Indicator 1.1 - Creates developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences based on
each learner’s strengths, interests, and needs.
Indicator 1.2 - Collaborates with families, colleagues, and other professionals to promote student
growth and development.
Standard 1 Comments
Kelsey planned a math lesson that is developmentally appropriate for her 4th grade class. She understands
learner development and created a challenging experience in line plots and fractions. She collaborated with
her mentor ,families and colleagues to promote student development and growth.
Standard 1 Additional Comments
Indicator 2.1 - Allows learners multiple ways to demonstrate learning sensitive to diverse experiences,
while holding high expectations for all.
Standard 2 Comments
Kelsey provided multiple ways for her students to work with the objectives of the line plots and fraction
lesson. They had opportunities to work with buddies as they sorted through data and solved problems. She
also gave students individual support when needed.
Indicator 3.1 - Develops learning experiences that engage and support students as self-directed
learners who internalize classroom routines, expectations, and procedures.
Indicator 3.2 - Collaborates with students to establish a positive learning climate of openness,
respectful interactions, support, and inquiry.
Indicator 3.3 - Utilizes positive classroom management strategies, including the resources of time,
space, and attention, effectively.
Standard 3 Comments
Kelsey establishes a positive and productive working environment where students are cooperative and
respectful of each other. She maintains routines to keep her students engaged and on task. Kelsey is a
facilitator as her students work with a buddy to solve the big idea for the day.
Indicator 4.1 - Bases instruction on accurate content knowledge using multiple representations of
concepts and appropriate academic language.
Kelsey links past learning in line plots and fractions to the new concepts. She gives them time to try to solve
the problems that focus on today’s lesson. They then work with a partner to find more clues to the solution.
They learn to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Indicator 5.1 - Uses data sources to assess the effectiveness of instruction and to make adjustments in
planning and instruction.
Indicator 5.2 - Documents student progress and provides descriptive feedback to student,
parent/guardian, and other stakeholders in a variety of ways.
Indicator 5.3 - Designs or selects pre-assessments, formative, and summative assessments in a variety
of formats that align to learning objectives and engage the learner in demonstrating knowledge and
skills.
Standard 5 Comments
Kelsey uses a variety of assessments in this lesson. She assesses informally and formally students’
understanding of line plots and fractions. She provides specific feedback throughout the lesson. The final
assessment is the homework page that relates to today’s objectives.
Indicator 6.1 - Demonstrates knowledge of the Utah Core Standards and references them in short- and
long-term planning.
Indicator 6.2 - Integrates cross-disciplinary skills into instruction to purposefully engage learners in
applying content knowledge.
Kelsey uses core standards in math for 4th grade to drive her instruction. She reviews key math vocabulary
( difference, denominator, numerator, total) and concepts connected to the objectives (written on the board)
of this lesson. She gives her learners opportunities to engage with each other to make sense of problems
about line plots using fractions.
Indicator 7.2 - Provides multiple opportunities for students to develop higher-order and meta-cognitive
skills.
Indicator 7.3 - Supports and expands each learner’s communication skills through reading, writing,
listening, and speaking.
Indicator 7.4 - Uses a variety of available and appropriate technology and resources to support
learning.
Indicator 7.5 - Develops learners’ abilities to find and use information to solve real-world problems
Standard 7 Comments
During her lesson Kelsey uses questions that promote higher-order thinking skills. Was their reasoning
correct? Her students are given time to engage in class discussions to share information (to agree or
disagree) as well as sharing it with a partner. She paces the lesson appropriately to her students ability
level. She uses technology to support this lesson. Volunteers are given opportunities to write the answer on
the document camera.
Indicator 8 - Adapts and improves practice based on reflection and new learning.
Kelsey is a reflective teacher. She evaluates the lesson and accepts suggestions to make her teaching
better.
Indicator 9.1 -Participates actively in decision-making processes, while building a shared culture that
affects the school and larger educational community.
Indicator 9.2 -Advocates for the learners, the school, the community, and the profession.
Standard 9 Comments
