conclude, we have given a coloring page about Columbus Day and we also
offered some cupcakes. In conclusion, at the end of the farewells, we held a
debate so that we could understand the advantages and disadvantages of this
activity. As a group, we realized that it would be beneficial both for us and for
students in the 1st cycle to repeat these activities, as they allow for greater
learning for both parties.
