Monday 9:40 – 12:30 (3 hours) MM125

Course Description
Internal forces, stress, strain and their relations, stresses and deformations under axial and torsional loading, indeterminate
problems, stresses and deformations in flexural members, column analysis, introduction to member design.

Textbook
Beer, F., Johnston, Jr. E.R., DeWolf, J. and Mazurek, D., Mechanics of Materials, 7th Edition in SI Units, McGraw-Hill
Education, 2015.

Objectives
To introduce the basic principles of stress and strain, the deformability of elastic bodies due to axial, torsional and flexural
loadings, the fundamentals of beam theory and its applications, and the principles of member failure and design.

Grading:
Based on a weighted average of attendance, midterm exams and a final exam. Approximate grade distribution is as the
following.
 Attendance 5 %
 Midterm exam 1 25 %
 Midterm Exam 2 30 %
 Final exam 40 %
Letter grades will be assigned according to university grading system written in the university catalog.
