Composer Notes
This Communion song was inspired by the words of Pope Benedict XVI: “The Kingdom of God
comes by way of a listening heart. That is its path. And that is what we must pray for again and
again” (Jesus of Nazareth [New York: Doubleday Religion, 2007, pg. 146]). In his discourse on

SAMPLE
the Good Shepherd, Jesus says: “the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice” (John
10:3–4). Psalm 23 expresses this relationship from the point of view of the sheep: “The Lord is
my shepherd, I shall not want.” We shall not want because “you prepare me a banquet.”
The Liturgy of the Word ritualizes this lifelong endeavor to know and to follow the voice of the
Good Shepherd. And the fruition of the Liturgy of the Word is communing with the Lord at table.
In both we are drawn into an intimacy which Jesus himself describes: “I know mine and mine
know me” (John 10:14). The mission of the Church and of each individual believer is borne out of
this intimacy. The kingdom comes insofar as those who are called recognize and respond to the
one who is calling.
Uses: This song may be used throughout the year for Communion. At preparation of the gifts,
Communion, or post-Communion, it complements the readings of the following celebrations:
Lent/Holy Week — Lent 3 (A) [harden not your hearts]
Lent 4 (A) [cure of the man born blind]
Lent 5 (B) [a covenant written on our hearts]
Holy Thursday
Easter Season — Easter 4 (A, B, C) [the Good Shepherd]
Ordinary Time — Ord. Time 2–3 (A, B) [call of the disciples and Peter]
Ord. Time 5 (C) [call of the disciples and Peter]
Ord. Time 16 (C) [like sheep without a shepherd]
Ord. Time 18 (A) [feeding the five thousand]
Ord. Time 17–21 (B) [Jesus, the Bread of Life]
Ord. Time 24 (B) [following in Jesus’ steps]
Ord. Time 24 (C) [lost sheep; return of the prodigal son]
Ord. Time 28 (A) [God’s reign like a rich feast)
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King (A) [the shepherd separates the sheep from
the goats]
Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ [where I am, there will my servant be]
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
Ritual Masses — First Communion; Holy Orders; Funeral Liturgy; Reconciliation
