INSTALLATION OF A NEW PARISH PRIEST

WITHIN MASS

The rite of installation takes place after the homily.

Commentator: We now come to the Rite of the Installation of

Rev. Fr. <N.> as the Parish Priest of the <N.> Parish.

The appointment letter is read by the Vicar Forane.

Archbishop: Beloved brother in Christ, you must renew your

Profession of Faith in the presence of the people to
be entrusted to your pastoral care.

Parish Priest: I, Rev. Fr. <N.>,

with firm faith, believe and profess each and
everything that is contained
in the Symbol of Faith, namely:

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the
Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary
and became man.

1
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

With firm faith, I also believe in everything contained

in the Word of God, whether written or handed down in
Tradition,
which the Church, either by a solemn judgment
or by the ordinary and universal Magisterium,
sets forth to be believed as divinely revealed.

I also firmly accept and hold each and everything

definitively proposed by the Church
regarding faith and morals.

Moreover, I adhere with religious submission of will and

intellect
to the teachings, which either the Roman Pontiff or the
College of Bishops
enunciate when they exercise their authentic
Magisterium,

2
even if they do not intend to proclaim these teachings
by a definitive act.

INTERROGATION:

Archbishop: It is the duty of the priest to proclaim

the Word of God.

He must study the Bible and meditate on its

message, believe what he reads, teach what he
believes and practice what he teaches.

Are you willing to co-operate

with your Archbishop
in preaching Christ in season and out of season,
explaining to all the Word of God?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

Archbishop: The priest gathers together the people of God for

prayer and sustains them as they go forth to carry
out the mission of the Church to the world.

Are you ready to pray with the people as well as

for them, and to lead and encourage them in their
apostolate in the world?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

Archbishop: The priest cares for the people by celebrating with

them the Sacraments.
When he baptizes, he brings men and women into
the Family of God;
he witnesses their marriage vows;
in the Sacrament of Reconciliation he forgives sins
in the name of Christ and His Church;
with holy oil, he strengthens and consoles the sick
and the dying.
3
Will you prepare your people by wise instruction
to receive the Sacraments worthily and fruitfully?
Priest: I will, with the help of God.

Archbishop: It is the priest’s privilege and duty to celebrate the

Sacrifice of the Mass and to proclaim the Lord’s
death until He comes, to feed the people with the
Body and Blood of Christ.

Are you willing to celebrate the Mass faithfully

for the living and the dead as the Church ordains
for the glory of God and the sanctification of
Christ’s people?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

Archbishop: The priest is called to promote justice and peace

among all peoples and to share the Good News
with all who are persecuted, marginalized
and underprivileged in society.

Are you willing to strive for justice and

understanding among all people, based on the
Truth of the Gospel?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

Archbishop: It is the priest’s privilege and duty to sustain and

guide his people along the way to unity with all
Christians and to seek the gifts of unity and peace
for the world.

Are you willing to work zealously to overcome

division and to seek the unity for which Jesus
prayed?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

4
Archbishop: The priest must be without reproach and his
endeavour must give no ground for scandal, for he
is the ambassador of Christ.

Are you resolved to carry out your duties as Parish

Priest giving no grounds for reproach?
Priest: I am, with the help of God.

Commentator: All stand.

The Archbishop sets aside his miter. He then invites the people to pray, saying:

Archbishop: Let us pray:

God our Father, look upon this priest,

your servant and co worker
with his Archbishop in this Parish.
May his word and example
inspire and guide your people here
and may he and all those in his care come
to the joy of everlasting life.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

The Archbishop stands and seats the new parish priest in the chair. He then hands the
key of the tabernacle to the new parish priest. The new parish priest is greeted by the
Archbishop and the concelebrating priests.

The Universal Prayers follows, then the presentation of gifts. Mass proceeds as usual.
