Lateral Thinking Puzzles #1 - Thinking Age Brain Teaser

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

Two friends , Torres and Lampard, meet after a long time.

Torres: Hey, how are you man?

Lampard: Not bad, got married and I have three kids now.
Torres: That's awesome. How old are they?
Lampard: The product of their ages is 72 and the sum of their ages is the same as your
birth date.
Torres: Cool..But I still don't know.
Lampard: My eldest kid just started taking piano lessons.
Torres: Oh now I get it.

How old are Lampard's kids?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
3,3,8

Lets break it down. The product of their ages is 72. So what are the possible choices?

2, 2, 18 sum(2, 2, 18) = 22
2, 4, 9 sum(2, 4, 9) = 15
2, 6, 6 sum(2, 6, 6) = 14
2, 3, 12 sum(2, 3, 12) = 17
3, 4, 6 sum(3, 4, 6) = 13
3, 3, 8 sum(3, 3, 8 ) = 14
1, 8, 9 sum(1,8,9) = 18
1, 3, 24 sum(1, 3, 24) = 28
1, 4, 18 sum(1, 4, 18) = 23
1, 2, 36 sum(1, 2, 36) = 39
1, 6, 12 sum(1, 6, 12) = 19

The sum of their ages is the same as your birth date. That could be anything from 1 to 31 but the fact
that Torres was unable to find out the ages, it means there are two or more combinations with the
same sum. From the choices above, only two of them are possible now.

2, 6, 6 sum(2, 6, 6) = 14
3, 3, 8 sum(3, 3, 8 ) = 14

Since the eldest kid is taking piano lessons, we can eliminate combination 1 since there are two eldest
ones. The answer is 3, 3 and 8.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #5 - Crossing Bridge Brain Teaser

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

Four friends need to cross a dangerous bridge at night. Unfortunately, they have only one
torch and the bridge is too dangerous to cross without one. The bridge is only strong
enough to support two people at a time. Not all people take the same time to cross the
bridge. Times for each person: 1 min, 2 mins, 7 mins and 10 mins. What is the shortest
time needed for all four of them to cross the bridge?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
17 mins

The initial solution most people will think of is to use the fastest person as an usher to guide everyone
across. How long would that take? 10 + 1 + 7 + 1 + 2 = 21 mins. Is that it? No. That would make this
question too simple even as a warm up question.

Let’s brainstorm a little further. To reduce the amount of time, we should find a way for 10 and 7 to
go together. If they cross together, then we need one of them to come back to get the others. That
would not be ideal. How do we get around that? Maybe we can have 1 waiting on the other side to
bring the torch back. Ahaa, we are getting closer. The fastest way to get 1 across and be back is to
use 2 to usher 1 across. So let’s put all this together.

1 and 2 go cross
2 comes back
7 and 10 go across
1 comes back
1 and 2 go across (done)
Total time = 2 + 2 + 10 + 1 + 2 = 17 mins

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #6 - Fake Coin Brain Teaser

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

In front of you, there are 9 coins. They all look absolutely identical, but one of the coins is
fake. However, you know that the fake coin is lighter than the rest, and in front of you is a
balance scale. What is the least number of weightings you can use to find the counterfeit
coin?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The answer is 2. First, divide the coins into 3 equal piles. Place a pile on each side of the scale, leaving
the remaining pile of 3 coins off the scale. If the scale does not tip, you know that the 6 coins on the
scale are legitimate, and the counterfeit is in the pile in front of you. If the scale does tip, you know
the counterfeit is in the pile on the side of the scale that raised up. Either way, put the 6 legitimate
coins aside. Having only 3 coins left, put a coin on each side of the scale, leaving the third in front of
you. The same process of elimination will find the counterfeit coin.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #7 - Logical Bank Brain Teaser

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

A bank customer had Rs.100 in his account. He then made 6 withdrawals, totaling Rs.. He
kept a record of these withdrawals, and the balance remaining in the account, as follows:

Withdrawals Balance left

Rs.50 Rs.50
Rs.25 Rs.25
Rs.10 Rs.15
Rs.8 Rs.7
Rs.5 Rs.2
Rs.2 Rs.0
Rs.100 Rs.99

Why are the Totals not exactly right ?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
There is no reason whatever why the customer's original deposit of Rs.100 should equal the total of
the balances left after each withdrawal.
The total of withdrawals in the left-hand colum may equal Rs.100, but is is purely coincidence that the
total of the right-hand column is close to Rs.100.
Let us show another example, but starting with Rs.200 in the bank:
Withdrawals Balance left
Rs.50 Rs.150
Rs.25 Rs.125
Rs.10 Rs.115
Rs.8 Rs.107
Rs.5 Rs.102
Rs.2 Rs.100
Rs.100 Rs.699
Moral of this story? Don't Total Balances

using your power you came to know only on of the inscriptions is correct.
Behind which door will you find the spirit?
View Answer Work Space Discuss

The spirit lies behind Door 4.

If the spirit is behind Door 1, then both 2 and 3 are true.

If the spirit is behind Door 2, then both 1 and 4 are true.

If the spirit is behind Door 3, then 1, 3, and 4 are all true.

If the spirit is behind Door 4, then the statements on all the doors are false, except for that on Door 2.
This matches the rules, and therefore, the resort hotel spirit lurks behind Door 4.

bought the flowers matching her name'.
'You're right!', said Lily.
What kind of flowers did each of the girls buy?

Kangwa, Rafael and Ferdinand plans for gun fighting.
They each get a gun and take turns shooting at each other until only one person is left.

History suggest
Kangwa hits his shot 1/3 of the time, gets to shoot first.
Rafael, hits his shot 2/3 of the time, gets to shoot next if still living.
Ferdinand having perfect record at shooting(100% accuracy) shoots last , if alive.

The cycle repeats. If you are Kangwa, where should you shoot first for the highest chance of
survival?

Solution:
He should shoot at the ground.

If Kangwa shoots the ground, it is Rafael's turn. Rafael would rather shoot at Ferdinand than Kangwa,
because he is better.
If Rafael kills Ferdinand, it is just Kangwa and Rafael left, giving Kangwa a fair chance of winning.
If Rafael does not kill Ferdinand, it is Ferdinand's turn. He would rather shoot at Rafael and will
definitely kill him. Even though it is now Kangwa against Ferdinand, Kangwa has a better chance of
winning than before.

There is no mention if you can use sign or not and thus the only possible way to get this is as follows:

(15 - 9) + (13 - 7) + (7 - 1) + (9 - 1) + (13 - 9)

If you solve inside the brackets, you will get the following equation
6+6+6+8+4

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #13 - Find Out Who Survives Riddle

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

100 people are standing in a circle. The person standing at number 1 is having a sword. He
kills the person next to him with the sword and then gives the sword to the third person.
This process is carried out till there is just one person left.

Can you find out who survives?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The person on 73rd number will survive.

Explanation:
Till the number is the power of 2, the last person to survive will be the one who started it. But since
the number here is not the power of 2, we will take the greatest power of 2 that is less than the
number which is 64.
100 - 64 = 36
36 people are killed as 2, 4, 6, ..., 72. Thus the sword will now be given to the 73rd person. Now he is
the first person to start in the remaining 64 people. Thus he will be the one to survive.

A homicide detective is called at a crime scene. A man is lying dead in front of the building
and seeking the position of the windows on the building and the position in which the body
is lying, it is evident that the man jumped out from one of them and committed suicide.

The detective asks his team to collect the traces if they can find any on the body and heads
towards the building. He goes to the first floor and towards the room that is on the front
side. Inside the room, he lights a cigarette, walks towards the window facing the dead body,
opens the window and throws out the cigarette. He then goes to the second floor and
repeats the same process.

He keeps doing the same thing till he is done with all the floors and then takes the lift to the
ground floor. Upon reaching there, he informs the team that it is not a suicide but a murder.

While the whole team is shocked to hear the revelation, he lights another cigarette and
takes a hard puff.

How do you think he found out that it was a not a suicide?

has a shabby haircut. While the shop in the northern market is quite neat and clean and the
barber is sporting an excellent haircut himself.

Which of the two shops will any foreign visitor opt for?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Anybody will prefer the shop in the eastern market for sure. There are two reasons for it:
Firstly, since there are only two barbers in the town, the one running the shop in eastern market must
have gotten his hair done by the one running the shop in the northern market and vice versa. Thus, if
the barber in the eastern market has a shabby haircut, it must be due to the incompatibility.
Secondly, the neat and clean shop can be due to the scarcity of customers as well. While the untidy
place refers to the fact that so many customers get their hair done in that shop.

Thus any one will opt for the barber shop in the eastern market.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #21 - Birbal Brain Teaser

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

Birbal is a witty trader who trade of a mystical fruit grown far in north. He travels from one
place to another with three sacks which can hold 30 fruits each. None of the sack can hold
more than 30 fruits. On his way, he has to pass through thirty check points and at each
check point, he has to give one fruit for each sack to the authorities.

How many mystical fruits remain after he goes through all the thirty check points?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
25 Fruits

Remember we told you that Birbal is a witty trader. So his sole motive is to get rid of the sacks as fast
as he can.

For the first sack:

He must be able to fill fruits from one sack to other two sacks. Assume that he is able to do that after
M check points. Now to find M,

(Space in first sack) M + (Space in second sack) M = (Remaining fruits in Third Sack) 30 – M
M = 10

Thus after 10 checkpoints, Birbal will be left with only 2 sacks containing 30 fruits each.

Now he must get rid of the second sack.

For that, he must fill the fruits from second sack to the first sack. Assume that he manages to do that
after N checkpoints.

(Space in First Sack) N = (Remaining fruits in second sack) 30 – N

N = 15

Thus after he has crossed 25 checkpoints, he will be left be one sack with 30 fruits in it. He has to
pass five more checkpoints where he will have to give five fruits and he will be left with twenty five
fruits once he has crossed all thirty check points.

This is a contradiction, so the answer cannot be 1/4.

2) why cant be 1/2 : If the answer is 1/2 then because answer:"1/2" is 1 out of 4 answer choices, the
answer must be 1/4. This is also a contradiction. So the answer cannot be 1/2.

3) why cant be 1 : If the answer is 1 then because answer:"1" is 1 out of 4 answer choices, the

coin is in the group 9,10,11,12. So for our second one possibility is to weigh 9,10,11 against
1,2,3

(1) They balance, in which case you know 12 is the different coin, and you just weigh it against
any other to determine whether it is heavy or light.
(2) 9,10,11 is heavy. In this case, you know that the different coin is 9, 10, or 11, and that that
coin is heavy. Simply weigh 9 against 10; if they balance, 11 is the heavy coin. If not, the heavier
one is the heavy coin.
(3) 9,10,11 is light. Proceed as in the step above, but the coin you're looking for is the light one.

That was the easy part.

What if the first weighing 1,2,3,4 vs 5,6,7,8 does not balance? Then any one of these coins could
be the different coin. Now, in order to proceed, we must keep track of which side is heavy for
each of the following weighings.

Suppose that 5,6,7,8 is the heavy side. We now weigh 1,5,6 against 2,7,8. If they balance, then
the different coin is either 3 or 4. Weigh 4 against 9, a known good coin. If they balance then the
different coin is 3, otherwise it is 4. The direction of the tilts can tell us whwther the offending
coin is heavier or lighter.

Now, if 1,5,6 vs 2,7,8 does not balance, and 2,7,8 is the heavy side, then either 7 or 8 is a
different, heavy coin, or 1 is a different, light coin.

For the third weighing, weigh 7 against 8. Whichever side is heavy is the different coin. If they
balance, then 1 is the different coin. Should the weighing of 1,5, 6 vs 2,7,8 show 1,5,6 to be the
heavy side, then either 5 or 6 is a different heavy coin or 2 is a light different coin. Weigh 5
against 6. The heavier one is the different coin. If they balance, then 2 is a different light coin.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #37 - Hard Ten Boxes Interview Puzzle

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

You have ten boxes and an electronic weighing machine. In those ten boxes, you have
chocolates. Each chocolate weigh 20 grams. But in one box the chocolates are defective and
each weigh 19 grams exactly.

Now you can weigh in the electronic weighing machine but you can use that machine just
once. How will you find out which box has the defected chocolates.
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
If you are thinking to hold one chocolate from each box in hand and then balancing weight in
bare hands, you are thinking all wrong.

Let us begin by labelling boxes as 1, 2, 3 and so on till 10.

Now pick one chocolate from box 1, two chocolates from box 2, three from box 3 and so on. In
total, you will have 55 chocolates now. (1 + 2 + 3 + ..... + 10)

The ideal weight of the chocolates should be 55 * 20 = 1100. However, somewhere in there are
the defected chocolate/s.

You can judge that clearly by noting down the result of 1100 - total weight of chocolates. If the
weight is less than 1 gram, the defected box is box 1, if the weight is less than 2 grams, the
defected box is box 2 and so on.

Suppose there is a Christmas tree and four angels are sitting on it amidst the other
ornaments. Two of them have black halos and two of them have white halos. No body
among them can see above their head. Angel A is sitting on the top branch and can see
angels B and C sitting below him. B can see C who is sitting in a branch lower than his.
Angel D is at the base of the tree and can't be seen due to the branches in between. Also,
he can't see anybody as well.

If they are asked to guess the color of their own halo (they dont know that), who do you
think will be able to deduce and speak up first with a right answer?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Now there can be two solutions to the given situation because there can be two situations:
Suppose if B and C have same colors, A will know that his color is the other one and he will be
able to speak up the first.
Now if B and C do not have same colors, A will stay silent. This will tell B that his and C's
colors are different. Thus he will speak up first.

So either A or B will speak up first depending on the situation.

There are two glasses in front of you. One of the glasses is full of coke and the other glass is
full of lemonade. You take a spoonful of coke and mix it into the glass of lemonade. Now the
lemonade glass has a mixture of coke and lemonade. You take a spoonful of that mixture
and mix it inside the coke glass.

Now what do you think? - The glass with coke has more quantity of lemonade or the glass
with lemonade have more quantity of coke mixed with it?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
This problem can be solved with algebra as well as logical reasoning. We are going to tell you how it is
logically possible.

Be it any quantity that was present in the beginning and any liquid as well. We know that we have
taken a spoonful from one glass and put it into another. Then, we have taken a spoonful from the
other glass and put it into the first glass. So, at the end of it, the quantity of liquid in either glass
remains same as it was in the beginning.

Therefore, we can conclude the fact that any amount of coke that is missing in the glass with coke will
be present in the lemonade glass. Also, the same quantity of lemonade will be missing from the
lemonade glass and will be present in the coke glass.

In a jar, there are some orange candies and some strawberry candies. You pick up two
candies at a time randomly. If the two candies are of same flavor, you throw them away
and put a strawberry candy inside. If they are of opposite flavors, you throw them away and
put an orange candy inside.

In such manner, you will be reducing the candies in the jar one at a time and will eventually
be left with only one candy in the jar.

If you are told about the respective number of orange and strawberry candies at the outset,
will it be feasible for you to predict the flavor of the final remaining candy ?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
At each draw, the number of strawberry candies are either decreasing by 2 or not decreasing at all. In
the case of orange candies, at each draw, they are either increasing by 1 or decreasing by 1.

Thus on an assumed outset with at least one candy in the jar to begin with, if the number of
strawberry candies are 0 or are even in numbers, they will finish off leaving an orange candy at the
end. If otherwise, the remaining candy will be a strawberry one.

David and Albert are playing a game. There are digits from 1 to 9. The catch is that each
one of them has to cut one digit and add it to his respective sum. The one who is able to
obtain a sum of exact 15 will win the game?

You are a friend of David. Do you suggest him to play first or second?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
David to play second

Explanation:
Let's suppose that David plays first and he picks 9. Then Albert will definitely pick 8. Now, David will
have to pick 7 or Albert will pick 7 in his turn. But if David picks up 7, then he will score 16 that is
beyond 15 and will lose. So one thing is for sure, no one will be willing to start with the highest digits.

Suppose David plays first and picks up 1, Albert will pick 2. Then David will pick 3 and Albert will pick
4. Now David will be forced to pick 9. The score is 6 to 13 and thus David will have no chance of
winning.

If David Picks 9 after Albert has picked up 2, then Albert will pick 8 and the score will become 10 to
10. Thus David will pick 3 as picking 7 will send him past 15. Now Albert will pick 4 and David has
nothing to pick for winning. Thus Albert wins.

Therefore, you should suggest David to play second.

There stand nine temples in a row in a holy place. All the nine temples have 100 steps
climb. A fellow devotee comes to visit the temples. He drops a Re. 1 coin while climbing
each of the 100 steps up. Then he offers half of the money he has in his pocket to the god.
After that, he again drops Re. 1 coin while climbing down each of the 100 steps of the
temple.

If he repeats the same process at each temple, he is left with no money after climbing down
the ninth temple. Can you find out the total money he had with him initially?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
146900

Explanation:
Whenever you face such type of questions, it is wise to begin from the last thing. Here in this question
the last thing will be the 9th temple. He climbed down 100 steps and thus you know, he had Rs. 100
before beginning climbing down. Thus, he must have offered Rs. 100 to the god in that temple too (he
offered half of the total amount). Also, he must have dropped Rs. 100 while climbing the steps of the
ninth temple. This means that he had Rs. 300 before he begand climbing the steps of the ninth
temple.

Now, we will calculate in the similar manner for each of the temples backwards.
Before the devotee climbed the eight temple: (300+100)*2 + 100 = 900
Before the devotee climbed the seventh temple: (900+100)*2 + 100 = 2100
Before the devotee climbed the Sixth temple: (2100+100)*2 + 100 = 4300
Before the devotee climbed the fifth temple: (4300+100)*2 + 100 = 8900
Before the devotee climbed the fourth temple: (8900+100)*2 + 100 = 18100
Before the devotee climbed the third temple: (18100+100)*2 + 100 = 36,500
Before the devotee climbed the second temple: (36500+100)*2 + 100 = 73300
Before the devotee climbed the first temple: (73300+100)*2 + 100 = 146900

Therefore, the devotee had Rs. 146900 with him initially.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #54 - Cricket Teasers

If in a cricket one day match, there were no wide balls, no wides, no extras and no
overthrows.

What is the maximum number of runs that a batsman can score in an ideal case scenario?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
1653

Explanation:
For an ideal case, the batsman will hit a six on each ball. But if he hits six on the last ball of the over,
the strike will change in the next over. Thus, the best he can do in the last ball is run 3 runs so that he
retains the strike even in the next over. Thus the total runs that he can score in each over:
6 * 5 + 3 = 33
But this will have to go like it only till the 49th over. In the last over, he can hit a six in the last ball as
well as that will be the last ball of the match.
Thus runs for the last over will be 6 * 6 = 36.
Hence the maximum runs = 33 * 49 + 36 = 1653

death match. They being better shooter than you readily accept your challenge. But they
don't want to waste bullets and thus lay down a certain rules that are accepted by you as
well. Here are the rules:

1) Everyone shoot in a given order till only one is left.

2) Everyone shoot only once when his turn arrive.
3) If any one of you is injured, the other two will finish him off together.
4) The worst shooter gets to shoot first (which is you) and the best one shoots at the last.

Now, what tactics will you use if you know that you hit every third shot of yours, Jack hits
every second shot and Leo hits every shot?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The best thing for you will be to shoot your first shot in air.

If you try to shoot at Jack and hits him by chance, Leo always hits on the target and you are dead.

If you choose to shoot at Leo and hits him by chance, then there is a fifty percent chance that Jack
will hit you.

If you shoot in air, the next turn is of Jack and he knows that Leo is a better shooter which means that
he will shoot at him. If he misses, he is definitely dead as Leo will shoot on him coz he shot at him.
The next turn will be yours and you stand a 1/3rd chance of hitting him. Also if, he is able to hit Leo.
The next chance is yours again and you can try the 1/3rd probability of hitting over Jack.

This is the best situation that you can face. At every other possible way, you will face a worse

3rd person says: At least three of the statements are incorrect.
4th person says: At least four of the statements are incorrect.

100th person says: At least a hundred of the statements are incorrect.

Now analyze all the statements and find out how many of them are incorrect and how many
are true?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The 100th statement for sure is incorrect because it says that at least 100 of the statements are
incorrect.

Suppose if that is correct, then 100 statements cannot be true.

This suggests that the 100th statement is incorrect and that the first statement is true.

Similarly 99 statements cannot be true because if they were true, then two statements would become
correct i.e. the 1st and the 99th.
But the 99th statement says that at least 99 are incorrect.
This suggests that the 99th statement is incorrect and that 2ndone is true.

If we keep analyzing is the same way till the end, we will find out that only the first fifty statements
are true and all the remaining ones are incorrect.

of…..' will give form 'TWO' and the third sentence 'The Hardest Riddle Ever Event.' Will form THREE.
Thus the final sentence must form FOUR. There is only one candidate who can suffice with the first
two letter and he is Fred Odea. The final sentence of the mastermind must be, 'Fred Odea: Ultimate

A competitive exam was held in which five students took part namely Billy, Gerry, Clark,
Peeta and Jonathan. In this exam, they had to answer five questions each out of which,
three had multiple choices as a, b or c and two were simple true and false questions. The
five of them gave different answers to the questions and the details are as given below.

Name 1 2 3 4 5

Gerry c b True True False

Billy c c True True True

Clark a c False True True

Peeta b a True True False

Jonathan a b True False True

None of the two students gave the same number of correct answers. Can you find out the
correct answers to the question? Also, calculate the individual score of all the five guys.
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
It has been clearly stated that none of the two students gave same number of correct answers which
leads us to two different possibilities of correct answers:
Either (1 + 2 +3 + 4 + 5 = 15) or (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 10) stands true.

After analyzing the question, the maximum number of correct answers possible with the answers
Gerry, Billy, Clark, Peeta and Jonathan gave:
Question 1 = 2 (b or c)
Question 2 = 2 (b or c)
Question 3= 4 (True)
Question 4 = 4 (True)
Question 5 = 3 (True)

Let us first assume with the maximum number of correct answers possible according to our data which
are 15 (2+2+4+4+3). According to it, Billy must have given all correct answers as he was the only
one who answered True for questions 3, 4 and 5. But in that case, Gerry and Clark must have given
exactly three correct answers. Furthermore, Peeta and Jonathan must have given two correct
answers. Therefore none of them got all the five correct answers which is wrong according to what we
have analyzed.

Thus we move on to our next assumption according to which, the total number of correct answers are
10 (0+1+2+3+4). Now we must acknowledge that Questions 3 as well as Question 4 cannot be False
as it will mean that the number of correct answers would not be 10. So the students giving wrong
answers cannot be Gerry, Billy and Peeta.

Assume that Jonathan got all wrong, it will suggest that Gerry, Clark and Peeta each would have at
least two correct answers. Then, Billy would have to be the person with only one correct answer and in
that situation, the correct answers for questions 1 and 2 would be a and a respectively. Since that is
not possible as then the total number of correct answers would be 1 (a) + 1 (a) + 1 (False) + 4 (True)
+ 2 (Flase) = 9.

Thus it must be Clark who has given all wrong answers. The correct answers are then b, a, True, False
and False. Also, the scores are Clark (0), Billy (1), Gerry (2), Jonathan (3) and Peeta (4).

A man of faith visits the holy land where three temple are erected in a row offering a surreal
divinity to the place. Awestruck at the sight of the magnificent temples, he visits the first
temple where he finds that the number of flowers in his basket increases to double the
number as soon as he sets his foot inside the temple. Astonished by the miracle he is
completely happy and seeks it as a blessing of his god. He offers a few flowers to the stone
idol of god and moves out.

Then he visits the second temple, where the same miracle happens again. The number of
flowers in his basket again double up in number. With a smile on his face, he offers a few of
flowers to the stone idol again and walks out after praying.

The moment he enters the third temple, the number of flowers increases to double again.
Now he feels entirely blessed. He offers all the flowers at the feet of the stone idol and
walks out in a moment of bliss.

When he walks out, he has no remaining flowers with him. He offered equal number of
flowers at each of the temple. What is the minimum number of flowers he had before
entering the first temple? How many flowers did he offer at each temple?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Let m be initial number of flowers and n be the flowers offered at each temple by the man.
Initial flowers = m
After stepping into the first temple = 2m
Flowers offered at the first temple = n
Remaining flowers = 2m – n

After stepping into the second temple = 4m – 2n

Flowers offered at the second temple = n
Remaining flowers = 2m – n

After stepping into the third temple = 8m – 6n

Flowers offered at the third temple = n
Remaining flowers = 8m – 7n

Now as per the question (8m – 7n) must be equal to 0.

i.e. 8m – 7 n = 0
or 8m = 7y

Now the least numbers required to solve this equation are 7 and 8 for m and n respectively.

Thus m = 7; n = 8
Which means, the man had 7 flowers in the beginning and he offered 8 flowers at each temple.

You are giving an intelligence test. In that, you are provided by the code - MOD OAT AIM
DUE TIE

You know that only one word from this code is true and the rest ones are only put in to
make the task difficult for you. To understand, you are provided with a clue – If you are told
any one of the characters of the code word, you can find out the word easily.

Can you deduce the actual code word from the entire code?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The code word is TIE.

Let us assume that the word is MOD. Now if you are told one character of this word, you would not be
able to identify the number of vowels in the word. For example if you are told M, then the word can be
MOD or AIM but they both have different number of vowels. If you are told about O, then there are
two words MOD and OAT which again have different number of vowels. If you are told about D, there
are two words again MOD and DUE which have different numbers of vowels again.

In such manner, all the words that have M, O or D in them can be excluded. Then only word that
remains is TIE.
If you are told about T, there are two words OAT and TIE which both have two vowels.
If you are told about I, there are two words AIM and TIE which both have two vowels.
If you are told about E, there are two words DUE and TIE which both have two vowels.

Thus TIE is the code word.

The competition was held on 11 November 2013. The logic is simple. In America, the dates are
mentioned as Month/Day/Year and in Britain, dates are written as Day/Month/Year. But on 11
November 2013, the date and month will be the same. And thus both will write in the same manner
i.e. 11/11/2013. If it would have been any other date, the evaluators would have been able to identify
it.
Lateral Thinking Puzzles #69 - Hard Logic Puzzle

A great meeting is held by a great logician where all the other logicians are called upon. The
master logician takes them in a room and makes them sit in circle. A hat is placed on each
of their heads. Now all of them can see the color of hats others are wearing but can’t see his
own. They are told that there different colors of hats.

The master logician explains that a bell will be rung at regular intervals and the moment
when a logician knows the color of his hat, he will leave on the next bell. If anyone leaves at
the wrong bell, he will be disqualified and sent home.

All of them are assured of one thing that the puzzle will not be impossible for anyone of
them. How will they manage the situation?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The first step that they will take will be a leap of logic. What it means is that they will deduce that
every color must appear twice at least. Why? Because the master logician has assured them that the
puzzle will not be impossible for anyone of them. And if a color appears only once in the circle, the
person wearing it will have no clue about that color which will not be fair for him.

Then the logicians will follow the same and look for all the colors of hats in the circle. If one of them
sees a color just once, he can safely assume that he is also wearing the hat of the same color as by
leap of logic, no color can appear just once. Thus when the bell is rung, he will leave.

In the similar fashion, if anyone sees another color just once, he can determine that he is wearing the
hat of the same color and will leave when the bell rings or will be disqualified and sent home.
Unvaryingly, if a color is seen twice, they will be eliminated after the first bell. Hence, there must be
at least three hats of any of the remaining color.

Assume that you are sitting in the circle and you don’t see a color once but see it twice. Then if they
were the only two hats of the same color, the logicians must have left at the first bell already. But
they did not. Which means that there are three hats of that color and you are wearing one. Thus you
will leave after the second bell.

Three college toppers are summoned by the inspecting faculty. To identify the best from
them, the faculty takes them into a room and places one hat on each of their heads. Now all
of them can see the hats on other’s heads but can’t see his own. There are two colored hats
– green and red.

Now the faculty announces that he had made sure that the competition is extremely fair to
all three of them. He also gives them a hint that at least one of them is wearing a red hat.
Now the first one who is able to deduce his own hat color will be awarded the most
intelligent student of all award. After a few minutes, one of them raises his hand and is able
to deduce the color correctly.

How?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
There are two things to keep in mind:
Firstly there is at least one red hat. (There can be two or three as well).
Secondly the competition is fair for everyone.

Thus if there is only one red hat, that person will see two green hats on other heads and will be able
to deduce his own color as red. However the other students will see one red and one green hat and
can never be sure. In such manner, the competition will prove to be partial for one student.

Suppose if there are two red hats. Then the students who are wearing red hats will see one red and
one green hat on others. Now they must have deduced that there can’t be just one red hat. Thus they
will know that they are also wearing a red hat. But the one who is wearing a green hat will see two
red hats and can never be sure of his own color. In this case as well, the competition will not be fair.

Thus the only possible and fair means is if all of them are wearing a red hat. The one who is able to
deduce the situation first, will raise his hand and will tell the correct answer.

A couple had to take shelter in a hotel for they could not proceed their journey in the rain.
Having nothing to do at all, they started playing cards. Suddenly there was a short circuit
and the lights went off. The husband inverted the position of 15 cards in the deck (52 cards
normal deck) and shuffled the deck.

Now he asked his wife to divide the deck into two different piles which may not be equal but
both of them should have equal number of cards facing up. There was no source of light in
the room and the wife was unable to see the cards.

For a certain amount of time, she thought and then divided the cards in two piles. To the
husband’s astonishment, both of the piles had equal number of cards facing up.

How did she do it?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The answer is very simple. All she had to do is take the fifteen cards from the top and reverse them.
This would make another pile out of that and there will be two piles - one of 15 cards and one of 37
cards. Also both of them will have the same number of inverted cards.

Just think about it and if the mathematical explanation will help you understand better, here it is.
Assume that there were p inverted cards initially in the top 15 cards. Then the remaining 37 cards will
hold 15-p inverted cards.
Now when she reverses the 15 cards on the top, the number of inverted cards will become 15-p and
thus the number of inverted cards in both of the piles will become same.

This one is a bit of tricky river crossing puzzle than you might have solved till now. We have
a whole family out on a picnic on one side of the river. The family includes Mother and
Father, two sons, two daughters, a maid and a dog. The bridge broke down and all they
have is a boat that can take them towards the other side of the river. But there is a
condition with the boat. It can hold just two persons at one time (count the dog as one
person).

No it does not limit to that and there are other complications. The dog can’t be left without
the maid or it will bite the family members. The father can’t be left with daughters without
the mother and in the same manner, the mother can’t be left alone with the sons without
the father. Also an adult is needed to drive the boat and it can’t drive by itself.
How will all of them reach the other side of the river?

Maid and dog go first and maid returns back

X = mother, first daughter, second daughter, father, first son, second son and maid
Y = dog

Maid and first son go and maid returns with dog

X = mother, first daughter, second daughter, father, second son, maid and dog
Y = first son

Father and second son go and father returns back

X = mother, first daughter, second daughter, father, maid and dog
Y = first son and second son

Mother and father go and mother comes back

X = mother, first daughter, second daughter, maid and dog
Y = father, first son and second son

Maid and Dog go and Father returns back

X = mother, first daughter, second daughter and father
Y = first son, second son, maid and dog

Father and Mother go and mother comes back

X = mother, first daughter and second daughter
Y = father, first son, second son, maid and dog

Mother and first daughter go and maid comes back with dog
X = second daughter, maid and dog
Y = mother, first daughter, father, first son and second son

The girl was born on 29 February. Thus her birthday came once in four years only while her sister was
born on a normal day and celebrated her birthday every year. Thus the girl had a chance of depositing
money only 10 times in 4 years through which she collected $2500 while her sister took $50 from the

direction in a tunnel. A supersonic bee is left in the tunnel which can fly at a speed of 1000
mph. The tunnel is 200 miles long. When the trains start running on a constant speed of
100 mph, the supersonic bee starts flying from one train towards the other. As soon as the
bee reaches the second train, it starts flying back towards the first train.

If the bee keeps flying to and fro in the tunnel till the trains collide, how much distance will
it have covered in total?

Solution:
A typical way will be to start thinking about summing up the distance that the bee will travel but that
will be quite a tedious task. How about we offer you a much easy solution?

The tunnel is 200 miles long and the trains are running at as peed of 100 mph which means that they
will collide exactly at the center of the tunnel and seeking their speed, they will collide after an hour.
Now consider the bee which is flying at a speed of 1000 mph and will keep flying till the train collides.
As calculated, it will keep flying for an hour which means the distance that it will cover is 1000 miles.

The question is simple, you have to find out who did it? However the way to the solution
might be tricky and confusing. Just remember that only one of the statement is true and
rest three are false.

1. Ms. Rihanna: 'Ms. Britney did it.'

2. Ms. Britney: 'Ms. Rihanna did it.'
3. Ms. Gwyneth: 'Ms. Britney’s telling the truth.'
4. Ms. Yoon: 'Ms. Gwyneth’s not lying.'
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Ms. Britney did it.

We will take up every person and analyze the statements over all of them one by one.

Case 1: Ms. Britney did it, then

Statement 1 => true
Statement 2 => false (as Rihanna did not do it)
Statement 3 => false (as Ms. Britney is lying)
Statement 4 => false (as Ms. Gwyneth is lying)
Our first guess itself was right but let us confirm our analysis by analyzing the statements over others.

Case 2: Ms. Rihanna did it, then

Statement 1 => false (as Ms. Britney did not do it)
Statement 2 => true
Statement 3 => true (as Ms. Britney is not lying)
As per the conditions, three statements had to be wrong but here, we have two statements right
which clearly contradict the condition.

Case 3: Ms. Gwyneth did it, then

Statement 1 => false (as Ms. Britney did not do it)
Statement 2 => false (as Ms. Rihanna did not do it)
Statement 3 => false (as Ms. Britney is lying)
Statement 4 => false (as Ms. Gwyneth is lying)
She did not do it as all the statements are false.

Case 4: Ms. Yoon did it, then

Statement 1 => false (as Ms. Britney did not do it)
Statement 2 => false (as Ms. Rihanna did not do it)
Statement 3 => false (as Ms. Britney is lying)
Statement 4 => false (as Ms. Gwyneth is lying)
All four statements are false in her case as well thus she did not do it.

Therefore we have proved that Ms. Britney did it.

There are 100 doors. 100 strangers have been gathered in the adjacent room. The first one
goes and opens every door. The second one goes and shuts down all the even numbered
doors – second, fourth, sixth... and so on. The third one goes and reverses the current
position of every third door (third, sixth, ninth… and so on.) i.e. if the door is open, he shuts
it and if the door is shut, he switches opens it. All the 100 strangers progresses in the
similar fashion.

After the last person has done what he wanted, which doors will be left open and which
ones will be shut at the end?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Think deeply about the door number 56, people will visit it for every divisor it has. So 56 has 1 & 56, 2
& 28, 4 & 14, 7 & 8. So on pass 1, the 1st person will open the door; pass 2, 2nd one will close it;
pass 4, open; pass 7, close; pass 8, open; pass 14, close; pass 28, open; pass 56, close.
Thus we can say that the door will just end up back in its original state for each pair of divisor. But
what about the cases in which the pair of divisor has analogous number for example door number 16?
16 has the divisors 1 & 16, 2 & 8, 4&4. But 4 is recurrent because 16 is a perfect square, so you will
only visit door number 16, on pass 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16… leaving it open at the end. So only perfect
square doors will remain open at the end.

How much was her check amount ?

Solution:
The check was for dollars 31.63.

The bank teller gave her dollars 63.31

She spent .05, and then she had dollars 63.26, which is twice the check.

Let x be the dollars of the check, and y be the cent.

The check was for 100x + y cent

He was given 100y + x cent

Also
100y + x - 5 = 2(100x + y)
Expanding this out and rearranging, we find:
98y = 199x + 5

or 199x ≡ -5 (mod 98)

or 98*2*x + 3x ≡ -5 (mod 98)
3x ≡ -5 ≡ 93 (mod 98)
this quickly leads to x = 31

tread. That happens when N=6090, which is when 5*N (the total miles driven) is 30,450.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #95 - Hard Logical Puzzle

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

You are the ruler of a medieval empire and you are about to have a celebration tomorrow.
The celebration is the most important party you have ever hosted. You've got 1000 bottles
of wine you were planning to open for the celebration, but you find out that one of them is
poisoned.

The poison exhibits no symptoms until death. Death occurs within ten to twenty hours after
consuming even the minutest amount of poison.

You have over a thousand slaves at your disposal and just under 24 hours to determine
which single bottle is poisoned.

You have a handful of prisoners about to be executed, and it would mar your celebration to
have anyone else killed.

What is the smallest number of prisoners you must have to drink from the bottles to be
absolutely sure to find the poisoned bottle within 24 hours?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
10 prisoners must sample the wine. Bonus points if you worked out a way to ensure than no more
than 8 prisoners die.

Number all bottles using binary digits. Assign each prisoner to one of the binary flags. Prisoners must
take a sip from each bottle where their binary flag is set.
Here is how you would find one poisoned bottle out of eight total bottles of wine.

Bottle 1 Bottle 2 Bottle 3 Bottle 4 Bottle 5 Bottle 6 Bottle 7 Bottle 8

Prisoner A X X X X
Prisoner B X X X X
Prisoner C X X X X
In the above example, if all prisoners die, bottle 8 is bad. If none die, bottle 1 is bad. If A & B dies,
bottle 4 is bad.

With ten people there are 1024 unique combination so you could test up to 1024 bottles of wine.

Each of the ten prisoners will take a small sip from about 500 bottles. Each sip should take no longer
than 30 seconds and should be a very small amount. Small sips not only leave more wine for guests.
Small sips also avoid death by alcohol poisoning. As long as each prisoner is administered about a
milliliter from each bottle, they will only consume the equivalent of about one bottle of wine each.

Each prisoner will have at least a fifty percent chance of living. There is only one binary combination
where all prisoners must sip from the wine. If there are ten prisoners then there are ten more
combination where all but one prisoner must sip from the wine. By avoiding these two types of
combination you can ensure no more than 8 prisoners die.

One viewer felt that this solution was in flagrant contempt of restaurant etiquette. The emperor paid
for this wine, so there should be no need to prove to the guests that wine is the same as the label. I
am not even sure if ancient wine even came with labels affixed. However, it is true that after leaving
the wine open for a day, that this medieval wine will taste more like vinegar than it ever did. C'est la
vie.

If you add the combinations: 3 + 3 + 1 = 7, you get the least number of pairs you must check.
Lateral Thinking Puzzles #99 - Difficult Logic Question

At a fast food outlet, you order chicken wings in boxes of 6, 9 and 20. Then, what is the
largest number of wings that is not possible to get if you purchase some combination of
boxes?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
43

Explanation:
Here is the thing. You can buy any number of wings that can be divided evenly by three except for
three by using the combinations of boxes of 6 and boxes of 9. (You must use at most the box of 9 and
then multiple boxes of 6). Now, if there is a number that can't be divided by 3, use a box of 20. After
purchasing the box of 20, if the number that remains is divisible by 3, then you are good to go. On the
other hand if it is not, you will have to use a second box of 20. And the remaining number will
definitely be divisible by 3.

Thus if we calculate the largest number that can't be bought is the one that requires two 20 pieces
boxes before the remainder can be thinned down to a number divisible by 3. We know that 3 is the
number that can't be purchased and can evenly be divisible, the largest possible number of wings that
can't be bought are:
3 + 20 + 20 = 43.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #100 - Hard River Crossing Puzzle

Difficulty Level Popularity Quotient

There are two villages separated with a river. Each day, four people cross the river through
a bridge to work on the other side and earn for their families. On one night when they were
returning from work, they noticed that the bridge was about to collapse. Now all of them
wanted to cross the bridge before it collapsed as no one wanted to be stuck on that end
without their families.

They had just one torch with them and since it was the night time, they could not see
without it. The bridge had become weak and it could only accommodate two people at a
time. It was going to collapse in just 17 minutes.

The four people took different times to cross the bridge. First one took only a minute,
second one took 2 minutes, third one took 5 minutes and the last one took 10 minutes.

How would all of them have managed to cross the bridge in time?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Let us denote the four people with A, B, C and D.
A takes 1 minute to cross, B takes 2, C takes 5 and D takes 10.

A and B cross first spending 2 minutes.

A comes back with torch taking 1 minute.
C and D cross taking 10 minutes.
B comes back with torch taking 2 minutes.
Finally, A and B cross the bridge taking 2 minutes.

2 + 1 + 10 + 2 + 2 = 17 minutes

Thus, this is the way they all managed to cross that bridge that night.

If three friends want to know the average of their salaries, how can they know it without
disclosing their actually salary to the other ones?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Assume that P, Q and R are the three friends. Now P is earning X amount, Q is earning Y amount and
R is earning Z amount.

First, P will add his salary to a random amount A and will tell the combined sum to Q.
X+A

Now, Q will add his salary and a random amount B to the amount passed by P. He will then pass it to
R.
X+A+Y+B

Now R will add his salary and a random amount C to the total amount passed by Q.
X + A + Y + B + Z + C.

Now, R will pass this amount back to P. P will deduct the random amount added by him in the
beginning.
X+Y+B+Z+C

He will now pass this amount to Q who will subtract the random amount he added in his turn.
X+Y+Z+C

He will pass this amount to R who will deduct his random amount.
X+Y+Z
Now this is the total sum of their salaries. R will tell it to P and Q and then each of them can find the
average of their salaries by dividing the total amount with 3.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles #102 - Hard Ipl Cricket Brain Teaser

In a cricket tournament, there are 9 teams that are participating. According to the rules,
each of the team will get to play two matches with every other teams. The top qualified four
teams will then move forward for the playoffs.

Can you calculate the minimum number of matches to be won by a team to ensure a place
in the playoffs?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Let us first calculate the total number of matches that will be placed:
9C2 * 2
= 9! / (2!7!) * 2
=8*9
= 72
Therefore, every team will play 16 matches.

Let us now glance over the cases that are possible.

Case 1:
Let us say that Team A, Team B and Team C wins 14 matches each (they lose 1 match each from the
other two teams), then the Team D can win only (16 - 3 * 2) = 10 matches.

Case 2:
Suppose that, the top 4 teams win 13 matches each.
Team A will win 13 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team B, Team C and Team D.
Team B will win 13 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team C and Team D.
Team C will win 13 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team B and Team D.
Team D will win 13 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team B and Team C.

If this case actually happens, then the Team E will be able to win 8 matches at maximum as Team A,
Team B, Team C and Team D will win all the matches played by E.

Case 3:
Suppose that, the top 5 teams win 12 matches each.
Team A will win 12 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team B, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team B will win 12 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team C, Team D and Team E.
Team C will win 12 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team B, Team D and Team E.
Team D will win 12 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team E.
Team E will win 12 matches and will lose 3 matches from Team A, Team B, Team C and Team D.

If this case actually happens, Team E will win 12 matches but it still won't be able to get into the
playoffs assuming that it has the lowest run rate among all.

This implies that from case 2, it is evident that a team must win 13 matches at the least to confirm its
position in the playoffs.

There is an island where people are not allowed to communicate with each other. There are
total 200 people out of which, 100 have green eyes while 100 have black eyes. But no one
knows their own eyes color as there is no mirror available on the island. Also, they are not
aware of how many people with n colored eyes are there. They don't even know that there
are only two color set of eyes. But they can observe and analyze other people's eyes.

There is a catch to the things. It is a rule that if anybody is able to deduce the color of his
own eyes and he is right, he will be free and can leave the island.
On a certain day, an outsider visits the island and tells the people that he has seen someone
with green eyes. What will happen now?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
This puzzle is quite similar to the cheating husbands puzzle. The same logic applies here.

After the announcement, if there is only one person with green eyes, he will observe everyone and will
come to the conclusion that he himself has green eyes.

If two persons have green eyes, they will see everyone and find out that there is one person with
green eyes. So they will expect him to leave. But if no one leaves on that day, on the next day both of
them will understand that they both have green eyes and will leave the island.

Thus if you keep going like this or apply the rules of induction, you will find that since there are 100
green eyed people on that island, all of them will leave the island on the 100th day after the
announcement.

A man walks into a movie theater. Hi sits in the movie hall impatiently as the movie
progresses. Suddenly in a shot, he smiles and watch the shot with his eyes glued to the
screen curiously. But moments later he seems terrified. He rushes out of the movie hall and
run towards a bridge. Upon reaching the bridge, he climbs over and jumps in the river
committing suicide.

Why did he do it?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
It is a lateral thinking puzzle and thus it's not about anything logical.

The man who walked in the movie theater was once a father of twin brothers. Despite of the fact that
they were twins, their nature was starkly opposite. While David was quite peaceful and generous,
Robin was very rude and violent.

On a certain day, David came running to the man and told him that Robin had killed a man. The man
rushed to the crime scene with his son and saw that the man was dead with Robin near the body. He
started fighting with Robin and accidentally killed him. The police arrested the man and he was sent to
prison for ten years. While in his first month at the prison, he received a letter from his son which said
that he was not interested in meeting him ever and that he can't forgive his father for what he did to
his brother.
After ten years, he was released and came out of the prison only to know that his son was now a
small time movie star and his latest movie was running in a nearby theater. While watching the
movie, he smiled when he saw his son David on screen. But the next moment, the camera shifted on
his arm where he saw a birthmark that belonged to Robin. He realized that on that day the one who
came to him was not David but Robin and he actually killed David.

Filled with a grief and shock he decided to take his own life. He would have never forgiven himself for
what he did to his son David.

The father takes one minute to go through till the end, the mother takes two, the son takes
four and the daughter takes five. The cave and tunnel will explode in twelve minutes. Can
they make it to the other end in that time frame?

PS: Keep in mind that when two people are moving, the total time taken will be as per the
slower one.
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
12 minutes

Explanation:
Yes, surely they can all make it out of the cave.

First, father and mother will go. Time taken = 2 minutes.

Father comes back. Time taken = 2 + 1 = 3 minutes.
Both children go. Time taken = 3 + 5 = 8 minutes.
Mother comes back. Time taken = 8 + 2 = 10 minutes.
Mother and Father go. Time taken = 10 + 2 = 12 minutes.

Thus in 12 minutes, all of them will be out of the cave through the tunnel.

Four servants of the king Octopus were conversing on a particular celebration night. They
said the following things:
The Orange one said, “In total, we have 28 legs.”
The Pink one said, “In total, we have 28 legs.”
The Blue one said, “In total, we have 28 legs.”
The Green one said, “In total, we have 28 legs.”

Now there is one thing particular about the servants. All of the servants have either 6 or 7
or 8 legs. Also, the ones with seven legs always lie while the ones with 6 or 8 legs are
always truthful.

By reading the conversation, and with the given facts, can you find out the color of the
servant who is telling the truth?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
The Pink servant is the truthful one.

In order to prove the same, let us take all of them one by one assuming that the selected one is
telling the truth. This is because all of them are disagreeing with each other which means that three
servants are lying while one is telling the truth.

Assume that the Orange servant is the truthful one. Under this condition, the orange one is having
either 6 or 8 legs. And each of the other octopus is lying will then have 7 legs. Under this condition,
the total number of legs will be 6 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 27 legs or 8 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 29 legs. But the Orange
servant said that they have 28 legs all together. Thus he is lying.

Now if we simply follow the same logic with all other servants as well, we will come up to the
conclusion that only the Pink servant is truthful.

There is a box in which there are 20 black chocolates and 16 white chocolates. You take out
two chocolates at one time. If both are of same type, you add a black chocolate otherwise
you add a white chocolate.

You keep repeating like this till there is only one chocolate left in the box. Which type of
chocolate will be left in the last?

Also, suppose you begin the same process with 100 black and 93 white chocolates. Which
chocolate will be left at last then?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Let us solve this problem with variables to find the general nature. Let us assume that there are x
black chocolates and y white chocolates. Three things can happen when you take out two chocolates.
1) You take out two black chocolates.
Then, you will be replacing one black chocolate and so the jar will have x+1 black chocolates and y-2
white chocolates.
2) You take out two white chocolates.
Then, you will be replacing 1 black chocolate and so the jar will have x-1 black chocolates and y white
chocolates.
3) You take out 1 black chocolate and 1 white chocolate. Then, you will be replacing a white chocolate
and so the jar will have x-1 black chocolates and y white chocolates.
Thus at every step, you are wither removing a black chocolate or replacing two white chocolates by
one black chocolate irreversibly till there is just one chocolate left. Therefore each white chocolate is
equivalent to two black chocolates.

This, if the number of white chocolates are odd in number, the last one remaining will be white
chocolate and if the number of white chocolates are even in number, the last one remaining will be
black chocolate.

There is a kingdom where all the women know about the fidelity of every man of the
kingdom except that of her own husband. Also none of the women tell other women about
it. The queen of the kingdom declares that unfaithful men have been identified by her. She
declares that any woman who knows that her husband is unfaithful can shoot him in the
midnight of the following day when she discovers it.

How can the women manage it ?

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Suppose if there is just one unfaithful husband, then his wife will kill her husband as she must be
knowing that all other men are faithful but the queen declared that one of them all is unfaithful.

If there are two unfaithful husbands, then both their wives will believe there is just one unfaithful
husband, that too the other one whom she knows. Thus both of them will expect the above case to
happen at midnight. But when no one is shot, they will realize that there are two unfaithful husbands
and since they know about everyone, they will know that the other unfaithful man is their own
husband on the next day.

If there are three unfaithful husbands, each of their wives will be knowing about two other unfaithful
men so they will be expecting the above case and will be waiting for the gunshots on the second day.
When that does not happens, they will realize that there are more than two and since they all will
know about the rest, they will realize that their own husband is unfaithful and they will kill him on the
third day.

Thus if we talk about general terms and suppose that there are n unfaithful husbands, their wives will
believe that there is n-1 unfaithful husbands and will expect the gunshot on n-1 day. When they don’t
hear that, they will realize their own husband is the nth.

has 987,654 hairs. The number of citizens are more than the number of hairs on the head
of any one citizen.

Can you find out the largest possible citizens of the town?
View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
987,654

Let us assume with a smaller number and then increase the number by extrapolating. If there are two
citizens, the number of hairs on their heads will be zero and one. Therefore for ‘n’ number of citizens,
the hair distribution will range from 0 to (n-1).

If you take up a case of a number greater than 987,654 let’s say 987,655; and consider the fact that
none of the citizens have 987,654 hairs and they must be having different number of hairs, one must
be having more than 987,654 hairs which is bluntly violating the fact of the town that there are more
citizens than the hairs on any individual.

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
From left to right
#1 Mr. Reed Richard – Blue Marbles
#2 Ms. Sue Storm – Red Marbles
#3 Mr. Johnny Storm – White Marbles
#4 Mr. Ben Grimm – Green Marbles.

Let us label the houses from left to right as #1, #2, #3, #4. Now let us split the hints in different
category.
a) Mr. Reed Richard’s house is to the left of the green marbles one
b) The third one is made of white marbles
c) Ms. Sue Storm owns a red marbles house
d) Mr. Johnny Storm does not live on either ends
e) Mr. Johnny Storm lives right of the blue marbles house
f) Mr. Ben Grimm lives in the fourth house
g) The first house is not made up of red marbles

By seeking all the (g) and (b), we are sure that the #1 is not made up of red marbles and nor is the
#3. Now with (f) we know that Mr. Ben Grimm lives in #4 made up of green marbles and keeping in
mind (c) #2 must be made of Red Marbles and Ms. Sue Storm lives there. Now moving to the hint (d)
Mr. Johnny Storm must be living in #3 and adding up with hint (b), it must be made from white
marbles. Now by hint (a) #4 must be made up of green marbles (or Mr. Reed Richard’s house can’t be
on its left). Also by (f) Mr. Ben Grimm lives there. All of it leaves Mr. Reed Richards living in #1 with
blue marbles construction.

You have 100 kilograms of gpuzzles apples, which are 99 percent water by weight.

View Answer Work Space Discuss
Answer & Explanation
Solution:
Perhaps surprisingly, the apples now weigh 50 kilograms. The sack of apples originally weighed 100
kilograms, and 1 percent of its weight, or 1 pound, was non-water. If that 1 pound now makes up 2
percent of the total weight, then the total weight must be 50 kilograms.
