Shiba Inu

• The first Shiba Inu intro-

duced in the United States
was imported by a military
family in 1954, but the
breed is believed to have
been around since 300 BC.

• The breed almost went

extinct in Japan after WWII
from distemper, an ex-
tremely infectious virus

About the Breed
The Shiba Inu is a Japanese breed, bred
for small game hunting in the bush and
on mountainous terrain. Considered a
“national treasure” of Japan, these
dogs are the smallest of the six original
spitz breed dogs.
