Equipment Needed:
Gym
3 sets of pinnies (9 per set) - match coloured shirts if not enough pinnies
1 rubber ball
Mats for bases
Hula hoop (for home base)
Safety:
Sufficient traction
Be aware of personal space
NO BODY CONTACT
No large jewellery (watches)
Appropriate shoes
Boundary a safe distance from walls
Outcomes:
1. Participants will learn and establish spatial awareness and effective teamwork. They will
also learn components of striking and fielding games. They will continue to progress
their knowledge of kicking, throwing, and catching cues and skills.
2. Participants will discover what it means to work as a team and how to become a good
teammate.
3. Participants will develop kicking, throwing, and catching skills in a game setting.
Activity Instructions:
1. A teacher will pitch to a batter; the batter must kick the ball.
2. When batters kick, they must run the bases and “belly-flop” onto the crash mats to be
safe. If they hit a double or farther, they must belly-flop onto first base, roll, run to
second, belly-flop onto it, run to third etc.
3. A caught fly ball means the kicker is out. If the ball bounces off a wall or basketball net
and is caught, it doesn't count as an out.
4. You can also get players out (same rules as baseball) by getting the ball to the base before
the kicker or tagging the player before they get to the base
5. Players stop running when the pitcher is holding the ball.
6. Switch fielding and kicking when everyone on the offensive team has kicked
7. Kicked balls that hit the back wall above the blue line count as a home run
8. As the fielding team, if you have the ball you cannot run so you will need to PASS the
ball to your team mates
Discussion Points:
How do you decide where to send the ball to score the maximum points
Describe where and how your body can be positioned to be successful at fielding the ball.
Adaptations:
To maximize the challenge and the fun, participants could identify their own ways to increase or
decrease the challenge.
To decrease the challenge, participants could:
o The ball has to be placed in a certain area instead of tagging
o Change to a larger ball to make kicking easier
To increase the challenge, participants could:
o Pass the ball to a certain number of players before tagging a runner
o Change the ball to a smaller object
Skill Development:
Movement Skill Set up Activity Cues
or Concept
Kicking Ball, Belly - Plant with your non-kicking foot beside the ball
teams Kickball pointing in the direction you want to kick
- Eye on the ball
- Make contact with the ball with the inside of foot
- Follow through
Catching Ball, Belly - Make a target with your hands
teams Kickball - Wide base of support
- Eye on the ball
- Absorb the ball
