Part 1: Research Notes and Preparation (finish this by Thursday morning

10:00am)

Research Notes:

Topic: MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha) Following war survivors into the U.S.

Passage(s) the Inspires this Research:

“Later on, in the 1990’s, anti-immigration policies and programs in the U.S. led to
massive deportations of Central Americans. Among them were thousands of MS-
13 members-those perhaps quite understandably unwanted in the country.”(Page
46)

Response to Passage(s) and Connection to the Topic of Interest:

MS-13 members seem to be more prominent and violent, following the victims
who migrate from Mexico, Honduras.. Etc. It is, in my opinion, a good thing that
the minors who are associated with MS-13 and Barrio 18 are deported. The
children who are truly seeking asylum, that aren’t trying to be apart of these
gangs should be granted the help they need.

Research Focus Questions:

Do families/children associated with MS-13 and Barrio 18 deserve deportation?

Research Notes

Topic: Barrio 18 and the war between MS-13

Passage(s) the Inspires this Research:

“Manu tells me a confusing, fragmentented story about the MS-13 and their
ongoing fight against Barrio 18. One was trying to recruit him. The other was
going after him.” (Page 74)

“One of the questions that we dug into the most had to do with the gangs all the
children talked about during court screenings: the Mara Salvatrucha 13 (MS-13)
and the Barrio 18 (or Calle 18).” (page 45)

Response to Passage(s) and Connection to the Topic of Interest:

This passage and the stories that Manu tells give exposure to the Barrio 18 and
MS-13 fight. When I was growing up, I personally knew a lot about MS-13. I
haven’t heard of Barrio 18 until reading more into Manu’s story, and doing
research. The fight between the 2 gangs only furthers the point of granting these
war survivors asylum into the U.S.

Research Focus Questions:

Does the fight between Barrio 18 and MS-13 help the case of granting asylum to
children who migrate unaccompanied to the U.S.

Do these gangs have total control over North America?

Research Notes

Topic: Green Card and residents with a different status in the U.S.

Passage(s) the Inspires this Research:

“The green card application is nothing like the intake questionnaire for
undocumented minors. When you apply for a green card you have to answer
things like “Do you intend to practice polygamy?” and “Are you a member of the
Communist Party?” and “Have you ever knowingly committed a crime of moral
turpitude?’”(Page 10)

Response to Passage(s) and Connection to the Topic of Interest:

My Grandparents had to apply for green cards once they entered the U.S. Both
my grandparents were granted status after waiting for years. Now they both have
expired green cards. It has been expired for quite some time now. It is scary to
know that under the new Trump administration that deportation can occur to
those who are livingly harmlessly and hardworking in the U.S.

Research Focus Questions:

Do those who may have expired green cards deserve to be deported?

Directions Part 2: After researching the topics and focus questions you want to try to
answer to help you develop your essay, complete the following ANNOTATED
BIBLIOGRAPHY notes for your research.

a landscaper to provide for his family, and has been in the U.S for 30 years.

argument or book?
Jose Garcia came to the U.S when he was only 10. This story of him fighting for legal
status for 30 years only to be deported proves that there is a flaw in the U.S.
government. As well as the type of support that is provided to these minors.

Five people were arrested in March of 2017 for the killing of Kayla Cuevas, 16, and

This helps my analysis in my essay when I discuss the ideas of these violent gangs
following into schools and following minors. Not always are children associated with
gangs, like Nisa for example.

Title: Is rape the price to pay for migrant women chasing the American Dream?

Source of Text (where is this text originally published)

Fusion

Database or URL Where you Found Source:

https://splinternews.com/is-rape-the-price-to-pay-for-migrant-women-chasing-the-
1793842446

Scholarly or Popular Source? Is this a scholarly or popular text? How do you know?

The article seems to be a popular source. It looks as though it gains a lot of views.
Summary: Write a 1-2 paragraph summary of the text using YOUR own words. What is
this text about?

Women and girls who migrate to the United States are expected to be raped. At least
80% of women and girls are raped from the migration from North America to the U.S.
Almost all of these women know that this is going to occur, so they take contraceptives.
This proves that women and underaged girls are putting so much at risk in order to live
better lives. Lives that are free from violence or corruption. Although the U.S. isn’t all too
much better, it provides more for these people.

Analysis: Write a 1-2 paragraph analysis that answers the following questions:

● In what ways does this particular source help you better understand Luiselli’s
argument or book?
This allows me to gain more of an understanding as to why children who are under age
should receive asylum. A lot of the children who migrate are girls, and most of them are
raped. If being raped as a child isn’t enough to receive asylum, then there has to be
more change in the conduct of assisting these migrants.
