1) What is all about clutch?

Clutch is the basic component in transportation and it is connect and disconnect two
rotating shafts which line shaft and drive shaft. Clutch also known as mechanical device
which engages and disengages power transmission especially from driving shaft to driven
shaft. In these components, one shaft is normally appended to a motor or other power unit
(the driving part) while the other shaft (the determined part) gives yield energy to work.
While regularly the movements included are revolving, straight grasps are additionally
conceivable.

2) Classification of clutches and how its work?

There are many types of clutches. These may classify as follow:

A) According to the method of transmitting torque:

i) Friction clutches
 single plate clutch
It consists of one friction plate and Pressure plate. With the power from
springs weight plate holds the contact amongst flywheel and grating plate.

 multiple clutch

Figure 2
It is similar in construction and operation to single plate clutch but consist of
no of friction and pressure plates. This will reduce the slip between flywheel
and friction plates which increases the efficiency of clutch
 cone clutch

Figure 3
It won’t contain any plates. It equipped with male and female cone
members. Male member is connected to driven member and female
member connected to driving member. Periphery of male member is coated
with friction lining.
 Centrifugal clutch

Springs are predetermined according to speed of engine. When Engine
speed increases due to centrifugal force springs start expanding to blocks
move towards the drum. The blocks start rotating the drum with it.

ii) Fluid flywheel

iii) Positive clutch
iv) Hydraulic clutch
 Fluid coupling
 Hydraulic torque Converter
B) According to method of engaging clutch:
i) Spring type Clutch
ii) Centrifugal Clutch
iii) Semi-Centrifugal Clutch
iv) Electro-magnate Clutch

C) According to method of Control:

i) Manual clutch
ii) Automatic clutch
