writer makes to show HONOR for the former president).

Bell Ringer
Notes -- Fourth
In order to have a solid sense of self, you must take
ownership of the things that happen around you.

When you take ownership of the things that happen

around you, you develop a solid sense of self.

Although some individuals may debate that sense of

self is an individual entity and has no correlation to the
ownership of materialistic and symbolic items, the bond
between a person’s sense of self is directly connected
when an owner values something immensely and
protects it with their life because it gives their sense of
self credibility and a deeper understanding.

Bell Ringer
Notes -- Fifth

Whenever someone owns something

and wants to protect it, sense of self
is shown.

When one holds onto a value of their

character just as one holds on to
something of material and preserves
it, a sense of self is formed.

TW: Prompt Analysis -- Pg 145-146
Use the Persuasive Essay Topics for Practice to practice
analyzing prompts. In your DN, write the TASK verb(s), write the
implied question(s), paraphrase any statements or assertions,
explain HOW the task is complex, and write a thesis.

Revision: Parallelism -- 162-165

Read the notes, take turns verbally discussing the Mini-Workout,
then pick an IWA to revise for parallelism. In your DN, add 3
sentences that have been revised for parallelism.

MC: Techniques, Passage 1 -- 93-98

Work through the MC passage together. Try to decide on an
answer BEFORE you read the explanation. In your DN, for each
question 1-8 write whether you got the right answer, how you
knew it was right, or why you got it wrong. Additionally, make a
list of words you don’t know.

In 1891, Irish Oscar Wilde observed, “Disobedience, in the
eyes of anyone who has read history, is man’s original virtue.
It is through disobedience that progress has been made,
through disobedience and through rebellion.”

Wilde claims that disobedience is a valuable human trait and

that
it promotes social progress. Write an essay that argues your
position on the extent to which Wilde’s claims are valid.

3/28 Write an introduction to the following prompt:
For centuries, prominent thinkers have pondered the
relationship between ownership and the development of self
(identity), ultimately asking the question, “What does it mean
to own something?” Plato argues that owning objects is
detrimental to a person’s character. Aristotle claims that
ownership of tangible goods helps to develop moral
character. Twentieth-century philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre
proposes that
ownership extends beyond objects to include intangible
things as
well. In Sartre’s view, becoming proficient in some skill and
knowing
something thoroughly means that we “own” it.

Mistakes are at the very base of human thought, embedded

there,
feeding the structure like root nodules. If we were not provided
with the knack of being wrong, we could never get anything

done. We think our way along by choosing between right and
wrong alternatives, and the wrong choices have to be made as

“We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape

~ Sir Winston Churchill, 28 October 1943

“Bad lighting, windowless walls, low ceilings, and dull

furniture are the hallmarks of many an office, hospital, care
center, or any place aiming for cost-effective function over
beauty. But good-looking environments matter....good design

intro:
Newton’s first law states that an object at rest will stay
at rest while an object in motion will stay in motion. In
other words, only by applying force will the motion of
an object change. In a similar vein, it is through
disobedience and rebellion that social progress can
be made.

× You should focus on one, concrete example.

Write a paragraph to support the following intro:
I believe that the term “ownership” applies to both the
tangible and the intangible. It’s possible to own both a
physical object, such as a watch, and something that
will only exist in our
minds, such as a concept or idea. The verb “to own”
doesn’t just mean to have something; it means that
we
know something, or that we have made it a
part of ourselves.

Write a paragraph to support the following intro:
Daniel J. Boorstin claims that there is a great
difference between disagreement and dissension: that
one is good and one is bad, that one belongs to the
majority while the other belongs to the minority.
However, I believe that there is less distinction than
Boorstin would think. Dissention is merely a more
severe or radical form of disagreement.

Write a paragraph to support the following intro:
Schopenhauer claims that learning through reading
has an effect of limiting one’s opinion while self-
thinking still opens up opinions which is more useful in
developing the world. To some extent,
Schopenhauer’s claims are true. Although reading
literature
can open up views that can benefit the society,
educational
readings can have a propagandistic effect. When
reading
involves educational books, therefore, it is better to
self-think
in order to open up views.

Write a paragraph to support the following intro:
To give or not to give? That is the universal question that Peter
Singer, a professor of bioethics, has addressed in this piece,
“The Singer
Solution to World Poverty,” published in The New York Times
Magazine. Singer says, “The formula is simple: whatever money
you’re spending on luxuries, not necessities, should be given
away.”
Singer’s argument rests on a delicate balance of human morals,
natural impulses, and decisions that is not plausible or realistic;
Singer’s “solution,” though idealistic and noble, is not connected
closely enough to reality to be a viable choice in the fight against
world poverty.
