Which narrative strand is specific and central to the episode?

I think April's story is central and specific due to the relationship shown with her and her father.
At the beginning of the episode, it is made clear to the audience that April hasn't seen her dad in
a long time, therefore when he confronts her, it is understandable that she is startled and angry.
When Corakinus tries connecting with April's heart, her father overhears that she is in trouble,
and goes to her house. This further angers April and pushes her to the edge, forcing her to
show her powers in a dangerous way, once again. This puts her father in a frightful and difficult
position, forcing him to swear not to bother her or her mother again. The type of relationship and
drama shown between April and her dad is unlikely to be shown again, therefore specific to this
episode only.

Which narrative strand builds from previous and continues?

I would argue that Corakinus’ story is an episode that builds from a previous one and continues
throughout others. This is because Corakinus is a character center to the story, and is always
brought up and shown throughout the episodes.

Which narrative strand sets up for next episode?

Aprils story, as at the end of the episode, the audience is shown that April has now entered
Corakinus’ lair, and Ram jumps in after her as an act of bravery. What happens next is shown in
the next episode.

State what hybridity exists in this episode.

Class in itself is a hybridity, consisting of many cross genres such as romance, action, mystery
and drama. The episode in particular consists mostly of romance and drama.

Why have the writers done this?

I think the writers have done this to create a variety of genres for the audience to relate to, and
use it as an attempt to widen the audience, in hopes of more genres meaning more people to
attract.
What stereotypes are used here and why?

Charlie is the gay character of the series, and is also an alien. As the aliens are perceived as
outsiders and strange, it is evident that he is the gay character, as homosexuality can also be
seen as unusual. Charlie is exhibited in a tidy, neat and proper manner, and has mildly feminine
features, which depicts homosexuality.

Ram is a British Indian, which means he is stuck in the middle of western and Asian culture. He
is constantly being bothered by his stereotypically Indian, strict father, while he disagrees with
him sometimes, and is dragged into western ideology. He is in a relationship with April, a white,
British teenager, also the ‘princess of the story”. Ram and April are an interracial couple and he
is her emotional support throughout tough times, which is stereotypically what a male/boyfriend
is.

April is the only child to a single parent, after her mother and father separated due to him
attempting to kill himself along with his family. Genuinely, single parents are more accepted and
more common in England, specifically London in this case, and this can be relatable for some
audiences. April has blue eyes, a common eye colour for British people, however has brown
hair, which depicts innocence.

Tanya is one of the main characters who is a different race, and has a overprotective mother,
which is a stereotype for Africans. She is the help, and mildly important. Despite her not having
an irreplaceable and important role, it is evident that a character of different race is shown, in an
attempt to attract interracial audiences.
