CLAUDE MONET WATERLILIES LP 2

1) Be introduced to Impressionist artist, Claude Monet.

• Katie and the Waterlily Pond by James Mayhew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEDh0e5Aydo
• Regular paper
• Oil pastels
• Kleenex (for smudging)

Introduction:
Presentation (10-15 min)
Start by introducing artist Claude Monet. Who was he? What was his medium? What
kind of things did he paint and how? Explain impressionism using slideshow
presentation.
Today we will be making our own Waterlilies artwork to welcome spring and Easter.
Story (7 min)
Play Katie and the Waterlily Pond by James Mayhew on YouTube (link above).

Body:
Activity (1 hour)
Every student gets a piece of paper and pastels (blue, green and black are mandatory,
while other colours are recommended for detail and experimentation).
Students will be led through drawing a lily pad on water in an impressionistic way. They
will use smudging techniques with Kleenex to blend out colours and add details.
Once they have the lily pads drawn and filled in with surrounding water, they will come
to the back table where I will glue on a flower for them in the middle of their lily pad
and add their names on the bottom corners.

Closure:
Remind students of how much time they have left to finish. Once there is 10 minutes, tell them
that they need to start finishing up their work.

Sponge:
Easter-related worksheets.
