Location: Brunskill School Time: 8:50-9:45am

Activity: Belly Kickball

Movement Skills and Concepts:

 Throwing
 Catching
 Kicking
 Locomotion
 Spatial awareness

Equipment Needed:
 Gym
 3 sets of pinnies (9 per set) - match coloured shirts if not enough pinnies
 1 rubber ball
 Mats for bases
 Hula hoop (for home base)

Safety:
 Sufficient traction

Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn and establish spatial awareness and effective teamwork. They will
also learn components of striking and fielding games. They will continue to progress
their knowledge of kicking, throwing, and catching cues and skills.
2. Participants will discover what it means to work as a team and how to become a good
teammate.
3. Participants will develop kicking, throwing, and catching skills in a game setting.

Introduction (3 minutes - Jenn):

 Ask if they remember our names? Introduce again
 NEW STOP signal! - hands on top that means stop!
o When I put my hands on my head and say “hands on top” you have to stop what you
are doing, put your hands on your head, and say “that means stop” – Let’s practice!
 What we are going to do - Striking/ Fielding
 What is a Striking/fielding game? 3 components:
o Players score points by striking an object and running to designated playing areas
o Prevent opponents from scoring by retrieving the object and returning it to stop the
play.
o Striking/fielding games are set in a confined space and typically have a designated
offense and defense
 So can you guys think of any games that would be examples of striking and fielding?
Softball, baseball, cricket, kickball.
 Why we are going to do it - By playing these games, participants will learn the key skills
and tactics for games such as softball, baseball, cricket, kickball.

We are going to warm you up with a game called Bump Tag.

Warm Up - (15 minutes - Hillary & Angela):

 Bump Tag (Hillary)
o Have kids pair up.
o Choose 3 pairs to be running – one student is "it" and other is chased
o Have the pairs spread out and lie down.
o While being chased, the runner can go up to another pair, and "bump" the person
on the opposite side. The other person then is released from that pair, and
becomes the new person being chased.
o For example, IT is chasing RUNNER and RUNNER goes up to one of the sides
of the pairs, and bumps PAIR 1. PAIR 2, now becomes the person chased by IT.
The original RUNNER is now buddied up with PAIR 1.
o If the IT tags the RUNNER, they immediately switch roles, and the original
runner now tries to catch the original "it."
o Bumped players cannot lay down in the same set of pairs that they came from.
 The Number Game (Angela)
o Students spread out in the playing area.
o Give maybe 20-30 seconds for them to just run around and around (or skip, hop,
gallop, spin, etc).
o When the time is right, the teacher yells out a number (example, “SIX!”) and then
the students must quickly form groups of 6 (or whatever number is called).
o Any players who didn’t make a group must complete 6 jumping jacks, squats,
push ups, tuck jumps, highfives, sit ups, footfive, burpees, or exercise of choice.
o They only have 3 seconds to get into the groups

Reminder of cues (2 minutes - Jenn):

 Kicking:
o Plant non-kicking foot
o Eye on the ball
o Follow through with leg
 Catching:
o Make a target
o Eye on the ball
o Absorb the ball
 Throwing:
o Aim with non-throwing arm
o Step with opposite leg
o Follow through
Activity - Belly Kickball (20 minutes - Nakia and Jenn):
Activity Set Up: (what organization is needed for equipment, people etc):
 Divide participants into 3 equal teams
 2 teams will be field, and 1 team will be kicking (this will allow for more kicking
opportunities)
 Place large mats like bases and a hula hoop for home plate

Activity Instructions:
1. A teacher will pitch to a batter; the batter must kick the ball.
2. When batters kick, they must run the bases and “belly-flop” onto the crash mats to be
safe. If they hit a double or farther, they must belly-flop onto first base, roll, run to
second, belly-flop onto it, run to third etc.
3. A caught fly ball means the kicker is out. If the ball bounces off a wall or basketball net
and is caught, it doesn't count as an out.
4. You can also get players out (same rules as baseball) by getting the ball to the base before
the kicker or tagging the player before they get to the base
5. Players stop running when the pitcher is holding the ball.
6. Switch fielding and kicking when everyone on the offensive team has kicked
7. Kicked balls that hit the back wall above the blue line count as a home run
8. As the fielding team, if you have the ball you cannot run so you will need to PASS the
ball to your team mates

Discussion Points:
 How do you decide where to send the ball to score the maximum points
 Describe where and how your body can be positioned to be successful at fielding the ball.

Adaptations:
To maximize the challenge and the fun, participants could identify their own ways to increase or
decrease the challenge.
 To decrease the challenge, participants could:
o The ball has to be placed in a certain area instead of tagging
o Change to a larger ball to make kicking easier
 To increase the challenge, participants could:
o Pass the ball to a certain number of players before tagging a runner
o Change the ball to a smaller object

Skill Development:
