LEADERSHIP IN NURSING
F. COMPETENCIES :
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
a. Use the concepts of leadership, management, change and communication in relation to
the role of professional nurses, nurse leaders, and nurse managers.
b. Utilize knowledge of leadership/management theory in examining organizational
effectiveness and nursing practice
c. Analyze the manager’s role in relation to cost and budgeting factors.
d. Apply leadership concepts, and decision making skills in the provision of high quality of
nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and accountability for care
delivery in a variety of settings.
e. Apply the concepts of quality and safety using structure, process, and outcome measure
to identify questions and describe the process of changing current practice.
f. Employ the principles of quality improvement, healthcare policy, and cost effectiveness
to improve nursing practice and promote quality of healthcare delivery.
G. COURSE DESCRIPTION :
This course uses a system framework and critical thinking strategies to study the coordinating
role of the professional nurse within healthcare services. Current theories of management,
leadership and change are discussed to an extent to nursing practice. This course focuses on
synthesis of leadership knowledge and concept to develop innovative and creative
approaches to improve current nursing practice.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
a. GENERAL OBJECTIVE :
After completing the learning activities, students are able to understand and apply the
concept of leadership and management in nursing, able to prepare, conduct and
manage the nursing care delivery in variety of settings.
b. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES :
After taking this course the students are able to:
1. Synthesize concepts of leadership, management, change and communication in
relation to the role of the professional nurse, nurse leader and nurse manager.
2. Analyze the economic, social, and demographic factors that influence the
organization and management of rural health care organizations.
3. Utilize knowledge of leadership/management theory in examining organizational
effectiveness and nursing practice.
4. Analyze the nurse manager’s role in relation to cost and budgeting factors.
5. Apply the leadership concepts, and decision-making skills in the provision of high
quality nursing care, healthcare team coordination, and the oversight and
accountability for care delivery in a variety of settings.
6. Apply the concepts of quality and safety using structure, process, and outcome
measures to identify clinical questions and describe the process of changing
current practice.
7. Employ the principles of quality improvement, and cost effectiveness to improve
practice and promote quality of healthcare delivery.
8. Utilize current healthcare policy that impact nursing practice to improve the
quality of nursing services.
9. Understand and apply theory related to Human – Computer Interaction (HCI),
ethics, confidentiality and privacy, caring, ergonomics and nursing informatics to
nursing practice.

b. SKILLS:
1) Demonstrate ability to negotiate and lobby as professional nurses to give maintain
high quality of care to patients.
2) Demonstrate ability using quality improvement tool in a provided case.
3) Demonstrate ability to use the concept of leadership, finance and budget, quality
improvement and healthcare informatics to propose solutions for certain problems.

OBJECTIVES :
1. Increase students’ understanding as nurse leaders and managers in budgeting in nursing
practice.
2. Increase students’ understanding as nurse leaders and managers in improving the quality of
nursing practice.
3. Increase students’ understanding as nurse leaders and managers about their role in
healthcare informatics to improve nursing care services.
