Guided Discovery

Patricia & Jessica

Guided Discovery - What is it?
● Also called Inquiry-based teaching.
● A way for students to work more freely and make
discoveries while working. This then gives the teacher an
opportunity to expand upon the student’s discovery.
● “The teacher develops a series of logically designed
questions to give to the learner. The learner works
through the questions in sequence, and each answer leads
to the next question. Eventually, the student will come
to realize a predetermined concept. The teacher
acknowledges when the correct concepts are discovered.”
The 6 Stages of Guided Discovery
1. Inquisition: Ask the question
2. Acquisition: Talk about possibilities
3. Supposition: Decide what to test
4. Implementation: Creating a plan & testing it
5. Summation: Coming to conclusions
6. Exhibition: Results!
The 6 Stages of Guided Discovery
What does this look like in the Classroom?
Introducing students to paint:

- Inquisition: How can we mix paint to any color we see?

- Acquisition: give out different paints, brushes
- Supposition: focus on acrylic - mixing colors
- Implementation: make a color wheel, with 200 colors with
only primaries, white and black
- Summation: There are a lot of variations you can make by
mixing colors!
- Exhibition: Color wheel - painting
